NVIDIA announced the GeForce GTX 1080, its first gaming GPU based on Pascal, on May 6, 2016. Its fifth anniversary fell on May 6, 2021—when NVIDIA was warning investors that gaming GPU supply would remain constrained. But the company’s later filings described a market moving toward weaker gaming demand and excess inventory, not an uninterrupted shortage. Those dated disclosures do not show whether GPUs are scarce or expensive today.
When did NVIDIA Pascal come out?
NVIDIA introduced Pascal to gaming with its May 6, 2016 announcement of the GeForce GTX 1080. That date was the announcement, not the card’s stated availability date: NVIDIA said the GTX 1080 Founders Edition would be available May 27, while partner custom boards were expected to start at a lower price. The GTX 1070 followed on a separate announced schedule in June.

NVIDIA presented Pascal as a performance and efficiency advance over Maxwell. In the announcement, the company described the GTX 1080 as using a 16nm FinFET process, 7.2 billion transistors, 8GB of GDDR5X memory, a 256-bit memory interface, and a 10Gb/sec memory rate. It claimed 1.7 times the effective memory bandwidth of regular GDDR5, up to twice the virtual-reality performance of the GeForce GTX TITAN X, and three times the power efficiency versus Maxwell. These are NVIDIA’s launch-era claims, not independent benchmark results.
What did the GTX 1080 and GTX 1070 cost at launch?
NVIDIA’s 2016 announcement listed U.S. dollar prices for its Founders Edition cards and separate expected starting prices for partner custom boards. The figures are historical announced prices; they do not establish the prices buyers actually paid across retailers or regions.

- Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
- 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
- Dual BIOS switch lets you toggle between Quiet and Performance BIOS profiles
- Dual ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as sleeve bearing designs
| Card | Announced availability | Founders Edition price | Expected partner-board starting price |
|---|---|---|---|
| GeForce GTX 1080 | May 27, 2016 | $699 | $599 |
| GeForce GTX 1070 | June 10, 2016 | $449 | $379 |
The announcement supports a comparison of launch timing and announced prices, but not a performance ranking between the cards. Nor do those launch figures tell a buyer what a used Pascal card is worth now: condition, local supply, and the current alternatives would need to be checked separately.
Why were graphics cards so hard to find around Pascal’s fifth birthday?
In its filing for the quarter ended May 2, 2021, NVIDIA said it expected to remain supply-constrained into the second half of fiscal 2022, primarily in gaming. The company also described increased demand for gaming, data-center, and notebook workstation products amid pandemic-related work-from-home trends. It believed gaming had benefited from cryptocurrency-mining demand, while cautioning that the extent was hard to determine.

That account points to overlapping pressures rather than one proven cause. NVIDIA’s statement documents the company’s supply outlook and its view of demand; it is not a measurement of how many cards were unavailable to consumers, how long buyers waited, or what they paid on resale markets.

Did the shortage continue?
NVIDIA’s later disclosures show a change in market conditions. In its filing for the quarter ended July 31, 2022, the company reported reduced gaming sell-in and said channel partners were reducing inventory and shifting toward a lower-value mix. It also described pricing programs and charges related to excess inventory and purchase obligations. NVIDIA said it was difficult to quantify how much lower cryptocurrency-mining demand contributed to the decline in gaming demand.

In an October 2022 filing, NVIDIA described dependencies on third-party components and partners for manufacturing, assembly, testing, and packaging, and noted risks from pandemic disruptions, geopolitics, and logistics. It said it did not operate its own wafer fabrication facility. These disclosures help explain why supply can be exposed to external disruptions, but they do not establish that every supply problem persisted continuously or that cards remained scarce at a particular store.
| Period | What NVIDIA disclosed | What the disclosure does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| May 2021 | Expected supply constraints into the second half of fiscal 2022, primarily in gaming; demand included pandemic-related effects, and crypto mining may have contributed. | Consumer-level stock, wait times, or resale prices. |
| Quarter ended July 31, 2022 | Reduced gaming sell-in, channel inventory cuts, a lower-value mix, pricing programs, and excess-inventory-related charges. | A precise share of the demand decline caused by reduced crypto mining. |
| October 2022 filing | Third-party manufacturing and component dependencies, alongside pandemic, geopolitical, and logistics risks. | GPU stock or pricing after that filing, including current conditions. |
What does the fifth birthday tell a GPU buyer?
The anniversary is a useful marker for two different stories: Pascal’s 2016 launch and the supply constraints NVIDIA disclosed five years later. The subsequent inventory adjustment matters too, because supply and demand can change direction; a shortage narrative should not be treated as proof of a permanent shortage.

- Do not treat launch prices as current value. The GTX 1080 and GTX 1070 figures above are announced 2016 U.S. prices, not a present-day price guide.
- Check the specific market and card. The dated company filings do not establish present stock, local prices, condition, or whether a particular listing is a sound purchase.
- Keep the crypto explanation qualified. NVIDIA itself said the mining contribution was difficult to determine in both its 2021 and 2022 accounts.
As of October 4, 2026, the cited company records establish historical launch details and market disclosures through 2022, not whether GPUs are difficult to obtain now. A current judgment would require current, region-specific stock and price information.
