Clancy’s Fish Pub Canning Bridge announced in May 2024 that it would leave its Applecross site after 24 years, with 26 May set as its last official day. The venue later returned under a new name: PerthNow reported that Clancy’s By The Bridge was scheduled to open on 6 December 2024. That reported reopening means the May closure was not the end of the story.
Why did Clancy’s Fish Pub Canning Bridge close?
In a statement reported by PerthNow on 23 May 2024, the venue said the team had decided to leave “the little pub on the corner” after 24 years. Its stated rationale was that the Clancy’s brand wanted to focus on larger, family-friendly spaces suited to its service model, citing its Fremantle and City Beach venues as examples. That was the venue’s explanation, not an independently verified assessment of its business or finances.
The announcement came with little notice. PerthNow reported that 26 May 2024 would be the last official day and that regulars and staff were invited to a final drinks gathering on 25 May. The closure report did not attribute the venue’s statements to a named individual.
How long had the Applecross pub been there?
Clancy’s official Canning Bridge page describes the venue as a local in Applecross since 2000 and lists its address as 903 Canning Highway. That start year aligns with the “24 years” in the 2024 closure announcement. Clancy’s Canning Bridge venue page.
