They were not the lasting pricing system: in July, the government approved an OGRA-led daily mechanism based on a seven-working-day average of Platts prices. As of October 8, 2026, the Ministry of Energy was listing daily price notices.
Why Pakistan considered weekly petroleum price revisions
On March 4, 2026, Dawn reported that the government was preparing an emergency package as shipping disruption around the Strait of Hormuz curtailed trade movement and raised the cost of importing petroleum. The reported measures included weekly price revisions, compensation for oil companies facing higher insurance and import premiums, and fuel-conservation steps such as mandatory work from home. The stated aim was to “keep the markets liquid.”
Status matters: Dawn said a summary was being submitted to the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC). That report establishes a proposed package, not that the ECC or the government approved every measure described.
The Ministry of Finance’s March 4 account of the committee’s discussion confirms that officials were considering international petroleum benchmarks, freight and insurance costs, shipping routes, alternative sourcing, foreign-exchange implications, and the risk of supply disruption. It said the government was monitoring stocks and continuity of supply; it does not independently confirm each element of Dawn’s reported package.

Did weekly pricing keep fuel markets liquid?
“Keep the markets liquid” was the reported policy rationale, not a demonstrated result. The available official accounts do not quantify whether weekly revisions improved market liquidity or fuel availability. On March 24, the Ministry of Finance described national inventories as comfortable and supply lines as stable. That was the government’s assessment on that date; it does not show that weekly revisions caused the supply position.
How Pakistan’s petroleum-pricing system changed
In July, the government moved from the proposed weekly cadence to daily price determination and publication. The change retained a seven-day averaging basis, but officials described a different frequency and a more explicit role for OGRA.

The July 17 announcement, reported by Radio Pakistan, said OGRA would use the average Platts price over seven working days and disclose the components of the retail price. The Ministry of Energy said on July 18 that the Federal Cabinet had approved the transition from weekly to daily pricing, describing the arrangement as formula-based and anchored in market fundamentals. The minister clarified on July 20 that the previous weekly system also used a seven-day average. So the key change was the frequency of price-setting and publication and OGRA’s announced role—not simply the introduction of an averaging period.
How often does Pakistan change fuel prices now?
As of October 8, 2026, daily publication was the reported practice: the Ministry of Energy’s latest-news index listed petroleum-price notices for October 8, October 7, October 6, and earlier dates. This describes the system and notices shown on that date; it does not establish what will happen after it.

What could change next?
At its September 3 meeting, the Petroleum Pricing Committee reviewed pricing reforms, including principles for intervention in diesel price shocks and steps intended to improve predictability and transparency. The committee described June 2027 as a likely target for petrol deregulation, not a completed reform or a guaranteed implementation date. Readers should distinguish that stated target from the daily pricing system already announced and reflected in the Ministry of Energy’s October notices.
