OpenAI’s GPT-5.4 Brought Native Computer Use to Codex and the API—and Expanded Its Excel and Google Sheets Push

GPT-5.4 launched native computer-use capabilities for the API and Codex, alongside ChatGPT for Excel. Google Sheets followed later, and the spreadsheet tools now involve separate availability, licensing, and governance considerations.

OpenAI announced GPT-5.4 on March 5, 2026, introducing native computer-use capabilities in its API and Codex alongside a finance-focused Excel experience. The headline needs some qualification: computer use is not a universal ChatGPT desktop-control switch, “financial plugins” are more accurately described as integrations and connected data sources, and Google Sheets arrived later.

Excel entered beta on March 5, Google Sheets entered beta on April 22, and both became generally available across plans on May 5. OpenAI’s later update says the spreadsheet experiences are powered by GPT-5.5, not GPT-5.4. OpenAI’s GPT-5.4 announcement and its spreadsheet update provide the key timeline.

The short version

  • GPT-5.4 launched on March 5, 2026 in ChatGPT as GPT-5.4 Thinking, in the API as gpt-5.4, and in Codex.
  • Native computer use means a developer-provided agent can interpret screenshots and use keyboard and mouse actions. It does not mean every ChatGPT user automatically receives unrestricted control of a personal computer.
  • ChatGPT for Excel launched in beta on March 5. It works in a sidebar inside Excel and can create, analyze, and update workbooks.
  • Google Sheets followed later: beta began April 22 and general availability for both spreadsheet products began May 5.
  • Financial integrations can connect workflows to sources such as Moody’s, Dow Jones Factiva, MSCI, Third Bridge, MT Newswires, and—originally announced as coming soon—FactSet. Access may require a separate license or administrator approval.

What OpenAI launched with GPT-5.4

OpenAI positioned GPT-5.4 as a general-purpose model for professional work, combining reasoning, coding, tool use, document analysis, spreadsheets, presentations, and longer-running agentic tasks.

The launch covered several versions and surfaces:

  • GPT-5.4 Thinking: the ChatGPT version designed for more demanding reasoning and professional tasks.
  • gpt-5.4: the API model for developers building applications and agents.
  • GPT-5.4 in Codex: intended for coding and agentic development workflows.
  • GPT-5.4 Pro: a higher-performance version available through the API and selected ChatGPT plans.

OpenAI also highlighted improved coding, tool use, visual understanding, document parsing, token efficiency, tool search for larger tool ecosystems, and support for very long contexts. The API documentation lists a 1.05-million-token context window, a maximum output of 128,000 tokens, and support for computer use, MCP, tool search, code interpreter, hosted shell, apply patch, and Skills. The GPT-5.4 API documentation lists the current technical details.

Those capabilities matter most to developers building agents that work across large document collections or multiple business tools. They should not be confused with a guarantee that an ordinary spreadsheet user can load a huge workbook and receive a perfectly audited financial model.

What “native computer use” actually means

GPT-5.4 can work with screenshots and issue computer actions such as clicks, typing, scrolling, and keyboard commands. It can also generate code for computer-control libraries such as Playwright.

A typical agent might:

  1. Receive a task from a user or business application.
  2. Inspect a screenshot of the available software.
  3. Identify the relevant button, field, worksheet, or browser page.
  4. Click or type through the interface.
  5. Check the resulting screen and correct errors.
  6. Ask for confirmation before sending, publishing, submitting, or otherwise taking an irreversible action.

The important limitation is architectural: the developer or product must supply the computer-use tool, environment, permissions, and confirmation rules. GPT-5.4 does not automatically take over a user’s computer merely because the model exists. OpenAI describes the updated computer tool primarily in the API and Codex context. OpenAI’s launch post explains the capability and its deployment.

How reliable is it?

