Paytm vs PhonePe vs Google Pay for Merchants: Fees, Settlement and Features

Merchant fees and settlement depend on channel, payment method, account tier and program. Compare the actual offer—not just a headline rate—before choosing.

There is no universal lowest-cost or fastest-settling choice: the answer depends on whether you take payments in-store or online, which payment methods you accept, your merchant category and the provider’s specific program. In India, compare the written offer for your own account—not just a headline rate—before choosing Paytm, PhonePe or Google Pay.

At a glance: what differs between the three

The comparison below reflects official provider information available on October 13, 2026. It is not a like-for-like price comparison: Paytm publishes rates that vary by payment instrument and merchant tier, PhonePe advertises a limited-time gateway offer, and Google’s terms distinguish programs and payment arrangements. A blank or unstated general rate should not be read as free.

Paytm QR, Soundbox and All-in-One POS are among the offerings described in its annual report. Paytm annual report Online payment gateway is also listed in the annual report. Its pricing page lists instrument- and merchant-tier-specific rates; UPI is listed at 0% for the applicable pricing described there. Other payment types have different fees and conditions. Paytm pricing Options described include T+n batch settlement, same-day virtual-account settlement, on-demand transfers and real-time settlement. Timing and conditions differ by option. Paytm settlements
PhonePe Store QR and SmartSpeaker for offline merchants. PhonePe offline merchant Gateway features include checkout, payment links, dynamic QR, AutoPay and international payments. PhonePe gateway pricing The Standard gateway plan is advertised as free for a limited time and subject to terms; enterprise pricing is custom. The page does not establish a permanent, universal free rate. Gateway materials mention settlement reports but do not state a universal settlement interval.
Google Pay for Business Merchant programs include offers and Soundpod audio notifications. The terms describe different payment flows by program. Google Pay for Business terms A universal online gateway feature set is not established by the cited terms. Google distinguishes Google Fees from transaction-processing or MDR charges for specified payment methods. The applicable arrangement depends on program and accepted instrument. G4B does not provide settlement services; SMB Program settlement follows a different process and timing. The program must be identified before comparing.

Use this as a shortlist, not a quote sheet. Provider pages and terms do not supply matching device prices, service charges, rates for every payment method, or a single settlement measure across all three.

One practical way to read the table is to compare a single transaction path at a time. For example, price an in-store UPI QR payment separately from a card payment taken on a POS device, and price both separately from a customer paying through an online gateway. Then compare the matching settlement arrangement and any device or service plan attached to that path. This avoids treating a gateway promotion, QR rate and speaker subscription as if they were one package.

How to compare fees without being misled by a headline rate

Start with channel and payment method

First separate in-store acceptance—such as a QR payment or card taken on a POS device—from online checkout or gateway transactions. Then list the methods customers will use, such as UPI, cards or other supported instruments. The charge for one instrument does not establish the charge for another, and an advertised gateway offer does not automatically apply to an offline QR or device transaction.

Paytm’s pricing page is the most explicitly segmented of the three sources in this comparison: it presents rates by payment instrument and merchant tier, and lists UPI at 0% within the pricing shown. That does not make every Paytm transaction free. For other payment types, the page shows differing fees, thresholds and category rates; check the row that actually applies to your instrument and business. Read Paytm’s current pricing terms.

For a useful comparison, write down the precise payment method and point of acceptance beside each quoted rate. A QR transaction and a card transaction may not use the same pricing row; an online gateway transaction is a separate channel again. Ask each provider to identify the instrument, merchant category and offer covered by the figure, rather than accepting a rate without its conditions. If the account supports several methods, request the applicable schedule for each one so that the comparison reflects your actual sales mix.

Check merchant classification and eligibility

Paytm defines a small merchant for the listed SME pricing as one with previous-financial-year turnover below ₹20 lakh, and a big merchant as one above ₹20 lakh. The page’s wording does not establish how a business at exactly ₹20 lakh is classified, so ask Paytm to confirm your tier rather than inferring it. The turnover figure is previous financial year turnover, not a monthly sales limit.

PhonePe’s Standard payment gateway page advertises a “Free” plan as a limited-time offer subject to terms, alongside custom enterprise pricing. Treat free as an offer with eligibility and duration to verify, not a standing promise for all merchants, channels or payment types. Before relying on it, obtain the offer’s end date, covered transactions, exclusions and post-offer rate in writing. Check PhonePe’s gateway pricing and terms.

