Status: OpenAI’s India promotion was genuine, but it ended on January 21, 2026. New users cannot redeem that offer now.
The promotion gave eligible users in India 12 months of ChatGPT Go at no cost. It was not a free year of ChatGPT Plus or Pro, and a payment method was still required during sign-up.

What OpenAI offered
OpenAI launched a limited India promotion offering eligible users 12 months of ChatGPT Go for ₹0. Redemption began on November 4, 2025, in connection with OpenAI’s first DevDay Exchange event in India. Contemporary reporting covered the announcement in late October 2025, including TechCrunch’s report.
OpenAI’s release notes later recorded that the promotion ended on January 21, 2026. That means pages or social posts still presenting the deal as available are outdated or misleading.
#1 Best Overall
Who was eligible?
OpenAI described the promotion as available to eligible users in India who were:
- New to ChatGPT;
- Using the ChatGPT Free plan; or
- Already subscribed to ChatGPT Go.
Eligibility was not an unconditional guarantee for every person in India. Users needed an eligible account, had to redeem during the promotional period, and had to meet any account, region, platform, and checkout requirements displayed by OpenAI. The offer was limited to one redemption per account.
Was a promo code required?
No. OpenAI said no promo code was required. While it was active, users redeemed the offer through ChatGPT’s normal plan or upgrade flow rather than through a third-party coupon website.

How redemption worked historically
The following were the steps users would have followed while the promotion was available. They are included as a historical explanation—not as a working route in 2026:
- Open the official ChatGPT website or official ChatGPT app.
- Sign in to an eligible account, or create an account.
- Open the plan, account, or upgrade area.
- Look for the India-specific ChatGPT Go promotion.
- Select the offer showing 12 months at no cost.
- Add an accepted payment method: a credit card or UPI.
- Check that the checkout page clearly displayed the promotional price, such as ₹0, before confirming.
- Complete the subscription and save the confirmation details.
- Verify in the account’s plan and billing sections that ChatGPT Go was active and that the promotional period was recorded.
Because the offer ended on January 21, 2026, the promotion should no longer appear for new redemptions.
Rank #2
Why was payment information required for a free offer?
OpenAI required a payment method even though the promotional period itself cost nothing. The published payment options were credit card and UPI.
This allowed the subscription to be established and could also create future billing obligations after the promotional period. Before confirming, users should have checked:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- The plan name—ChatGPT Go, not Plus or Pro;
- The amount displayed for the promotional period;
- The renewal date;
- The post-promotion price shown at checkout;
- Whether a recurring card charge or UPI mandate was being created; and
- Which platform controlled billing and cancellation.
Reports of small verification authorizations should not be treated as a universal ₹1 or ₹2 OpenAI policy unless they appear in the user’s own billing record.
What happened to existing ChatGPT Go subscribers?
OpenAI said existing ChatGPT Go members might have the promotion added automatically at the end of their current billing cycle. That wording was conditional, not a guarantee that every existing subscriber would receive it immediately.
Users who subscribed through the web, Google Play, or Apple’s App Store could also have different billing and cancellation controls. The relevant subscription platform—not a generic online guide—determined where payment details and renewal settings were managed.
What did ChatGPT Go include?
At launch in India, OpenAI positioned Go above the Free plan and below higher-priced plans. According to OpenAI’s ChatGPT Go information, it included the Free plan’s features plus:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- More messages;
- Larger file uploads;
- Expanded image generation;
- Access to advanced data analysis; and
- Longer memory for more personalized responses.
Go was priced at ₹399 per month, including GST, when it launched in India. That is a historical launch price, not necessarily the current price. Plan prices, availability, feature access, and usage limits can change, so readers should check the live ChatGPT pricing page.
What the promotion did not include
- It was not a free year of ChatGPT Plus.
- It was not a free year of ChatGPT Pro.
- It did not permanently make paid ChatGPT features free in India.
- It did not remove usage limits entirely.
- It did not guarantee access to every model, tool, or feature offered in higher-priced plans.
- It did not extend eligibility to users outside India.
Calling it “free ChatGPT for a year” is therefore imprecise. The Free plan already existed; the promotion covered the paid Go tier for qualifying Indian accounts.
If you redeemed the offer, check your billing now
People who claimed the promotion should not assume that their account remains free. Depending on their actions, plan terms, and billing platform, they may have:
- Converted to a paid Go subscription;
- Cancelled before the promotional period ended;
- Lost access after cancellation or expiration; or
- Returned to the Free plan.
There was no single guaranteed outcome for every account. Check the plan and billing sections of ChatGPT, along with the relevant Google Play or Apple subscription page if the subscription was started through an app store. Review the renewal date, current plan, listed price, payment method, and any active UPI mandate.

Cancellation can affect access differently depending on the platform and the specific promotion terms. Follow the cancellation confirmation and the account’s displayed expiration date rather than relying on a general claim that cancellation will either preserve or immediately end access.
Common problems users encountered
The offer did not appear
Possible explanations included an ineligible region, an account that had already redeemed the promotion, an existing subscription to another plan, a platform rollout delay, an outdated app, or the fact that the promotion had ended. Users should have checked the official ChatGPT website, updated the official app, and reviewed the plan page directly.
The checkout page requested a card or UPI
That was expected under OpenAI’s published terms. The important check was whether the correct ChatGPT Go promotion and ₹0 promotional price were clearly displayed before confirmation.
A user was charged
Review the plan name, billing history, renewal settings, and the platform that processed the payment. A charge may indicate that the wrong plan was selected, the promotion was not applied, or the promotional period had ended. If the charge appears erroneous, contact OpenAI through its official support channel or the relevant app-store billing process. Do not assume a refund is automatic.
A user cancelled and lost access
Cancellation behavior can vary by platform and promotion terms. Check the cancellation confirmation and displayed end date in the account rather than relying on universal advice.

How to avoid fake activation offers
The expired promotion has created an opportunity for scams. Do not use:
- VPNs to pretend to be in India;
- Third-party “activation” websites;
- Unofficial APKs or browser extensions;
- Telegram, WhatsApp, or marketplace sellers;
- Shared or “lifetime” ChatGPT accounts; or
- Links asking for an OpenAI password, UPI PIN, one-time password, or remote-device access.
The safe route is the official ChatGPT website or official app. A legitimate current plan should be visible through OpenAI’s own account and pricing pages; there is no legitimate new redemption route for the ended India offer.
What can Indian users choose now?
The expired promotion should not be confused with current subscription options. Users can compare the live plans on OpenAI’s pricing page:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Option | Best suited to | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Free | Casual use without a subscription | Features and limits can change. |
| ChatGPT Go | Users wanting more access than Free, where available | Confirm current India availability and price. |
| ChatGPT Plus | Users needing more capability or higher limits | It was not the tier included in the 2025 promotion. |
| ChatGPT Pro | Heavy individual users with demanding workloads | Usually excessive for casual use and not a replacement for the low-cost offer. |
Readers may also compare other services, such as Google’s Google One AI plans, but should separately verify regional availability, current pricing, included models, storage, privacy terms, and renewal rules.
