The reductions were linked in secondary reporting to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, but Oracle did not publicly confirm the specific business units or explain the Seattle cuts. Subsequent notices disclosed further Oracle job reductions elsewhere in Washington in September 2025 and March 2026.
What happened in Seattle?
On August 13, 2025, Oracle filed a notice with Washington state’s Employment Security Department indicating plans to cut 161 employees in the Seattle area. The reported effective date was October 15, 2025. GeekWire reported the notice and said Oracle did not respond to requests for comment. The report did not say that Oracle’s Seattle office was closing. GeekWire’s account of the notice describes planned job cuts; it should not be read as a company announcement that all 161 terminations had already occurred when the notice was filed.
Which teams and roles were reportedly affected?
GeekWire relayed reporting by DatacenterDynamics that the broader reductions affected Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) and related functions. Reported roles included data-center operations technicians and technical project managers associated with AI and machine-learning work, alongside other cloud-related positions. That account does not establish a complete, official role-by-role breakdown of the 161 Seattle jobs, and Oracle did not publicly confirm it.
The broader cuts were reported to affect teams in the United States, Canada, and India. The available reporting did not establish a definitive worldwide layoff total, so the Seattle figure should not be treated as Oracle’s global total.

How could Oracle cut jobs while its cloud business was growing?
Cloud revenue growth and workforce reductions can occur at the same time. A company can expand a business while changing which functions, locations, and roles it funds. In Oracle’s case, the 2025 cuts coincided with rapid cloud growth and major investment in AI-oriented data-center capacity. That is useful context, but it does not establish why Oracle selected the Seattle positions.
What Oracle reported about cloud growth
In results released September 9, 2025, Oracle said fiscal 2026 first-quarter cloud revenue was $7.2 billion, up 28% year over year, and OCI revenue was $3.3 billion, up 55%. Oracle also said it expected OCI revenue to reach $18 billion in fiscal 2026. These are company-reported figures and guidance, not explanations for the August workforce notice. Oracle’s fiscal 2026 first-quarter results also described plans to expand data-center capacity.

Why infrastructure investment does not translate directly into more jobs
AI cloud expansion requires substantial spending on data centers, power, cooling, networking, and computing equipment. In March 2026, Oracle’s fiscal third-quarter results included fiscal 2026 capital-expenditure guidance of $50 billion. That later guidance shows the scale of the company’s infrastructure plans; it was not information available when the Seattle notice was announced. Oracle’s fiscal 2026 third-quarter results provide the company’s stated financial context.
Investment in infrastructure can rise even as a company reduces selected teams or reallocates staff. The available evidence supports a picture of expansion alongside workforce changes—not a confirmed claim that Oracle cut these Seattle jobs to pay for AI or that AI directly replaced the affected employees.

What was Oracle’s Seattle presence?
Oracle had a substantial regional presence, but published headcount figures were estimates rather than official company disclosures. GeekWire cited LinkedIn data indicating more than 4,000 Oracle employees in the Seattle region at the time of its August 2025 report. A later MyNorthwest report put the regional figure at about 3,900 as of June 2025 and about 3,800 by the following fall. These estimates use different reported snapshots and should not be treated as a verified count of employees lost.
Oracle’s Puget Sound operations included a Cloud Experience Center and engineering work. Later reporting also described a reduced office footprint, including departure from a downtown Bellevue location and less Seattle office space. A smaller physical footprint is not, by itself, proof that the company closed its Seattle operations or that every estimated headcount decline resulted from layoffs. What happened after the 161-job notice?
Later Washington notices show that Oracle’s August 2025 announcement was followed by additional reductions. The figures below describe separate notices and periods; they are not a verified count of unique employees across Washington or Seattle.

The September notice was covered by MyNorthwest. GeekWire reported that the March 2026 notice covered more than 230 software developers as well as management, product, program, technical, and user-experience roles. That notice said the offices were not closing. GeekWire’s March 2026 report describes the state-level filing and affected roles; the 491 figure covers Washington, not Seattle alone.

What is confirmed about AI’s role—and what is not?
Oracle’s AI and cloud infrastructure expansion is documented in its financial announcements. Later reporting on the 2026 Washington notice also described executives’ claims that AI coding tools let smaller engineering teams deliver more quickly. That is relevant context for the later reductions, but it does not establish that AI directly caused the 161 Seattle cuts in 2025.
- Documented: the Seattle notice’s reported count and timing; Oracle’s reported cloud and OCI growth; and the company’s later infrastructure investment guidance.
- Reported, not an Oracle-confirmed Seattle breakdown: the connection between the broader 2025 cuts and OCI, and the descriptions of affected job types.
- Not established: that Oracle said the 161 Seattle jobs were eliminated to fund AI, or that AI systems directly replaced those workers.
For workers evaluating what a notice means, a planned reduction is distinct from a completed termination, and a state-wide notice is distinct from a Seattle-only count. The published reports do not provide an official Oracle explanation of the 161 positions or a verified global total for the broader cuts.
