Orchard Robotics announced a $22 million Series A on September 3, 2025, as it tries to make specialty-crop farming more measurable. The round was led by Quiet Capital and Shine Capital, with returning investors General Catalyst and Contrary. Orchard says the financing brings its total funding to more than $25 million.
The company is not currently selling an autonomous apple-picking machine. Its nearer-term product is a camera system mounted on tractors or other farm vehicles, paired with computer vision and farm-management software. The goal is to create a detailed, repeatable inventory of fruit, plants, and crop conditions so growers can make better decisions about labor, inputs, harvests, and sales.

Orchard said it would use the money to expand its team, open a San Francisco office, increase research and development, broaden crop coverage, and accelerate commercial deployment. AgFunderNews reported that the company planned to double its team. The funding announcement does not provide a detailed breakdown showing how much will go toward hardware, software, field operations, sales, or artificial-intelligence development.
Who founded Orchard Robotics?
Orchard was founded in 2022 by Charlie Wu, its chief executive. Wu studied computer science at Cornell, left the university, and became a Thiel Fellow. His interest in the problem was influenced by his grandparents’ experience as apple farmers in China and by conversations with fruit researchers at Cornell.
“Cornell dropout” is part of the founder’s biography and the funding story’s news hook. It is not evidence that Orchard’s technology works, that its business is profitable, or that its products outperform alternatives.
What problem is Orchard trying to solve?
Specialty-crop growers need to make decisions about pruning, thinning, spraying, irrigation, labor, harvest timing, sales, and distribution. Yet many decisions are based on manual field scouting and samples that cover only a small portion of a farm.
Orchard says manual sampling can cover less than 0.01% of a crop. That is a company-provided estimate, not an independently established industry-wide statistic. The underlying issue is nevertheless straightforward: a grower may need block-level or tree-level information, while conventional sampling offers only a limited snapshot.

Orchard is therefore targeting an information and measurement problem. Its system is intended to help answer questions such as:
- How many fruits are present?
- Where are they located?
- How large or mature do they appear?
- How is crop load distributed across trees, vines, blocks, or fields?
- Which areas may require attention from workers or managers?
Better measurements could be valuable, but measurements alone do not guarantee lower costs, higher yields, better sustainability, or higher profits. Those outcomes depend on accuracy, timing, farm practices, and whether a grower can act on the information.

The basic workflow is a retrofit rather than a replacement for existing farm machinery:
- A camera module is mounted on a tractor, ATV, or another farm vehicle.
- The vehicle travels through orchard or vineyard rows.
- The system captures high-resolution images of plants and fruit.
- Computer-vision models identify and estimate traits such as fruit count, size, color, distribution, and apparent health.
- GPS and image processing associate observations with particular plants, rows, blocks, or other farm locations.
- The results are processed and delivered through Orchard’s software.
An earlier product description reported capture rates of up to 100 images per second and mapping to within a few inches. That is an earlier reported specification, not necessarily the current specification for every deployment.
Image analysis should also be distinguished from direct measurement. Fruit count and visible color are image-derived observations. “Health” may refer to a model-generated indicator rather than a laboratory diagnosis. A management recommendation is a further step beyond either observation or estimate.

What Orchard sells
As of August 18, 2026, Orchard’s website presents three main components:
- FruitScope Vision: an AI camera system that mounts to tractors and other farm vehicles.
- FruitScope Vault: a system of record for crop and farm data.
- FruitScope OS: farm-management software intended to turn crop measurements into operational decisions.
The company also lists Canary, an AI decision-making product marked “coming soon.” Orchard describes its longer-term ambition as an “AI farmer,” but that phrase represents a future vision rather than a currently autonomous farm operator.
The current public product is best understood as sensing, mapping, analytics, and software. It does not establish that Orchard can independently prune trees, spray fields, hire workers, harvest fruit, negotiate sales, or run a farm without human oversight.
Current operating claims
Orchard says FruitScope Vision operates at speeds from 1 to 12 miles per hour. The company says processing occurs on-device and overnight, with typical results available the next morning. It describes its access model as per-acre pricing paid annually, with discounts for large acreage, but does not publish a dollar price.
The company also says it provides in-field setup, training, and support at no charge to growers, and that its products are designed, assembled, and supported in the United States. These are current company claims, not independent performance tests.

