Panera Bread breach impacts about 5.1 million unique email addresses—not 14 million customers

ShinyHunters claimed 14 million Panera records, but analysis found about 5.1 million unique email addresses. Here is what the numbers mean, what data was reported exposed and how customers should respond.

Short answer: ShinyHunters claimed to have stolen more than 14 million Panera records in January 2026. Analysis of the material later released found approximately 5.1 million unique email addresses associated with account data. That is not the same as 14 million customers—and it is not a final, legally verified count of individuals.

The two breach numbers measure different things

The clearest account of the incident, based on public reporting available as of August 18, 2026, is that the 14 million figure describes records, while approximately 5.1 million describes unique email addresses found in the released data. BleepingComputer reported the deduplicated count after the archive was analyzed, including by Have I Been Pwned.

Figure What it represents What it does not prove
More than 14 million Records ShinyHunters claimed to have stolen 14 million distinct people or customers
Approximately 5.1 million Unique email addresses identified in the published material 5.1 million confirmed human beings
Potentially fewer than 5.1 million A possible number of unique individuals after duplicate accounts and addresses are considered A final official affected-person total

A database can contain several rows for one account because of duplicate, historical or related records. One person can also create multiple MyPanera accounts or use more than one email address. Email addresses may be shared, abandoned or recycled. For those reasons, “14 million customers” is not an accurate description, and “5.1 million customers” remains shorthand rather than a confirmed population count.

What happened in January 2026?

ShinyHunters’ claim and the leaked archive

In late January 2026, the ShinyHunters extortion group claimed that it had obtained more than 14 million Panera records and had tried to pressure the company. The group said the data was published after that attempt was unsuccessful. That account comes from the attackers and reporting about their statements; Panera has not publicly confirmed every part of it.

How the lower figure was calculated

After an archive appeared on the group’s leak site, security researchers and Have I Been Pwned examined the contents. The approximately 5.1 million figure is a count of distinct email addresses in the material, making it a more useful measure than the raw record total but still not a verified count of unique people.

BleepingComputer described the archive as approximately 760 MB. Some secondary summaries have used a 760 GB figure, so the smaller, source-specific measurement should not be silently replaced with the larger one.

What information was reportedly exposed?

Available reporting identified the following categories:

Panera reportedly characterized the affected information as “contact information.” More than 26,000 unique addresses using the panerabread.com domain were reportedly present, suggesting that employee and customer records may coexist in the same material.

The reporting reviewed for this article does not establish that the January 2026 dataset contained Social Security numbers, passwords, full payment-card numbers or bank-account details. Those categories should not be reported as exposed without a specific company, regulator or forensic confirmation.

Panera’s privacy policy explains that the company collects payment information generally, but that policy is not evidence that payment data was included in this breach: Panera privacy policy.

Was payment information exposed?

No public account reviewed here confirms exposure of full credit-card numbers or bank details. The reported categories are contact information and account-related data, and Panera’s public description has been limited. That means readers should avoid two opposite mistakes: do not assume payment credentials were stolen, but also do not treat the available description as a guarantee that every other category was excluded.

If you can still access MyPanera, Panera’s privacy guidance says to remove debit-card, credit-card, gift-card and other payment information from an account that may have been compromised. Removing saved payment methods is a sensible precaution even though the available evidence does not show that full card numbers were in the leaked archive.

How attackers reportedly obtained access

Reporting linked the incident to a ShinyHunters campaign involving social engineering and single sign-on accounts. ShinyHunters reportedly told BleepingComputer that it obtained access through a Microsoft Entra SSO code. The broader campaign was described as using voice phishing, or vishing, against SSO accounts and authentication workflows.

What Panera has—and has not—made public

Panera reportedly notified authorities and described the affected information as contact information. In the coverage available by August 18, 2026, the company had not published a comprehensive customer notice confirming a final number of affected people or a complete forensic inventory of the data.

That public record can change. A later regulator filing, court document or company notice could clarify the population, the data fields and the initial-access timeline.

What you should do if you used Panera

  1. Change your Panera password. If the account still exists, sign in through the official Panera website or app and set a new, unique password.
  2. Change reused passwords elsewhere. Update every other service that used the same or a similar password. This is the main account-takeover risk when an exposed account identifier is combined with password reuse.
  3. Remove saved payment and gift-card information. Delete stored cards, gift-card balances and other payment details from MyPanera if you can access it or suspect compromise.
  4. Turn on multifactor authentication. Prioritize email, banking, shopping, cloud-storage and social-media accounts. Your email account deserves special attention because it can be used to reset other passwords.
  5. Expect convincing scams. Names, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses can support fake Panera reward, refund, delivery or account-support messages. Do not click links in unsolicited texts or emails; open the Panera app or type the official website address yourself.
  6. Check breach notifications. You can look up an email address and request alerts at Have I Been Pwned. A clean result is not proof that the address was absent from every copy of the leak.
  7. Review financial accounts and credit reports. Watch statements and obtain your reports from AnnualCreditReport.com. A credit freeze is generally more protective than monitoring alone and is free to place with the three major credit bureaus.
  8. Act on confirmed identity theft. If you see fraudulent accounts or transactions, use the federal recovery guidance at IdentityTheft.gov and contact the affected financial institution.

Replacing every bank card or buying an identity-theft subscription is not automatically necessary based only on the reported Panera categories. Those actions become more relevant if your bank confirms card exposure, you find unauthorized activity or later notices identify government-ID or financial data.

Do not confuse this with Panera’s 2024 breach

Important: The January 2026 ShinyHunters incident is separate from Panera breach notifications involving events in February and March 2024.
2026 incident Separate 2024 matter
Timing January 2026 reporting and leak-site publication Incidents reported for February and March 2024
Publicly cited population About 5.1 million unique email addresses in released material; final people count not established Indiana reporting listed approximately 136,302 affected individuals
Data description Names, email addresses, phone numbers, physical addresses and account information were reported Different notification and data descriptions; do not merge them with the 2026 dataset
Official records Public reporting and attacker-published material were the principal sources available by August 18, 2026 State breach-notification records exist, including California’s filing and Indiana’s report

A notice referring to the 2024 matter does not, by itself, confirm that the recipient is included in the 2026 leak, and vice versa.

What remains unknown

  • The final number of unique people affected after duplicate accounts and email addresses are removed.
  • Whether every record in the public archive is authentic, complete and current.
  • Whether passwords, full payment credentials, Social Security numbers or bank details were included.
  • The precise initial-access method, including whether the alleged Microsoft Entra SSO-code route is confirmed by an independent investigation.
  • Whether Panera will issue additional notices or regulators will publish further findings.

Bottom line

The defensible description is: ShinyHunters claimed more than 14 million stolen Panera records, while analysis of the released material identified approximately 5.1 million unique email addresses. The number of affected individuals may be lower, and the reported exposure centers on contact information rather than confirmed full payment or government-ID data. Change reused passwords, remove stored payment details, enable multifactor authentication and treat unexpected Panera-themed messages as potential phishing.