Eligibility is as important as the displayed price. Confirm whether your business and the channel you intend to use qualify for the stated plan, whether the plan covers the payment methods you need, and whether custom pricing applies to your expected setup. For Paytm, do not assume that an old turnover figure, a current-year sales estimate or the label “small business” determines the published tier: the pricing page specifies previous-financial-year turnover. For PhonePe, keep the offer period in view and ask what rate or plan applies once it ends.

Ask for the full cost, not just MDR

For every option, request a written schedule that identifies transaction fees by payment method, any device or service charge, taxes or other applicable deductions, offer duration, eligibility, and what happens when the offer ends. A device may have a separate subscription or service plan even if the payment method itself has a stated rate. For Google’s audio-notification subscription, the terms say the subscription is annual and charged according to the payment plan selected in the app; the terms do not provide a single comparable price for every merchant. Review Google’s program terms.

Separate one-time hardware costs from recurring charges when you compare a speaker or POS option. The official information cited here does not provide directly comparable prices for Paytm Soundbox, PhonePe SmartSpeaker and Google Soundpod, nor matching warranty or cancellation terms. Ask whether the device is purchased, rented or otherwise supplied under a service plan, and request the full duration and exit conditions for that arrangement. Those details matter even where the transaction price is advertised as zero for a particular method.

Google’s terms also distinguish Google Fees from transaction-processing or MDR charges for specified payment methods. Do not collapse those categories into a single universal percentage. Ask which program applies, which payment method is being priced, and whether the quoted amount is a Google Fee, transaction-processing charge or another deduction. The public terms cited here do not establish one fee covering every Google merchant payment arrangement.

Settlement: when the money reaches you and who handles it

Paytm: choose among settlement flows

Paytm describes multiple settlement options rather than one fixed timetable: T+n batch settlement, same-day settlement to a virtual account, on-demand transfers and real-time settlement. These labels describe different flows; confirm the option enabled for your account, its cut-off or availability conditions, and any account-specific requirements before estimating cash flow.

Paytm says real-time settlement is available on business days, that the precise timing varies with banks, and that it levies no additional charge for transactions using real-time settlement. This is not a guarantee that every bank credits funds at the same instant, nor does it establish that every merchant or transaction is eligible. See Paytm’s settlement options.

When asking about a Paytm option, distinguish the settlement schedule from the transfer mechanism. T+n batch settlement, same-day virtual-account settlement and on-demand transfers are not interchangeable descriptions of one universal timing. Ask which option is active, what event starts the clock, whether a cut-off applies and how bank processing affects the final credit. For real-time settlement in particular, the stated availability is on business days and timing varies with banks, so do not plan on an identical instant credit at every hour or on every day.

PhonePe: reports are not a settlement promise

The cited PhonePe gateway material mentions settlement reports, but it does not state a universal settlement interval. A report can help reconcile transactions; it does not, by itself, tell you when funds will be credited. Ask for the settlement schedule and any conditions that apply to your merchant account and chosen gateway plan before treating PhonePe as faster or slower than another provider.

For reconciliation, ask what details the settlement reports contain and how the report period corresponds to the actual credit into your bank account. Keep the two questions separate: a report helps you check transaction records, while the agreed settlement terms determine the timing and flow of funds. The published gateway material cited here does not supply a universal interval that can be applied to every PhonePe merchant, so obtain the account-specific schedule before using it for cash-flow planning.

Google: distinguish G4B from the SMB Program

Google’s terms describe materially different arrangements. Under the G4B Program, Google says it does not provide settlement services or receive or pool funds payable to merchants; the buyer’s payment moves directly to the merchant. In the SMB Program, Google says it will initiate settlement within one business day after successful receipt of funds into the designated escrow account, subject to deductions and other terms. “Initiate settlement” is not the same as a promise that your bank will show cleared funds within one business day.

Therefore, ask which Google program applies to your account before comparing fees or settlement. Google’s merchant onboarding policy also says applicable merchant due diligence and a bank account are required for settlement services. Google Pay for Business terms and merchant onboarding policy.

The program distinction changes what “settlement” means in the comparison. For G4B, Google’s terms say the buyer’s consideration moves directly to the merchant and Google does not pool those funds. For the SMB Program, the stated one-business-day period begins only after successful receipt into the designated escrow account; it describes when Google initiates settlement, subject to deductions and conditions. When you ask about timing, make sure the provider’s answer identifies the starting event and the relevant program, rather than comparing a direct payment flow with a settlement initiation period.

