What happened to PayPal and Venmo?
Both PayPal and Venmo experienced problems during the same period on October 16, 2025. Users reported being unable to log in, being signed out of Venmo, seeing dashboards or feeds fail to load, and encountering errors when trying to send or request money.
Some users saw a generic message stating: “We’re sorry. We’re having some trouble completing your request right now. Please try again shortly, and if it persists, let us know.” Other reports described spinning screens, empty or outdated feeds, delayed activity, and difficulty checking balances.

- Double check if the URL/website is genuine before entering card details online. Do not provide any gift card details (example: claim code) to someone you do not know or trust. There are a variety of scams in which fraudsters try to trick others into paying with gift cards.
- If you believe that your Card has been lost or stolen, notify Mastercard immediately by calling 1-833-791-7288. You will be asked to provide the Gift Card number and other identifying information.
- Use your Mastercard Gift Card in the U.S. everywhere Mastercard debit cards are accepted, including online. Your Amazon.com Balance cannot be used to purchase Mastercard gift cards.
Because PayPal owns Venmo, a shared service dependency is possible. However, the available reporting did not establish which system failed. There is no confirmed evidence in the cited coverage that the incident was caused by a cyberattack, data breach, overloaded server, bank-network failure, or a particular cloud provider.
When did the outage happen?
- Around 11 a.m. ET: Reports of problems with both services began rising.
- Around noon: Users were still reporting login, account, and payment-related failures.
- Around 12:30 p.m. ET: User reports began to decline.
- About 1 p.m. ET: PayPal and Venmo appeared to be recovering or largely restored.
- Later that day: PayPal characterized the event as a brief technical issue or service disruption and said it had been resolved.
The timing reflects user reports and contemporaneous coverage, not a confirmed technical start and end time for every PayPal or Venmo system.
BGR’s coverage cited more than 8,400 PayPal reports and more than 7,800 Venmo reports at one point. TechRadar’s live report later cited a PayPal peak approaching 10,000 reports and more than 8,000 Venmo reports.

Was the problem regional or widespread?
The sharp increase in reports for both platforms indicated a broad service disruption rather than an isolated problem with one user’s phone, internet connection, or account. The available reports do not establish that every user or every region was affected equally.
A status dashboard may also lag behind real-world reports. During this incident, contemporaneous coverage described widespread user problems while PayPal’s status page initially showed production systems as operational. The page was later updated to reflect disruption affecting areas including the homepage, account functions, and Venmo.

What did PayPal say?
PayPal’s public explanation was limited. The company described the event as a brief technical issue or service disruption and said it had been resolved. The cited reporting did not include a detailed root-cause explanation.
That means the following points are supported:
- Both PayPal and Venmo experienced temporary problems.
- The disruption affected access and some account or payment-related functions.
- Service recovered the same day.
- The precise technical cause was not publicly disclosed in the cited coverage.
It would be inaccurate to state as fact that a specific database, authentication service, payment rail, vendor, software release, or security incident caused the outage.
What should you do if PayPal or Venmo is not working?
- Check the official status page. Visit paypal-status.com before assuming the problem is limited to your account.
- Try both the app and website. A failure in one interface does not necessarily mean every service is unavailable.
- Check your connection. Switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data. Venmo also recommends disabling a VPN if applicable, signing out and back in, updating the app and device software, and reinstalling the app when the problem appears isolated to one device. Its troubleshooting guidance is available at Venmo’s error-message help page.
- Do not repeatedly submit the same payment. A generic error does not prove that a payment was never created.
- Record the details. Save screenshots, error messages, timestamps, and transaction references.
- Verify before retrying. Check PayPal or Venmo activity, your bank account, and your card statement before attempting the payment again.
What if a payment failed?
First check the transaction history and the funding account. A payment may have succeeded even if the app displayed an error, or it may have been declined without creating a completed transaction.
Not every failed payment is caused by an outage. Venmo says payments can also fail because a bank or card issuer declined the transaction, an automated security system flagged it, the account reached a limit, funds were insufficient, or the account or bank payment was restricted. See Venmo’s payment-declined guidance for those possibilities.

Venmo says bank-funded payments can take three to five business days to complete. A payment sent to an unverified or unassociated phone number or email address can remain pending until the recipient claims it. Some unclaimed payments may expire after 30 days, with the money returned to the original funding method. Details are available in Venmo’s pending-payment guidance.
An outage-related pending payment may not follow the same pattern as an ordinary pending payment. Confirm its status in the transaction history and contact support if it remains unresolved.
What if you see a duplicate charge?
Compare the PayPal or Venmo transaction history with your bank account, card statement, and payment notifications. A generic error may be followed by one completed payment, while a bank or card statement may temporarily show multiple authorization or posting entries.

Do not assume that every duplicate-looking entry is a second completed payment, and do not submit another payment until you know what happened. If two completed transactions remain, contact the relevant service with the transaction IDs and supporting screenshots. Do not rely on an automatic reversal deadline unless PayPal, Venmo, your bank, or card issuer confirms one for that transaction.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What if you paid the wrong person?
Do not send another payment to “correct” the first one. Venmo generally says completed person-to-person payments cannot simply be canceled. Its guidance distinguishes among pending payments, wrong-recipient payments, duplicate payments, scams, and payments sent to strangers.
Contact Venmo support through its payment-cancellation guidance. Do not assume that asking your bank to reverse every payment is safe. Venmo says bank cancellation is relevant only in certain situations involving payments that are still pending with an estimated completion date; attempting to stop a completed payment through the bank can create an amount you may owe Venmo.

Venmo lists these support options:
- In the app: Me → Settings → Get Help → Chat With Us
- General support phone: 855-812-4430
- Listed phone hours: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Central Time daily
- Venmo card: Call the number on the back of the card
Support details can change, so confirm current options through Venmo’s contact page or its support request form.
Does a failed login mean your account was hacked?
Not by itself. Login failures, delayed feeds, and missing activity were among the reported symptoms of the October 16 disruption. They are not proof of an account compromise.
Change your password and contact support if you see unauthorized transactions, suspicious account changes, or deceptive emails. But there is no basis in the cited outage coverage for describing the incident as a security breach.
Is PayPal or Venmo down right now?
The October 16, 2025 outage was resolved the same day according to contemporaneous reporting and PayPal’s statement. That historical resolution does not prove current availability. For a present-day check, use PayPal’s live status page and compare the result with the specific feature that is failing.
If the status page is green but only your account is affected, check your connection, app version, account notifications, transaction history, and any bank or card decline messages before treating the problem as a provider-wide outage.