OpenAI reported a 75.0% score on OSWorld-Verified, compared with 47.3% for GPT-5.2 and a cited human-performance comparison of 72.4%. OSWorld-Verified tests desktop navigation using screenshots and keyboard and mouse actions.

That is evidence of progress, not a production reliability guarantee. Enterprise applications introduce authentication challenges, pop-ups, unstable layouts, proprietary interfaces, hidden data, and permission boundaries that may not appear in a benchmark. A successful task can also contain unsafe intermediate actions. Financial, legal, and irreversible operations still warrant human supervision.

ChatGPT for Excel

ChatGPT for Excel is a spreadsheet-native experience shown in a sidebar inside Excel. It is designed to work directly with the workbook rather than merely returning a text answer in a separate chat window.

OpenAI says it can help users:

  • Build new workbooks and financial models.
  • Update existing models.
  • Analyze large, multi-tab files.
  • Explain formulas, references, assumptions, and linked sheets.
  • Run scenarios and sensitivity analyses.
  • Clean up labels and formatting.
  • Review KPI, planning, reporting, and forecasting work.
  • Explain what changed after inputs are updated.

The product is intended to preserve workbook structure, formulas, assumptions, and Excel-native formatting. That is an important design goal, but not a promise that every formula, chart, named range, conditional format, macro, or external link will survive every operation. OpenAI’s Help Center tells users to review changed cells and formulas before saving or sharing. The Excel and Google Sheets Help Center article documents the workflow and limitations.

Google Sheets came later

Google Sheets was not available in the initial March 5 announcement. OpenAI described it as coming soon, announced a beta on April 22, and said on May 5 that Excel and Google Sheets were generally available across plans.

The Google Sheets experience is separate but similar. It can create spreadsheets, answer questions about existing files, update cells and formulas through natural-language instructions, and explain or summarize spreadsheet content. Skills and connected apps may be available where enabled.

As of the later product update, OpenAI says both spreadsheet experiences are powered by GPT-5.5. Therefore, it is inaccurate to describe the current Excel and Google Sheets products simply as GPT-5.4 features, even though they were introduced alongside the GPT-5.4 announcement.

Financial integrations are not simply “plugins”

OpenAI’s launch materials used terms such as financial-data integrations, apps, and connected data sources. Examples included:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Moody’s
  • Dow Jones Factiva
  • MSCI
  • Third Bridge
  • MT Newswires
  • FactSet, listed as coming soon in the original announcement

These connections are intended to bring market information, company research, filings, transcripts, presentations, and other financial material into ChatGPT workflows. Developers can also connect proprietary sources through apps or MCP-based systems. The original provider list appears in OpenAI’s Excel announcement.

A connection does not necessarily include a provider’s entire subscription database. Availability can depend on geography, plan, workspace configuration, administrator approval, organizational authorization, and an existing license. Data freshness, entitlements, redistribution rights, and permitted uses remain the responsibility of the customer and provider.

These integrations retrieve and organize evidence; they do not independently verify every market number or turn GPT-5.4 into a licensed investment adviser. Users should check source dates, definitions, currencies, reporting periods, and citations before relying on an output.

How Codex can work with Excel

OpenAI’s documented workflow allows Codex in the ChatGPT desktop app to work with an open Microsoft Excel workbook through the ChatGPT for Excel add-in:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install ChatGPT for Excel.
  2. Sign in to the add-in.
  3. Open an existing workbook or create one in Excel.
  4. Open the ChatGPT desktop app and select Codex.
  5. Mention @Microsoft Excel or ask Codex to work with the open workbook.
  6. Review the changes before saving or sharing.

OpenAI says this direct Codex workflow is currently for Microsoft Excel. Computer use is optional, and direct control may not be appropriate for every spreadsheet request.

What this could mean for finance teams

Financial modeling and forecasting

An assistant can help reconcile assumptions across tabs, explain model dependencies, build scenarios, and update recurring forecast structures. The time savings are greatest when the work is repetitive but reviewable.

