Perth did not end all free night parking in the CBD. From 31 March 2025, the City of Perth introduced a $5 night rate from 6pm at its off-street car parks, while some on-street bays remained free at night. The exact hours, exclusions and current offers depend on the car park or bay, so check its current terms and signs before you park.
What changed in Perth CBD night parking?
On 25 February 2025, the City of Perth Council approved a $5 night fee at City car parks. The City announced on 28 March that the change would take effect on 31 March 2025. The original proposal, recorded in an 18 February agenda briefing, was to end the free off-street night-parking promotion and charge a flat rate from 6pm, subject to statutory public notice.
The fee applies to City off-street car parks, not every place to park in the CBD. The City said some on-street bays would remain free at night. Those bays are subject to their own time limits and restrictions, so follow the signs at the specific location. The City’s fee-change announcement sets out the original change; its current parking information says night rates, hours and exclusions vary by facility.
How much is night parking now?
The announced night rate was $5 from 6pm at City car parks. The City’s current information continues to describe a $5 night rate, but it does not make every car park’s hours and exclusions identical. Check the page for your chosen facility and its posted terms before relying on a particular rate or time window.

For a practical comparison, check the location, applicable hours, night rate, any free period, exclusions, operating hours and payment method. Do not assume that a promotion at one City car park applies to another or to an on-street bay.
Where can drivers still find free parking?
On-street bays
Some City on-street bays continued to offer free parking at night after the 2025 change. Whether a particular bay is free at the time you arrive depends on its signs and restrictions; a free period does not remove any posted time limit or other condition.

Selected weekend and public-holiday promotion
A separate promotion covered Cultural Centre, His Majesty’s and Pier Street car parks on weekends and public holidays. The City announced in 2025 that it offered three free hours. A later City of Perth Parking notice said this offer was reduced to two hours from 30 March 2026. It is a distinct, limited promotion—not a continuation of free night parking—and its terms should be checked before use. Why did the City introduce the fee?
The City said works at Perth Concert Hall and Queens Garden car parks would result in the loss of 900 parking bays. It also described the fee changes as support for operating costs, and said parking revenue goes back into community infrastructure, events, grants and parking technology. These are the City’s stated reasons, not an independent assessment of the policy’s financial or economic effects. In its 28 March 2025 announcement, the City said: “Parking fees are an important source of revenue for the City.”

Does the fee mean the City will raise $7 million?
PerthNow reported in 2025 that the proposal was expected to add $7 million to City coffers. That was a reported projection, not a confirmed amount of revenue collected. The available City updates do not establish that the projection was realized or independently verify its calculation. PerthNow’s report is the source for that estimate.

How to check the right terms before you park
- Identify whether you are choosing a City off-street car park or an on-street bay; the night fee and any free offer are not interchangeable.
- For a City car park, open the City of Perth Parking information and select the specific facility. Check its operating hours, night-rate window, exclusions and any current promotion.
- At an on-street bay, read the signs at the bay for the permitted hours, time limit and payment conditions. Do not rely on a general statement that some bays are free at night.
- Confirm the rate and payment method shown for your location before leaving the vehicle; current facility terms and signs take precedence over older announcements about the 2025 change.
