Re:

How to Check UPI Transaction Status and Get a Failed Payment Reversed

A failed UPI payment is not automatically a permanent loss. Check the app status and RRN, identify whether it was a transfer or merchant payment, and follow the RBI T+1 or T+5 reversal process.

Open the UPI app you used, find the payment in transaction history, and record its status and transaction number or RRN. A debit does not always mean the payment is permanently lost. Under the Reserve Bank of India’s turnaround-time rules, a UPI transfer in which the beneficiary was not credited should auto-reverse by T+1, while a merchant payment where confirmation did not reach the merchant should auto-reverse by T+5. These are calendar-day deadlines. If the deadline passes, complain through the app or NPCI, contact your bank, and ask about ₹100-per-day delay compensation. Report any fraudulent or unauthorised debit to your bank immediately.

Check the transaction before assuming the money is gone

Start with the UPI application used for the payment. Open its transaction history, select the relevant entry, and refresh the status if the app provides a refresh option. The displayed state—such as successful, pending, or failed—determines what you should do next.

NPCI’s UPI FAQ says users can check UPI status and raise a grievance through a participating bank’s UPI app. NPCI also provides a transaction-status and complaint facility for payments routed through its systems.

  • The exact status shown in the app
  • The debit entry in your bank statement or SMS
  • Any complaint or service-request reference number

NPCI’s complaint form asks for the transaction date and transaction number/RRN. The bank or other member institution can use those details, or your complaint reference, to locate the payment.

What each UPI status means

Successful

A successful status normally means the payment completed in the UPI system. Check the recipient’s account or the merchant’s order record if they say they have not received it. Give them the transaction number/RRN so their bank or payment provider can trace the credit.

Pending

A pending entry means confirmation is incomplete; it is not proof that the beneficiary received nothing. NPCI says a pending debit where the beneficiary has not been credited can reflect a delay at the beneficiary bank. Its FAQ states that the amount will reach the beneficiary within 48 hours once that bank completes its daily settlements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not make a second payment solely because the first one is pending. First check whether the recipient or merchant has received the funds, and monitor the original transaction. If the status does not change, use the complaint process and the applicable RBI deadline explained below.

Failed

A failed status means the payment was not completed. If no money was debited, there is usually nothing to reverse; you can retry after checking your balance, UPI limit, beneficiary details, and bank or network availability. If your account was debited, treat it as a failed debit and follow the reversal steps rather than paying again immediately.

Debited but the recipient or merchant has no credit

This is the situation covered by RBI’s failed-transaction framework. The correct reversal deadline depends on whether the payment was a transfer to a beneficiary or a merchant transaction. Do not apply a generic “refund within 24 hours” promise to both cases.

Find the correct RBI reversal deadline

In the RBI framework, T is the calendar date of the transaction. Therefore, T+1 and T+5 count calendar days, not only working or banking days. The framework covers failed transactions that were not fully completed for reasons not attributable to the customer, including cases where the beneficiary credit was not effected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
What happened Required reversal deadline Compensation for delay
Your account was debited, but a beneficiary account was not credited in a UPI transfer The beneficiary bank must auto-reverse by T+1 ₹100 for each day after T+1
Your account was debited, but a merchant did not receive transaction confirmation Auto-reversal within T+5 ₹100 for each day after T+5

For example, if a person-to-person transfer occurred on 10 October, T+1 is 11 October. If a merchant payment occurred on 10 October, T+5 is 15 October. The dates are counted from the transaction calendar date, regardless of weekends or holidays.

RBI’s framework says the prescribed compensation is to be credited without waiting for the customer to submit a separate claim. If it is not credited, ask the bank to calculate the delay from the applicable deadline and provide the compensation due.

How to classify the payment

Use the purpose of the payment, not merely the name shown in the app. A transfer to another person or bank beneficiary is the beneficiary-credit case. A payment for an order, bill, ticket, subscription, or other merchant purchase is the merchant-confirmation case. If you are unsure, tell the bank exactly what you paid for and whether the recipient was an individual or a business; the member institution can map the transaction to the correct category.

The two clocks should not be combined. A merchant payment is not automatically due back in one day, and a person-to-person transfer should not be given the longer merchant period simply because the app still says pending.

What to do after a failed debit

  1. Confirm the debit. Match the UPI entry with your bank statement, SMS, or account ledger. A failed screen without an actual debit is different from a failed payment for which funds were removed.
  2. Identify the payment type. Decide whether it was a transfer to an individual or bank beneficiary, or a merchant payment for which the merchant needed confirmation.
  3. Keep the transaction record. Note the date, amount, RRN, recipient or merchant, and the exact app message.
  4. Raise a complaint in the UPI app. Use the transaction’s help, dispute, or grievance option and select the failed, debited, or beneficiary-not-credited reason that best matches the facts.
  5. Contact your bank. Provide the RRN and complaint reference and state whether the case is a transfer subject to T+1 or a merchant payment subject to T+5.
  6. Watch the deadline. Continue checking the account until the reversal appears. Keep copies of the complaint and all responses.

