The warning that Perth motorists should fill up before petrol prices rose referred to a change due at 6am on Wednesday 30 September 2026. It is now historical, so those figures are not a guide to today’s bowser prices. For current prices, check FuelWatch before you drive.
What the September 2026 warning said
In an alert published on 29 September 2026, WA Consumer Protection said Perth’s average regular unleaded petrol (ULP) price was expected to rise by 12 cents per litre (cpl), to 238.5 cpl, from 6am the next day. These were the government’s forecast figures, not current prices. The alert said prices could reach 251.9 cpl at Caltex; 249.9 cpl at Ampol, EG Ampol, 7-Eleven and BP; and 239.9 cpl at Shell Reddy Express. It also reported that 24 sites would offer ULP below 222 cpl on 30 September. WA Consumer Protection’s alert advised motorists to buy only enough fuel to fill their vehicles, rather than stockpiling.

The alert listed these cheapest ULP prices by area. They are snapshots for the named dates, not live recommendations.

What happened to Perth prices on 30 September?
The ACCC’s weekly report, published on 2 October 2026, recorded Perth’s daily average retail petrol price at 226.3 cpl on 29 September and 238.7 cpl on 30 September—a 12.4 cpl increase. It also recorded 24 retail sites offering ULP below 222 cpl on 30 September. Those observed daily averages are not the same measure as Consumer Protection’s 238.5 cpl forecast, so the figures should be read with their sources and dates attached. The ACCC report also recorded a terminal gate price of 228.7 cpl that day. Terminal gate price is an indicative wholesale measure, not the retail price drivers pay; it excludes transport costs and actual transactions can vary.

Where can you find the cheapest petrol near you?
Use FuelWatch to compare the right fuel type, nearby suburbs and the day you plan to fill up. Its guidance says the service covers every fuel retailer in WA and lets motorists search by suburb or postcode, use location permission to find nearby prices, and compare stations on a map.
- Choose the fuel type. Compare ULP with ULP, or select the fuel your vehicle requires; Perth’s weekly cycle described below applies to unleaded petrol, not diesel or LPG.
- Search your area. Enter a suburb or postcode on FuelWatch, or use location access or the map to check stations near your route.
- Check the date and price. Retailers notify next-day prices by 2pm, and those prices are made public from 2:30pm. A notified price is locked for 24 hours from 6am the following day.
- Account for discounts and fees. FuelWatch lists standard cash prices. It does not include discounts such as supermarket offers or extra charges such as credit-card fees, so check whether either applies to your purchase.
- Weigh the trip against the saving. A cheaper bowser may not be worthwhile if reaching it adds enough distance or time to offset the per-litre difference.
The timing and price-cycle details can change. Check WA Consumer Protection’s FuelWatch and fuel prices guidance for the service’s current information.

When do Perth petrol prices go up?
FuelWatch describes a seven-day price cycle in metropolitan Perth and Mandurah for unleaded petrol. At the time covered by its guidance, prices rose sharply on Wednesday and then declined over the following six days; the final day was often the cheapest, with some prices at or below wholesale levels. That pattern is a guide, not a guarantee for every station or every week. Diesel and LPG do not follow this cycle, and regional WA prices are generally more stable and do not follow the same pattern.

The ACCC’s report found retail and indicative wholesale petrol prices broadly reflected refined-fuel benchmark movements over the period through 30 September 2026. The terminal gate price is a spot-market wholesale indicator that is typically indicative of average wholesale prices, but transactions can differ and the measure excludes transport. The weekly Perth price cycle is one local pattern, not the only cause of changes at the pump.
