On August 29, 2024, OpenAI said ChatGPT had more than 200 million weekly active users—about twice the 100 million it reported in November 2023. The comparison was roughly nine months apart, not a same-month year-over-year measurement. OpenAI supplied the figure; it was not an independently audited count, and it has since been surpassed by later company disclosures.
What OpenAI announced—and when
OpenAI’s August 29, 2024 announcement put ChatGPT above 200 million weekly active users. The comparison point was 100 million weekly active users in November 2023, according to figures OpenAI disclosed and Reuters reported. On those rounded figures, the increase was at least about 100 million, or roughly a doubling. Because the later figure was “more than” 200 million, it should not be read as exactly 200 million.
The phrase “double from last year” is broadly understandable but imprecise. The disclosed comparison ran from November 2023 to August 2024—about nine months—and was not a precise August-to-August annual comparison. Reuters’ account of the announcement also reported separate claims about business adoption and API usage.
What “weekly active users” tells you
A weekly active user is generally someone who uses a service during a seven-day period. It is a measure of reach over time, not a count of paying customers, registered accounts, or people who use the service every day.

The public announcement did not establish a complete counting methodology. It did not specify whether people with multiple accounts were deduplicated, whether activity required a login, how business and consumer accounts were treated, or whether API activity was included. It also did not provide retention, usage-frequency, regional, or satisfaction data. The figure is best described as OpenAI’s reported measure of ChatGPT weekly use, not as a verified count of unique individuals.
- Weekly active users: people or accounts active within a week, according to the publisher’s chosen method.
- Subscribers and paying business users: customers paying for particular offerings; these are not interchangeable with all weekly users.
- API usage: developers’ or organizations’ use of OpenAI models in their own applications, distinct from ChatGPT use.
Why usage may have grown
The timing coincided with changes to ChatGPT and OpenAI’s model lineup, but the announcement does not establish that any one feature caused the increase. ChatGPT had expanded beyond text conversation into areas such as voice, image understanding, file analysis, and coding assistance. Improvements and new capabilities can make a product useful to more people, but the available figures do not isolate their effect on user growth.

New models and lower-cost API access
OpenAI launched GPT-4o in May 2024 and GPT-4o mini in July 2024. Reuters reported that OpenAI said API usage doubled after GPT-4o mini launched, describing the model as cheaper and less energy-intensive. That was an API-usage claim, not evidence that ChatGPT’s consumer audience doubled because of the model. The two measures concern related products but different kinds of use.
Consumer familiarity and workplace interest
By 2024, ChatGPT had become a familiar name among consumers, which may have lowered the barrier to trying it. This is plausible context, not a measured explanation for the doubling.

OpenAI also said 92% of Fortune 500 companies were using its products. That company-reported claim does not mean 92% had deployed ChatGPT across their workforces, bought enterprise seats, or demonstrated productivity gains. In the same period, Reuters reported OpenAI had more than 1 million paying users across its Enterprise, Team, and Edu products. These are distinct claims and should not be added to the consumer user count without knowing how the populations overlap. Reuters’ report on OpenAI’s paid business-product users provides that separate context.
What the milestone meant for OpenAI’s business
More than 200 million weekly users showed that ChatGPT had become a large distribution channel. That audience could create opportunities to sell consumer subscriptions, business plans, education offerings, and API access. But the user total alone cannot show how much revenue the audience generated or whether the business was profitable.

Estimating revenue from the 200-million figure would require information the announcement did not provide: the number of paying customers at the time, plan mix and regional pricing, API revenue, churn, usage intensity, overlap between business and consumer accounts, and the cost of serving requests. A free user and a paid subscriber are not equivalent from a business perspective, and neither number by itself captures infrastructure costs.

OpenAI later disclosed substantially larger weekly-user figures. These are subsequent company statements, not independent verification of the 2024 count or a guaranteed like-for-like series. Differences in product scope or counting methods could affect comparisons.

| OpenAI disclosure | Reported weekly-user figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| August 2024 | More than 200 million weekly active users | Reuters report citing OpenAI |
| August 2025 | Nearly 700 million weekly ChatGPT users | OpenAI |
| December 2025 | More than 800 million weekly users | OpenAI |
| February 2026 | More than 900 million weekly active users; also more than 50 million consumer subscribers and more than 9 million paying business users | OpenAI |
The later subscriber and business-user figures illustrate why reach and revenue-related measures should be kept separate. They do not reveal what share of the 2024 weekly audience paid, and the different dates and categories do not support a simple conversion-rate calculation.
Why competitor comparisons are difficult
ChatGPT competes with products including Google Gemini, Anthropic Claude, Microsoft Copilot, Meta AI, Perplexity, Grok, and open-source or locally run models. A headline ranking is unreliable unless the figures use the same definition and period. One company may report weekly active users, another monthly app users, web visits, paid subscribers, enterprise seats, or API customers. Those measures describe different things.
What the figure cannot prove
- Independent verification: The 200-million number was supplied by OpenAI; the announcement did not establish an outside audit.
- Engagement or retention: A weekly count does not show how often people used ChatGPT, how long they stayed, or whether they returned over months.
- Monetization or profitability: The figure does not identify paying users, revenue per user, or the costs of running the service.
- Reliability or safety: Popularity does not resolve concerns about inaccurate answers, privacy, security, copyright, or appropriate use in education and work.
- One person per user: The public figure did not explain whether accounts were deduplicated across people or devices.
For readers weighing the business significance, the milestone is evidence of extraordinary reported reach. It is not, on its own, evidence of durable retention, successful monetization, or a product advantage over competitors.