NPCI routes a complaint to the relevant member institution. That bank or institution—not NPCI itself—is responsible for investigating and resolving the transaction.

How to handle a pending transaction

A pending transaction needs monitoring rather than an automatic assumption of loss. The beneficiary bank may still be processing the credit, and the recipient could receive the money even while your app shows an old status.

  • Ask the recipient or merchant to check their account or order record, not just an SMS notification.
  • Do not disclose your UPI PIN, one-time password, card details, or full banking credentials to anyone claiming to “release” a pending payment.
  • Keep the original RRN and avoid creating a duplicate payment until you know whether the first one completed.
  • If the transaction remains unresolved, file a complaint and ask the bank to apply the relevant RBI turnaround time.

NPCI’s FAQ separately says that a failed debit should be refunded and advises contacting bank customer support if the refund has not arrived within one hour. That FAQ guidance is not a replacement for RBI’s transaction-type-specific T+1 and T+5 deadlines. Use the RBI deadline that matches the payment, especially when the one-hour period has passed.

Pending does not mean you should authorise another payment

Before retrying, ask the beneficiary or merchant to search by the RRN and check the account ledger. A second payment can create two completed debits if the first transaction eventually settles. If a second payment is unavoidable, keep both RRNs and make a note of which one was intended to complete the purchase.

If the app changes from pending to successful, preserve the updated receipt. If it changes to failed after a debit, treat that as a failed-debit case and start the applicable reversal clock from the original transaction date, not from the date you noticed the failure.

Use the app or NPCI complaint channel

Complaint through the UPI app

Open the transaction, choose the help or dispute option, select the closest issue category, and submit the RRN, date, amount, and description. Save the acknowledgement number. The exact menu name varies by app and bank, but the transaction-detail screen is the usual starting point.

Complaint through NPCI

NPCI’s “Register a Complaint” facility supports status checks and complaints for transactions routed through NPCI payment systems. Enter the transaction date, transaction number/RRN, amount, bank or member details, and the problem description requested by the form. NPCI makes the complaint available to the relevant member institution for resolution.

After registration or closure, use the transaction details or complaint reference number to check the final status with the bank or institution. Keep the reference even if the money is later reversed; it establishes when you sought help.

What to write in the description

Use a short factual description: state the transaction date, amount, RRN, whether the payment was to a person or merchant, the status shown, and the date you noticed the debit. Say clearly that the account was debited and the beneficiary was not credited, or that the merchant did not receive confirmation. Avoid sending your UPI PIN or other secret credentials in a complaint.

When the deadline has passed

If a qualifying transfer has not reversed by T+1, or a qualifying merchant payment has not reversed by T+5, contact the bank again with the RRN and the earlier complaint reference. Ask for:

  • The current transaction and reversal status
  • The reason the automatic reversal did not occur on time
  • The date on which the bank will complete the reversal
  • ₹100 per day for each day beyond the applicable RBI deadline

RBI’s framework provides for the compensation without waiting for a separate claim. If the bank or payment institution does not provide redress within the applicable turnaround time, RBI points customers to the Reserve Bank Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2021, as amended. Use the bank’s final response, complaint reference, transaction record, and account statement when escalating.

How to count delayed days

Count delay from the day after the applicable deadline. For a transfer with T on 10 October, the required reversal date is 11 October; a reversal completed later can attract ₹100 for each day beyond that date. For a merchant payment on 10 October, the required date is 15 October, so the compensation clock begins after 15 October. Ask the bank to show the dates it used rather than accepting a general statement that the case is “in process.”

Fraudulent or unauthorised debits require a different response

If you do not recognise the transaction, believe someone used your account without permission, or suspect fraud, contact your bank immediately through its official website, app, branch, or verified customer-care number. Tell the bank that the debit is fraudulent or unauthorised and ask it to secure the account and register the complaint.

NPCI specifically directs users to their bank for fraudulent, unidentified, or unauthorised transaction complaints. Do not classify a suspected fraud as an ordinary delayed-reversal case, and do not wait for the T+1 or T+5 period before reporting it.

UPI HELP: what the 2025 pilot does—and does not—promise

An NPCI circular dated 8 October 2025 describes UPI HELP as a pilot. Through participating member channels, it includes status checking and complaint logging or tracking for incomplete transactions and certain merchant-service issues.

Because the service is described as a pilot, availability is not established for every UPI user. If your app or bank offers UPI HELP, you can use it as an additional status and complaint channel; otherwise, use the ordinary app, NPCI, and bank processes. A pilot feature does not change the RBI reversal deadlines.

Common problems and practical fixes

The app says failed, but the bank statement shows no debit

Wait for the failed entry to settle, then verify that no debit appears in the bank ledger. If the balance is unchanged, there is no money to reverse. Retry only after checking the recipient details and any bank or UPI limit message.

The app says failed and the account was debited

Save the RRN, file the in-app complaint, and contact the bank. Apply T+1 for a beneficiary transfer or T+5 for a merchant payment. Do not rely on an unspecific promise that every failed payment will return within 24 hours.

