OpenAI announced on March 9, 2026, that it had agreed to acquire Promptfoo, an open-source platform for testing and red-teaming AI applications. The announcement describes a planned integration with OpenAI Frontier, the company’s enterprise platform for building and operating AI “coworkers.” It does not disclose a purchase price or establish that the transaction has closed. Until a closing announcement appears, “agreed to acquire” is the accurate description.

What Promptfoo does
Promptfoo is an open-source command-line tool and software library for evaluating large-language-model applications. It lets developers compare prompts and models, test output quality and safety, generate adversarial inputs, and run checks locally or in CI/CD pipelines. Its documentation covers prompt and model evaluations, retrieval-augmented-generation testing, automated red teaming, security and privacy checks, compliance policies, vulnerability scans, and testing through HTTP, browsers, Python, JavaScript, direct model APIs, and agent workflows.
Recommended Free Tools
The project supports providers including OpenAI, Anthropic, Azure, Google, Hugging Face, local models, and custom APIs, according to its documentation. Promptfoo describes 157 red-team plugins across six categories in its current plugin documentation; that count can change as the project evolves.
#1 Best Overall
Threats it can test
- Prompt injection and jailbreaks
- RAG or context poisoning
- Excessive agency and unsafe tool use
- Overreliance, hallucination, and hijacking
- PII leakage and privacy failures
- Harmful or biased content
- Content-filter behavior
- Broken authorization and other application-level weaknesses
This is primarily a testing and evaluation layer. It can expose weaknesses, create attack cases, and support remediation; it is not a guarantee that an application will resist every attack in production. Runtime access controls, least-privilege permissions, secrets management, data-flow controls, and human approvals remain separate requirements.
Why OpenAI wants it in Frontier
Chatbots mainly return text. Enterprise agents may retrieve confidential records, call APIs, browse the web, send messages, edit systems, or complete multi-step workflows. Those capabilities create a larger attack surface involving the model, prompts, retrieval, memory, tools, identity, permissions, and business logic.
OpenAI says Promptfoo brings engineering expertise in evaluating, securing, and testing AI systems at enterprise scale. The planned Frontier integration is expected to add automated security testing, red teaming, evaluation, reporting, traceability, and compliance-related functions. The product logic is straightforward: enterprises need tests earlier in development and continuously after deployment, not only a one-time review before launch.

Owning the testing layer could also make Frontier more complete and reduce OpenAI’s dependence on an outside security supplier. That is an inference about strategy, not a motive OpenAI explicitly announced.
What remains unknown about Frontier integration
- Whether Promptfoo will keep a separate product and brand
- Whether the transaction will close, and on what date
- Whether Frontier customers will receive the features in every plan or only selected tiers
- Whether customers can test non-OpenAI models and external agents
- Whether testing will cover tools, permissions, retrieval, memory, browser actions, and business logic as well as model behavior
- Whether interfaces will include an API, CLI, dashboard, and CI/CD integrations
- How prompts, traces, credentials, test outputs, retention, and residency will be handled
- Whether self-hosted deployments will remain available
Nothing in the announcement supports saying that Promptfoo is already integrated into Frontier or that the acquisition makes Frontier secure.
Open-source commitments—and the questions behind them
Promptfoo says the project will remain open source, that it will continue serving existing users and customers, and that OpenAI will continue improving the project. Those are company commitments, not proof that governance, licensing, or product policy will never change.

Users should watch the repository’s license history, maintainer structure, release cadence, provider support, and deprecation notices. “Open source” also does not necessarily mean that hosted dashboards, monitoring, collaboration, support, or large-scale scanning will remain free or independent.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPromptfoo’s FAQ says the tool is local-first, while some optional hosted features—such as hosted generation or grading, target setup, sharing, reports, telemetry, and account or license checks—may transmit data to Promptfoo-operated services. After an OpenAI acquisition, security teams should obtain specific answers about data access, retention, training use, encryption, deletion, and geographic processing.
What the deal could mean financially
SecurityWeek, citing PitchBook data, reported that Promptfoo had raised more than $23 million and was valued at approximately $86 million after an $18.4 million Series A in July 2025. Those are secondary-source and third-party figures, not terms disclosed by OpenAI or Promptfoo. They do not establish the acquisition price: a transaction can be higher, lower, paid partly in stock, or structured with undisclosed conditions.

Promptfoo said more than 350,000 developers had used its software, 130,000 were active monthly, and teams at more than 25% of Fortune 500 companies relied on it. These are Promptfoo’s claims and should not be treated as independently audited measurements.
Practical impact on current users
Developers
The open-source CLI remains relevant for local evaluations, regression tests, CI/CD checks, and multi-provider comparisons. A current red-team setup documented by Promptfoo is:

The quickstart lists Node.js ^20.20.0 or >=22.22.0; verify that requirement before installing because it can change. Promptfoo warns that adversarial tests may generate harmful inputs or outputs. Run them only against systems you own or are authorized to assess. See the red-team quickstart and command-line guidance.

The pricing page viewed on August 16, 2026 listed the following; recheck it before making a purchase because terms can change:
| Offering | Listed features | Commercial signal |
|---|---|---|
| Community | Open source, local execution or self-hosting, core evaluations and vulnerability scanning, up to 10,000 red-team probes per month | Free |
| Enterprise | Higher limits, collaboration, continuous monitoring, dashboards, SSO, API access, managed cloud deployment, priority support, and service-level guarantees | Customized pricing |
| On-Premise | Deployment for organizations requiring infrastructure control | Customized pricing |
See Promptfoo’s pricing page for current terms. A probe allowance is a quota, not unlimited testing, and dynamically generated attacks can consume model and API budgets.

OpenAI ownership may improve integration with Frontier while creating a neutrality concern. A security team comparing OpenAI with competing models may prefer an evaluator that is not owned by one of the vendors being tested. Buyers should ask whether evaluations are reproducible, whether non-OpenAI providers remain first-class integrations, and whether results can be exported to existing security, governance, risk, and compliance systems.
Promptfoo should also be compared with tools that solve different parts of the problem. NVIDIA Garak is an open-source, model-focused vulnerability scanner. Giskard emphasizes AI testing and governance. DeepEval targets developer-oriented evaluation. LangSmith combines tracing, observability, and evaluation. Lakera focuses more on runtime prompt-injection defense and guardrails, while Robust Intelligence and Arthur provide broader enterprise security, monitoring, or governance capabilities. Their current features and pricing should be verified directly.
Buyer checklist
- Does testing cover tools, permissions, retrieval, memory, browser actions, APIs, and business workflows—not just prompts?
- Can tests run locally, in private networks, self-hosted, and in CI/CD?
- Can the evaluator test multiple model providers independently?
- Are findings tied to model version, prompt version, dataset, tool call, user, and code commit?
- Can security teams inspect evidence and control false positives and false negatives?
- What data leaves the environment, for how long, and under what deletion and residency policies?
- Are quotas, API access, SSO, support, and monitoring included or separately priced?
- Does the product help reproduce and retest fixes, rather than only produce a score?
The Bottom Line
OpenAI’s Promptfoo transaction is a strategic signal, not a completed acquisition or a promise of automatic AI security. The announced plan puts open-source evaluation and red teaming closer to Frontier’s enterprise-agent workflow, while leaving price, closing, governance, neutrality, and data-handling questions unresolved. Treat Promptfoo as a testing component to evaluate—not as a substitute for runtime controls or independent security assurance.