Features by use case: shop counter, devices and online checkout

For an in-store counter

Paytm’s annual report describes QR acceptance, Soundbox voice confirmations and All-in-One POS. PhonePe promotes store QR and SmartSpeaker for offline merchants. Google’s terms describe merchant offers and Soundpod, a SIM-connected speaker with a QR code and audio notifications. These are different combinations of acceptance and notification tools; decide whether you need only a way to accept a payment, a voice confirmation, a POS device, or all of those.

PhonePe states that its SmartSpeaker page figures—5+ crore merchants and 72+ crore Indians—were accurate as of August 2026. Those are company-reported reach figures, not an independent measure of merchant preference, service quality or suitability for your shop. PhonePe SmartSpeaker.

For a busy counter, the practical distinction is between accepting a payment and confirming that one arrived. QR acceptance provides a way to take a payment; the providers separately describe voice-confirmation devices. A speaker may be useful if staff need audible confirmations while serving customers, but the available product descriptions do not establish that every device has identical connectivity, service terms or operating costs. Check the product and plan offered to your location and account before comparing them.

For online sales

PhonePe’s gateway page lists payment links, dynamic QR, AutoPay, checkout and international payments. Match each feature to your actual workflow: payment links can suit invoice-style requests, while checkout integration is relevant to a website or app. Confirm which features are included in the plan and which payment methods or transaction types are supported for your account; the promotional plan label alone does not answer those questions. PhonePe gateway features and pricing.

Paytm also reports an online gateway offering, but the cited annual report is not a complete current feature or fee schedule. Google’s cited merchant terms cover program terms and payment flows rather than establishing a directly comparable universal gateway feature list. Do not infer parity or absence of a feature from these source pages; request current product documentation for the channel you plan to use.

For an online comparison, first decide whether you need a checkout integration, a link to collect an individual payment, dynamic QR, recurring-payment functionality or international payments. PhonePe lists those gateway capabilities, including AutoPay and international payments, but you should confirm eligibility and support for your account rather than assume every feature is included in the limited-time Standard offer. For Paytm and Google, request channel-specific product documentation; the material cited here does not provide matching feature inventories for all three providers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For audio confirmation devices

A speaker is a physical product with its own potential service costs. Paytm describes Soundbox as providing real-time voice confirmations. PhonePe identifies SmartSpeaker 2.0 as a merchant speaker. Google defines Soundpod as a SIM-connected speaker with QR and audio notifications, and says audio-notification subscriptions are annual and charged on the payment plan selected in the app. The sources do not establish comparable device prices, recurring charges, warranties or cancellation terms for all three. Check the offer shown for your location and account before ordering; do not assume the hardware or subscription is free because a payment plan has a zero-rate headline.

Before choosing a device, confirm what the quoted plan actually covers: the hardware, audio notifications, the QR capability, and the period of service. The cited Google terms specify an annual subscription charged according to the payment plan selected in the app, but do not state one universal amount. For Paytm and PhonePe, the cited product descriptions identify the devices and their roles but do not establish a directly comparable recurring price. Get the plan, duration and cancellation conditions in writing for the specific offer you receive.

Which provider fits your merchant situation?

Choose by the operating need, then validate the offer

  • Mostly UPI at a small counter: compare the applicable UPI terms and QR setup, then decide whether paid or subscription-based voice confirmation is worth the operational benefit. Paytm’s listed UPI rate is 0% under its published pricing, but verify the applicable tier and terms.
  • Need a card-capable counter device: compare the POS capability and complete device/service costs, not just QR transaction pricing. Paytm reports an All-in-One POS offering; obtain its current merchant-specific terms.
  • Selling through a site, app or invoices: evaluate gateway integration, payment links, dynamic QR, recurring payment needs and supported methods. PhonePe’s published feature list is more detailed for these gateway tools, while its free Standard offer is temporary and terms-dependent.
  • Settlement timing drives working capital: compare the specific settlement flow your account can use. Paytm describes multiple options; PhonePe’s cited gateway material does not give a universal interval; Google’s G4B and SMB flows are different.
  • Considering Google for merchant payments or audio notices: establish the exact program and money flow first, then obtain the applicable fee and Soundpod subscription details for your account.