The recipient says the money did not arrive, but my app says successful

Give the recipient the RRN and ask them to check the account statement with their bank. Raise a trace or dispute through your UPI app if the credit cannot be located. A “successful” display and a recipient’s missing credit need to be reconciled by the member banks using the transaction reference.

The merchant says there is no order confirmation

Ask the merchant to check its payment-acquirer or order system using the transaction reference. If confirmation was not received and your account was debited, this is the merchant case covered by the T+5 reversal rule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The bank closes the complaint without a refund

Request the closure reason in writing, reopen or escalate through the bank’s grievance channel, and retain the original reference. If the applicable RBI turnaround time has expired without redress, use the Reserve Bank Integrated Ombudsman Scheme route identified by RBI.

The app and bank show different statuses

Do not treat either screen as conclusive when the records conflict. Save screenshots of both, give the bank the RRN, and ask it to confirm whether the beneficiary or merchant was credited. The member institution can trace the transaction across the participating banks; the complaint reference lets you follow that investigation.

The transaction is missing from history

Check the account ledger and bank SMS for the date and amount, then contact the bank through an official channel with those details. A missing app entry does not remove the bank’s ability to search by the debit record, transaction number, or complaint reference.

UPI reversal checklist

  • Open the payment in the app’s transaction history.
  • Refresh and record the exact status.
  • Confirm whether your bank account was actually debited.
  • Save the date, amount, RRN, recipient or merchant, and statement entry.
  • Classify it as a beneficiary transfer or merchant payment.
  • Use T+1 for a debited transfer with no beneficiary credit.
  • Use T+5 for a debited merchant payment with no merchant confirmation.
  • Ask about ₹100 per day for delay beyond the applicable deadline.
  • Keep app and NPCI complaint references.
  • Report fraud or an unauthorised debit to the bank immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions

My UPI transaction failed but my bank account was debited. What should I do?

Open the transaction, record the status and RRN, confirm the debit in your bank ledger, and raise a complaint in the UPI app or NPCI channel. Tell the bank whether it was a beneficiary transfer or a merchant payment. The applicable reversal deadline is T+1 for a transfer with no beneficiary credit and T+5 for a merchant payment with no merchant confirmation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does T+1 mean for a UPI reversal?

T is the calendar date of the transaction. T+1 is the next calendar day, not the next banking day. For a debited UPI transfer where the beneficiary was not credited, the beneficiary bank should auto-reverse by that deadline. If the reversal is late, RBI’s framework provides ₹100 for each day of delay.

What does T+5 mean for a failed merchant payment?

For a merchant payment where your account was debited but the merchant did not receive transaction confirmation, the required auto-reversal period is T+5. T is the transaction calendar date, so weekends and holidays are included. Delay beyond that deadline attracts the prescribed ₹100-per-day compensation.

My payment is pending and the amount was debited. Should I pay again?

Do not pay again solely because the status is pending. Ask the recipient or merchant to check the account or order record using the RRN, refresh the original transaction, and monitor it. NPCI says a pending debit can reflect a delay at the beneficiary bank and that the amount may reach the beneficiary within 48 hours after daily settlement. If unresolved, complain and use the applicable RBI deadline.

Where can I find the UPI RRN?

Open the payment in your UPI app’s transaction history and select the transaction details or receipt. The transaction number or RRN is the key identifier requested by NPCI’s complaint form and used by the bank or member institution to trace the payment. Save it with the date, amount, recipient or merchant, and complaint reference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the one-hour refund advice the same as the RBI deadline?

No. NPCI’s FAQ advises contacting bank support if a failed debit has not been refunded within one hour, but RBI’s formal turnaround depends on the transaction type. Use T+1 for a debited transfer with no beneficiary credit and T+5 for a debited merchant payment with no merchant confirmation.

How do I complain through NPCI?

Use NPCI’s Register a Complaint facility for transactions routed through NPCI payment systems. Provide the transaction date, RRN, amount, member or bank details, and a description of the problem. NPCI routes the complaint to the relevant member institution, which is responsible for resolution. Keep the complaint reference and check the final status with the bank.

What if I do not recognise the UPI debit?

Treat it as potentially fraudulent or unauthorised, not as an ordinary delayed reversal. Contact your bank immediately through an official channel, ask it to secure the account and register the complaint, and provide the transaction details. NPCI directs users to their bank for fraudulent, unidentified, or unauthorised transaction complaints.

What compensation is due when the reversal is late?

RBI’s framework specifies ₹100 for each day beyond the applicable T+1 or T+5 deadline. The compensation is to be credited without waiting for a separate customer claim. If it is missing, ask the bank to calculate the delayed days and credit the amount, then escalate through the Reserve Bank Integrated Ombudsman Scheme if redress is not provided.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Check the UPI status and RRN first, then match the payment to the correct RBI deadline: T+1 for a debited transfer where the beneficiary was not credited, or T+5 for a debited merchant payment where confirmation was not received. Complain through the app, NPCI, and your bank, claim the prescribed ₹100-per-day delay compensation when applicable, and report suspected fraud to the bank without waiting.