Orchard lists apples, wine and table grapes, blueberries, cherries, almonds, pistachios, and citrus. Earlier coverage also mentioned expansion into strawberries. The company says growers, warehouses, sales desks, and farm-management companies in the United States and elsewhere use its technology, but the cited public materials do not establish a complete customer list, customer count, acreage under management, retention rate, or geographic breakdown.
Why specialty crops are difficult for AI systems
Orchards and vineyards are not controlled factory environments. Lighting changes throughout the day, foliage can hide fruit, and dust, rain, glare, vibration, and dirty lenses can affect image quality. Cultivars, trellis systems, pruning styles, row spacing, terrain, canopy density, and orchard age can also change what a camera sees.
That creates several practical questions:
- How often are fruit missed or counted twice?
- Does performance change in dense canopies or poor lighting?
- Are models validated across cultivars and production systems?
- Can GPS or row-mapping errors be detected and corrected?
- Is next-morning information fast enough for the decision at hand?
- Is an estimate useful for an entire farm but unreliable for an individual tree?
A system can collect extensive imagery while still producing uncertain recommendations. Coverage is not the same as accuracy, and accuracy is not the same as financial return.

Bloomfield’s reported acquisition by Kubota is relevant to the broader agricultural-technology landscape. It does not make Kubota an Orchard competitor without specific evidence.
What growers should evaluate before buying
A grower considering Orchard or a comparable system should request evidence and contract details rather than relying on the phrase “AI-powered.” Important questions include:
- Crop fit: Is the specific crop, cultivar, and production system supported?
- Farm geometry: Can the vehicle safely navigate the rows, trellises, slopes, and canopy?
- Accuracy: What are detection and counting results under different weather, lighting, and occlusion conditions?
- Timing: Does next-morning delivery fit the operational window for thinning, spraying, pruning, or harvest?
- Integration: Can data connect with farm-management, GIS, machinery, labor, or spray-planning systems?
- Cost: What is the per-acre fee, and what additional costs arise from vehicle time, connectivity, maintenance, support, or data migration?
- Data rights: Who owns raw imagery, derived measurements, farm records, and models trained on the data?
- Portability: Can the grower export data in usable formats if the contract ends?
- ROI: Is there evidence of labor savings, reduced inputs, lower crop loss, improved forecasts, or better sales outcomes?
Buyers should also ask how the system handles a blocked lens, misalignment, vibration, poor imagery, missed fruit, double counts, and failed or delayed uploads. Detailed measurements have limited value if the farm lacks the labor or equipment to respond.
What the $22 million does—and does not—prove
The financing is meaningful for an early-stage agtech company because it gives Orchard capital to hire, develop models and hardware, support field deployments, and expand beyond its initial crop focus. The reported participation of returning investors also indicates continued backing from some existing financial supporters.
But venture funding is not the same as commercial validation. The available announcement does not disclose Orchard’s valuation, revenue, profitability, customer economics, unit costs, or independent accuracy results. It also does not show whether the company’s per-acre model produces attractive margins after installation, field support, hardware replacement, and crop-specific model development.
Per-acre pricing could make the product easier for growers to adopt than buying specialized machinery outright. It may also create a scalable recurring-revenue model. At the same time, supporting many crops and farm configurations can require significant data collection, customer service, hardware logistics, and model validation.
The bottom line
Orchard Robotics’ near-term opportunity is not autonomous farming. It is turning farm vehicles into mobile crop scouts and converting images into a digital record that growers can use for measurement and decision support.

Orchard will need to demonstrate dependable performance under real field conditions, integrate with daily farm workflows, protect and export customer data, and show measurable economic value. For growers, those questions matter more than the funding headline.