These are starting points, not provider rankings. A small shop that mainly accepts QR payments has a different comparison from a business taking cards at a counter or collecting online orders. A gateway feature list can matter to an online seller, while a settlement option or speaker plan may matter more to a physical store. The right fit depends on the actual account terms and the channel your customers use; the official information does not support a single winner across those use cases.

Before you sign up: a merchant comparison checklist

  1. Write down your channel. Mark each as in-store QR, POS/device, online gateway, payment link or recurring payment. Compare like with like.
  2. List payment methods. Ask for the fee applicable to each method you will accept. Do not use an advertised UPI or gateway rate as the price for other instruments.
  3. Confirm your merchant category and tier. For Paytm, check how the previous-year turnover threshold applies to your business, especially if it is exactly ₹20 lakh.
  4. Get the settlement flow in writing. Identify batch timing, same-day or real-time availability, cut-offs, bank dependencies, deductions and the point at which the provider considers settlement initiated or complete.
  5. Price the device and service separately. Ask for purchase or rental terms, recurring subscription, plan duration, taxes, warranty and cancellation conditions. Verify the merchant-specific offer; public sources do not give directly comparable totals.
  6. Check offer duration and exclusions. For PhonePe’s free Standard gateway offer, confirm end date, eligibility, covered instruments and the price after the offer period.
  7. For Google, name the program. Confirm whether your arrangement is G4B or SMB Program, how funds move, what fees apply, and whether onboarding due diligence or a bank account condition applies.
  8. Keep the documents. Save the pricing schedule, settlement terms and device plan shown during merchant onboarding. Recheck them if you add a payment method or switch plans.

It can help to make a one-page comparison with a row for every combination you expect to use: channel, payment method, transaction charge, settlement flow, device or subscription cost, and offer period. Record unanswered items as unanswered rather than filling them in from a headline. A provider’s written merchant schedule and the terms governing your account should resolve those gaps before you commit to a plan or use a quoted rate in your budget.

What the available evidence does—and does not—establish

The official materials support comparing specific published terms, not declaring a market-wide winner. Paytm’s settlement page describes a broader menu of settlement mechanisms; that alone does not prove it will credit a particular merchant faster than another provider. PhonePe’s marketing reach figures and feature list do not measure satisfaction or acceptance quality. Google’s program terms clarify distinct money flows but do not supply one fee or settlement answer for every merchant arrangement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Paytm UPI free for merchants?

Paytm’s pricing page lists UPI at 0% within the applicable published pricing, but this does not mean every Paytm transaction or payment method is free. Check the rate row and merchant tier that apply to your account, and confirm any separate device or service charges.

Is PhonePe’s Standard payment gateway permanently free?

No permanent universal free rate is established by the offer. PhonePe advertises the Standard gateway plan as free for a limited time and subject to terms. Confirm eligibility, the offer end date, covered transactions and the price after the promotion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which provider settles merchant payments fastest?

The published information does not support a universal fastest-provider ranking. Paytm describes T+n batch, same-day virtual-account, on-demand and real-time options; real-time settlement is available on business days and timing varies with banks. PhonePe’s cited gateway material does not give a universal interval. Google’s timing depends on whether G4B or the SMB Program applies.

Does Google Pay for Business handle settlement?

It depends on the program. Google says it does not provide settlement services under G4B and that buyer funds move directly to the merchant. Under the SMB Program, Google says it initiates settlement within one business day after successful receipt of funds into the designated escrow account, subject to terms and deductions. That initiation period is not a guarantee of bank credit within one day.

Are Paytm Soundbox, PhonePe SmartSpeaker and Google Soundpod free?

The cited materials do not provide comparable prices for all three devices or their service plans. Google’s terms say its audio-notification subscription is annual and charged according to the payment plan selected in the app. Check the device, recurring charges, duration, warranty and cancellation terms for your own offer.

What should a merchant compare before signing up?

Compare the same channel and payment method across providers. Get the applicable fee, merchant tier or eligibility, settlement flow and timing, device and service charges, offer duration, exclusions and post-promotion pricing in writing. For Google, identify the program; for Paytm, confirm how the previous-financial-year turnover tier applies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Paytm, PhonePe and Google Pay do not offer one directly comparable merchant package across every channel. Paytm publishes instrument- and tier-specific pricing and several settlement options; PhonePe promotes a time-limited gateway offer and a detailed set of online features; Google’s fees and money flow depend on the program. Compare your own written terms for each payment method, settlement path and device plan. The right choice is the one whose verified costs and operations fit your business—not the one with the broadest headline claim.
