For most active forex and CFD traders, Pepperstone is the better fit. It offers a straightforward choice between spread-only and raw-spread-plus-commission pricing, supports MT4, MT5, cTrader and TradingView, and is built around fast execution and platform flexibility.
IG is the stronger all-round choice for investors who want a broader financial-services platform. It generally offers a wider selection of markets, including shares, funds, options or futures in some jurisdictions, and its own web platform is more suitable for researching and trading multiple asset classes from one account.

What kind of broker is Pepperstone?
Pepperstone is best known for forex and CFD trading. Its account and platform range is aimed at traders who want to trade currencies, indices, commodities, cryptocurrencies, shares or other leveraged products, subject to local rules.
The usual choice is between:
- Standard pricing: the broker builds its charge into the spread, with no separate FX commission on the quoted trade.
- Razor or raw pricing: the spread is sourced close to the underlying market spread and a commission is charged on the trade.
The raw-spread account is not automatically cheaper. For a one-lot EUR/USD trade, the approximate cost is:

That does not make IG expensive in every situation. IG can be competitive on heavily traded markets, and a trader who uses spread betting may have a different cost and tax outcome from a trader using CFDs. The only reliable comparison is based on the instruments and trade sizes you actually use.
Compare a real trade, not a marketing minimum
- Choose three to five instruments you would genuinely trade, such as EUR/USD, GBP/USD, the S&P 500 and a major share.
- Check the live spread during the hours you trade.
- Record any per-side or round-trip commission.
- Check the minimum commission for small share or CFD trades.
- Check overnight financing for a position held for one week.
- Add currency-conversion charges if your account currency differs from the instrument’s settlement currency.
- Repeat the check during a volatile period, because spreads can widen around news and market openings.
For a short-term forex trader, Pepperstone often has the more transparent cost model. For a multi-asset investor, IG’s broader product menu may outweigh a modest difference in spread.
Platforms and tools
Pepperstone
Pepperstone commonly supports MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5, cTrader and TradingView, with availability depending on the client’s country and account setup. These platforms suit automated strategies, technical analysis, copy trading and traders who already know their preferred software.
One operational detail matters: a trading account is normally linked to a particular platform. If you open an MT5 account, you should not assume the same login can be used in cTrader or TradingView. Select the platform during account creation, and open a separate account if the broker requires it.
MetaTrader is useful for expert advisers and custom indicators, while cTrader is popular with traders who want a modern interface and detailed order-book features. TradingView is attractive for charting and social idea discovery, although the available order types and account connection may differ from using TradingView directly with another broker.
IG
IG’s proprietary web and mobile platforms are a major part of its appeal. They typically combine watchlists, charts, news, alerts, research and order tickets in one environment. IG also supports MetaTrader in some jurisdictions, but the full platform list must be checked for the entity opening your account.
IG’s own platform is usually better suited to a trader who wants to scan markets and manage different products without installing several specialist applications. Pepperstone is generally better for someone who chooses a platform first and then wants a broker compatible with it.

Market range: IG usually wins
IG generally has the broader market catalogue. Depending on jurisdiction and account type, it may provide access to thousands of shares, share CFDs, indices, forex pairs, commodities, interest-rate products and options. The headline number is less important than whether the specific exchange and instrument you need is available to retail clients in your country.

IG is usually the better fit if you want to combine CFDs with direct share dealing, a larger stock universe or a wider set of non-forex markets. Direct ownership and CFD exposure are not interchangeable: a CFD is a leveraged derivative and does not give you the same ownership rights as buying the underlying share.
Leverage, risk and investor protection
Leverage is controlled by the legal entity and your regulatory classification. Retail clients in highly regulated jurisdictions may face leverage limits, mandatory margin close-out rules and negative-balance protection. Professional clients can sometimes access higher leverage but may lose some retail protections.
Do not choose a broker merely because an offshore website displays higher leverage. The relevant question is: which company will be your counterparty? Before opening an account, read the footer and legal documents for:
- The company name and regulator
- Retail or professional classification
- Negative-balance protection
- Compensation-scheme eligibility
- Client-money segregation
- Dispute-resolution arrangements
- Permitted products and leverage limits
Both brokers’ ordinary stop-loss orders can be affected by slippage and market gaps. A stop order normally triggers a market execution; it does not guarantee that the position will close at the exact stop price. Guaranteed-stop products, where offered, usually carry an additional charge or a wider premium and may have eligibility restrictions.
Deposits, withdrawals and account administration
Both brokers generally support common electronic payment methods and bank transfers, but the available methods, processing times and fees depend on country. Use a payment method in your own name. A third-party card or bank account can delay compliance checks or cause a withdrawal to be rejected.

Before funding either account, check these points in the client portal:
- Whether the deposit method carries a broker fee.
- Whether the payment provider or receiving bank adds a charge.
- Whether withdrawals must be returned to the original funding source.
- How long identity or source-of-funds checks can take.
- Whether the broker charges inactivity, account-maintenance or currency-conversion fees.
Pepperstone is often attractive to traders who want a simple trading account and no routine inactivity charge, but fee policies can vary by entity. IG’s charges can differ between CFD, spread-betting, share-dealing and investment accounts. Do not apply the fee schedule for one IG product to another.
Customer service and research
