Perplexity reportedly closed a $500 million funding round in early December 2024, at an approximately $9 billion valuation. That was a major private-market milestone for the AI search company, but it is no longer its latest widely reported valuation: later 2025 reports put the figure as high as $20 billion. Perplexity did not publicly confirm the December deal to the outlets that reported it.

What happened in the $500 million round?

Bloomberg reported on December 18, 2024, that Perplexity had completed the financing in early December. The company was valued at about $9 billion, including the new investment, and Institutional Venture Partners reportedly led the round. Bloomberg said Perplexity declined to comment. TechCrunch separately reported the completed round on December 19 and also said the company did not confirm it. Bloomberg’s report and TechCrunch’s follow-up therefore describe a reported financing, not a detailed company announcement.

Deal detail What was reported
Amount raised $500 million
Valuation Approximately $9 billion, including the new investment
Lead investor Institutional Venture Partners, according to Bloomberg
Completion Early December 2024, according to Bloomberg
Company confirmation Perplexity declined to comment to Bloomberg and TechCrunch

The $500 million is the reported capital invested; $9 billion is the financing’s implied company valuation. They are not interchangeable figures. Because the reported valuation included the new money, it is a post-money figure. It is not an audited market price: private-company financing terms can include share classes and investor protections that are not visible in a headline valuation. The available reporting does not establish enough detail to calculate dilution or compare the economic rights of different shares.

Why investors were interested in Perplexity

Perplexity is an AI-powered search and answer engine. It retrieves web information and generates conversational answers with citations, aiming to combine the immediacy of search with the synthesis of a chatbot. The December 2024 coverage also described work on real-time information, enterprise search across internal files, and finance-related features.

The investment case was broader than a single consumer search box. Generative AI made it possible to present search results as synthesized answers, while Perplexity sought to extend its offering into research, file analysis, enterprise use, and developer-facing services. Investors were also betting on consumer usage and paid subscriptions, and on the strategic value of becoming a destination where people ask questions and reveal what they need.

That is a venture thesis, not proof of durable economics. A useful answer can require web retrieval and multiple model operations, which can make serving it costly. The business must convert usage into subscription, advertising, enterprise, or API revenue while managing inference costs, user retention, and access to trusted web content. The funding itself does not establish profitability or show that Perplexity has displaced an incumbent.

How the valuation climbed

Bloomberg’s December report placed the $9 billion valuation in a rapid series of private-market milestones: approximately $1 billion in April 2024, about $3 billion in June after an investment from SoftBank’s Vision Fund 2, and about $9 billion in December. The December figure was roughly three times the June figure. These are reported valuation points, not necessarily directly comparable prices: financing terms, security classes, and pre- versus post-money treatment can differ between rounds.

Subsequent coverage moved the reported valuation higher. The figures below distinguish talks from reported completed financings; none should be mistaken for a public-market price.

Date Reported development Status and source
March 20, 2025 Talks to raise as much as $1 billion at an $18 billion valuation Reported as early-stage discussions by TechCrunch; talks are not a closed round
July 17, 2025 $100 million extension at an $18 billion valuation Reported by Bloomberg
September 10, 2025 $200 million financing at a $20 billion valuation Reported by TechCrunch, citing The Information

These later reports make the $9 billion figure a historical milestone rather than Perplexity’s latest widely reported valuation. The reports do not amount to a detailed public accounting of each transaction’s terms.

The AI-search race—and what Perplexity still has to prove

In December 2024, Perplexity was competing in a fast-moving field that included OpenAI’s ChatGPT Search, Google’s integration of generative AI into search, and Microsoft’s AI-search capabilities, as TechCrunch noted. The competition is not simply about which product can produce a fluent answer. A search service also has to find fresh information, cite it accurately, earn user trust, and remain useful enough that people return.

  • Answer quality and freshness: A citation does not guarantee that the response interprets its source correctly or supports every claim.
  • Serving costs: Web retrieval and model inference can make AI-grounded answers more expensive to provide than a conventional list of links.
  • Publishers and content access: Reliable search depends on web content. Perplexity has faced criticism and legal scrutiny over its use of publisher material; the existence of scrutiny should not be treated as a finding of liability.
  • Distribution: Google’s default presence, OpenAI’s consumer reach, and Microsoft’s software ecosystem create competition for user habits and access.
  • Revenue and retention: Consumer subscriptions, advertising, enterprise contracts, and API use have different economics. The financing reports do not establish which will produce lasting margins or whether users will keep paying.

For a personal-finance reader, the practical distinction is between a company’s funding valuation and the value of its product to an individual or business. A large financing can give a startup capital to expand, but it does not guarantee that a service will be accurate, cost-effective, or worth a subscription. Evaluate a search tool on its performance and price for your own needs, not on investor valuation alone.

What the $9 billion figure means now

The December 2024 round was a notable investor bet on AI-native search at a time when major technology companies were building competing products. It does not mean Perplexity raised $9 billion, nor that the company was officially valued at that amount by a public market. The reported financing was $500 million, and the approximately $9 billion post-money valuation was a private-market estimate attributed to reporting. Later reports put the valuation at $18 billion and then $20 billion in 2025, though the underlying terms were not fully public.
