The butcher identifies the winning product as its Bone in Leg Ham. The result is a category award—not a claim that judges ranked every Christmas ham in Australia.
Which butcher won the award?
McLoughlin Butchers, a family-owned business based in Malaga, Perth, received Champion Gold for its smoked Christmas ham at the AMIC awards in Sydney. PerthNow reported the result on 11 September 2024; the butcher’s Christmas orders page lists its AMIC Smallgoods Awards 24/25 Champion Gold entry as “Bone in Leg Ham.”
What does Champion Gold mean?
PerthNow reported that the best-scoring product in each category received Champion Gold, and that a gold award required a minimum score of 95 out of 100. The report said more than 800 products were submitted across 35 categories in 2024. Those figures are from PerthNow’s contemporaneous coverage; the available AMIC event page confirms the national awards and their product scope, but does not give those numbers in the passage available here.
AMIC describes the Charcuterie Excellence Awards as covering products including bacon, ham, salami, biltong, jerky, specialty smallgoods and charcuterie. The 2024 event was held in partnership with Australian Pork Limited. AMIC’s awards page provides the event context.

What did the butcher say about the win?
Owner Paul McLoughlin told PerthNow: “The award is really significant to us. The bone-in-the-ham category is highly competitive, and so we are extremely proud of the result. It’s a great achievement for our staff, who make quality products daily for our customers.”
How does this differ from the butcher’s other awards?
The AMIC Champion Gold is separate from McLoughlin Butchers’ results at other competitions. Its official seasonal page also lists awards from the Perth Royal Food Awards and IFFA. Separately, the 2024 Perth Royal Food Awards catalogue records bronze results for the business’s Traditional Smoked Leg Ham and Champagne Semi Boneless Ham. Those bronze results are not the AMIC Champion Gold award.