Budgeting and variance analysis

Natural-language requests can help compare actuals with budgets, identify unusual variances, and prepare summaries. The analyst still needs to define the period, sign convention, currency, materiality threshold, and source of truth.

Due diligence and research

Connected financial sources can reduce manual copying between filings, research, transcripts, and workbooks. The important control is preserving citations and checking that the retrieved information is licensed, current, and applicable to the question.

Reporting and model maintenance

GPT-powered tools may be useful for recurring reporting packs, formula explanations, formatting cleanup, and controlled updates. They are less suitable for unsupervised submission of regulatory reports, movement of money, trade execution, or distribution of unreviewed results.

Risks and controls

Before using an AI agent on a financial workbook, finance teams should account for:

  • Wrong-sheet edits: similarly named tabs can lead to changes in the wrong place.
  • Formula drift: a copied formula may use an incorrect relative reference.
  • Hard-coded values: a displayed result may be pasted as a number instead of remaining a live formula.
  • Broken links: external workbooks and data sources may be unavailable.
  • Formatting loss: charts, named ranges, conditional formatting, and custom number formats may require inspection.
  • Hidden data: hidden rows, columns, comments, or worksheets may be overlooked.
  • Stale data: connected sources may not reflect the latest filing, estimate, price, or corporate action.
  • Ambiguous assumptions: “update the forecast” is incomplete without a scenario, period, currency, and source hierarchy.
  • Permission and authentication failures: admin restrictions, MFA, expired sessions, and pop-ups can stop a task.
  • Prompt injection: malicious instructions embedded in a workbook, document, or website may attempt to redirect the agent.
  • Confidentiality exposure: prompts, outputs, logs, and connected data must comply with company policy.

A practical minimum-control checklist is:

  • Work on a copy or a version-controlled file.
  • State the exact workbook, worksheet, range, period, and assumptions.
  • Require a change summary.
  • Review formulas—not just displayed values.
  • Check hidden cells, external links, citations, and source dates.
  • Recalculate and reconcile key totals independently.
  • Disable autonomous sending, publishing, submission, permission changes, and financial transactions.
  • Preserve version history, approvals, and human sign-off.

Access and pricing

According to OpenAI’s current Help Center documentation, ChatGPT for Excel and Google Sheets are available globally to Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Edu, and K-12 users. Free and Go users have limited usage, while Plus and Pro are subject to agentic usage limits. Business, Enterprise, Edu, and K-12 usage follows the applicable credit and plan terms after the free preview period that ended June 2, 2026.

Administrators can control access to spreadsheet experiences, apps, and connected data sources. Enterprise controls described by OpenAI include role-based access controls, compliance support, Enterprise Key Management, and data and inference residency where available.

API pricing is separate from ChatGPT subscriptions, Excel or Google Workspace licensing, and financial-data subscriptions. The GPT-5.4 API documentation lists:

Model Input Cached input Output
gpt-5.4 $2.50 per 1 million tokens $0.25 per 1 million tokens $15 per 1 million tokens
gpt-5.4-pro $30 per 1 million tokens Not listed $180 per 1 million tokens

Requests above 272,000 input tokens receive higher documented pricing treatment: 2× input and 1.5× output under the stated standard, batch, and flex rules. Computer-use and other tool calls may add separate charges. See the official model pricing documentation for current terms.

Bottom line

GPT-5.4’s significance was not simply that an AI model could click buttons. OpenAI connected reasoning, coding, computer interaction, spreadsheet editing, and professional data workflows in one broader platform. For finance teams, the opportunity is faster model maintenance, research, reconciliation, and reporting—not hands-off financial decision-making.

The technology is most valuable when tasks are clearly specified, data access is approved, changes are reviewable, and a human validates formulas and outputs. Treat computer use as supervised automation, financial integrations as licensed data connections, and spreadsheet edits as proposed changes until independently checked.
