The International Olympic Committee did not pay Paris 2024 medalists a direct cash prize. Some athletes could still receive money or other benefits from their government, national Olympic committee, sport federation, sponsors or private donors—and the amounts and conditions varied widely.
Who paid athletes for Paris 2024 medals?
There was no single Olympic-wide prize package. The provider matters: a government bonus, a sport federation award and a sponsor’s gift are different arrangements, even when they follow the same medal. The IOC said it redistributes 90% of its income, particularly to National Olympic Committees and International Federations, and that those organizations decide how to support athletes and sport development. That funding statement is not a direct medal bonus. Associated Press reported the IOC’s explanation in 2024.
Paris 2024 rewards with stated amounts
| Provider and scope | Gold | Silver | Bronze | Important conditions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| French government; French Olympic and Paralympic medalists | €80,000 | €40,000 | €20,000 | Each member of a medal-winning team was eligible for the corresponding amount; bonuses accumulated for multiple medals. The announced scope also included guides of Paralympic athletes. Government of France, 2024 |
| World Athletics; athletics at Paris 2024 | US$50,000 per gold medal | Not offered for Paris 2024 | Not offered for Paris 2024 | Relay teams split the gold award among members. World Athletics said silver and bronze awards would begin at Los Angeles 2028. Associated Press, April 10, 2024 |
World Athletics president Sebastian Coe said the award was intended “to recognize that the revenue share that we receive is in large part because our athletes are the stars of the show,” according to the Associated Press report. This federation award applied to athletics, not every Olympic sport.
Other country-specific examples—and why the details matter
Cash is only one kind of reward, and reported packages cannot be treated as universal entitlements. These examples differ in provider, timing, eligibility and whether an item was an announced benefit, a promise or a reported award.

- Poland: A report described a package for an individual gold medalist that included 250,000 zlotys, a two-room apartment, a diamond, a painting and a holiday voucher. It is a reported package tied to its event and circumstances, not a standing Olympic-wide benefit. Scroll’s country-by-country report.
- Hong Kong: The Hong Kong Jockey Club—not the IOC—offered an individual gold award of HK$6 million. Separate travel and service rewards were attributed to other organizations. TIME’s report.
- South Korea: A 2024 report described Olympic medalists of any color as eligible for exemption from 18 months of compulsory military service. Eligibility and applicable law should be checked before treating that report as a current general rule. Scroll’s report.
- Indonesia, after Tokyo 2020: Following the women’s doubles badminton gold, a district head promised Apriyani Rahayu five cows and land, alongside other reported gifts. The report attributes these as promises and other announced rewards; it does not establish that every gift was delivered. Scroll’s report.
How to compare a medal reward accurately
A headline figure can obscure who is paying and what the athlete is actually entitled to receive. Check the terms before comparing one country’s offer with another:
- Provider: Is it a government, Olympic committee, federation, sponsor or private donor?
- Eligibility: Does it cover only gold, all medal colors, a particular sport, an individual or team members?
- Form: Is the benefit cash, property, services, travel or another gift?
- Status: Was it formally announced, promised, or reported as delivered?
- Timing: Which Games cycle and announcement date does it apply to?
Those distinctions are especially important when comparing Paris 2024 arrangements with rewards associated with earlier Games: an announced or promised benefit is not proof of payment or delivery.
