Pakistan opened a road transit corridor through Iran in April 2026 and dispatched its first reported consignment of frozen meat from Karachi toward Tashkent, Uzbekistan. The cargo was carried by refrigerated trucks under the Transports Internationaux Routiers (TIR) system. Available reports confirm dispatch, not arrival in Tashkent, and do not establish that the new route has already reduced delivery times or costs.
What is the new Pakistan–Iran transit corridor?
It is a road freight route intended to move Pakistani cargo through Iran toward Central Asian markets. Nukta reported that the corridor formally opened on April 10, 2026; the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) reported on April 14 that Pakistan had operationalised it. The reports describe an inaugural consignment, not a confirmed schedule of regular commercial services.

Where did the first shipment go, and what was it carrying?
The reported itinerary began in Karachi, passed through Gabd near Gwadar, entered Iran at Rimdan, and continued toward Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Pakistan Today reported that Customs Transit Trade Director Sanaullah Abro identified the cargo as frozen meat carried in refrigerated trucks; Nukta described the inaugural consignment as frozen beef.
Although APP’s headline says the shipment “reaches” Tashkent, its article body says it was dispatched from Karachi to Tashkent. The other reports describe it as travelling toward Uzbekistan or Central Asia. On that evidence, arrival at its destination is unconfirmed.

What TIR means for the route
TIR stands for Transports Internationaux Routiers. APP describes the framework as designed to facilitate cross-border trade by reducing transit delays and transport costs. Pakistan Today reported that the Directorate of Transit Trade Customs said procedures had been streamlined. Those descriptions concern the system’s purpose and launch preparations; they are not measurements of savings or performance on the inaugural journey.
Pakistan Today also reported that Taftan, Rimdan, Sost, and Gwadar were activated for TIR transit. That is a list of enabled crossing points, not a statement that the first shipment travelled through all of them.
How the route compares with other options
The Pakistan Business Council’s The Republic of Uzbekistan: Market Access 2025–26 presents broader route estimates for access to Uzbekistan. Its transit-time estimates are based on pilot data and interview assessments. They do not measure the inaugural Gabd–Rimdan shipment.
| Route in the report | Estimated distance | Estimated transit time | Reported considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Afghanistan | 2,318 km | 6–10 days | Security volatility and informal transit points |
| Iran/Turkmenistan | 3,999 km | 10–12 days | Customs differences and limited dry ports |
| China | 3,610 km | 13–16 days | Not stated in the report excerpt |
These figures are comparison estimates in the Council’s 2025–26 report, not confirmed transit times, tariffs, or costs for the newly opened route via Gabd and Rimdan. The report’s Iran/Turkmenistan route is a broader comparison and should not be treated as a record of the inaugural trip.
Are time or cost savings established?
No measured savings are established in the available accounts. Officials and business representatives described the corridor as a potential alternative that could improve regional connectivity, trade flows, and activity at Gwadar; reports also relay expectations of shorter transit times or lower logistics costs. The sources provide no audited before-and-after delivery times, route tariffs, shipment costs, recurring cargo volumes, or evidence of a regular service.
Gwadar Chamber of Commerce and Industry President J. Hoth said: “Gwadar has the potential to become the centre of regional economic activity, connecting Pakistan with global markets,” as quoted by APP. That is a statement of potential, not a measured forecast of the corridor’s economic impact.
Quick Recap
What the opening establishes—and what remains unknown
- Established in reports: Pakistan opened the corridor and dispatched an inaugural frozen-meat consignment from Karachi toward Uzbekistan under TIR.
- Not established: confirmed delivery in Tashkent, regular service frequency, realized transit times, tariffs, shipment costs, or recurring cargo volumes.
- For route comparisons: the Pakistan Business Council figures describe broader alternatives and estimates; they are not operating results for this inaugural shipment.
