Bloomberg and Reuters reporting said the financing valued the Nigeria-centered fintech at approximately $2 billion. The figure was a private-market transaction valuation—not a public-market capitalization, audited valuation or confirmed measure of what OPay is worth today.

Why SoftBank’s investment mattered
The financing was described as SoftBank Vision Fund 2’s first publicly reported investment in an African startup. That gave OPay a high-profile global growth investor while international capital was moving into African financial technology. SoftBank’s stated rationale centered on helping OPay extend its model into Egypt and other regional markets.

- Use the, easy-to-use, and customizable POS to get started.
That backing did not mean OPay had already built a uniformly scaled pan-African operation. Nigeria was its principal market, Egypt was a clear expansion market, and reported efforts involving Kenya and South Africa had not progressed as planned. Expansion ambitions should therefore be distinguished from demonstrated operating reach.
How OPay’s business worked
OPay entered Nigeria in 2018 with a broad “super app” ambition spanning mobility, logistics, commerce and payments. Over time, payments and mobile-money services became the central growth engine. OPay’s current materials describe a Nigeria-focused platform for consumers, agents and merchants, including the following products:
- Consumer accounts, wallets and bank transfers
- Bill payments and cards
- Agent-assisted cash deposits and withdrawals
- Point-of-sale terminals for agents and merchants
- Merchant acquiring, collections and settlement tools
- Savings-related financial products
OPay’s company description, service-level agreement and service catalog state that its Nigerian business operates through Central Bank of Nigeria-licensed entities and makes claims about NDIC insurance. Those are company statements; they should not be treated as an independent regulatory finding without checking CBN or NDIC records directly.
Why agents and POS terminals were important
Nigeria’s cash-heavy economy creates a distribution problem that a smartphone-only app cannot solve. Agents and POS operators provide physical points for cash-in and cash-out, transfers and bill payments, connecting customers to digital accounts. The model can reach people who are underbanked or who need reliable access to cash, but it also requires liquidity management, fraud controls, reconciliation, uptime and customer support.

The numbers behind the valuation
Earlier financing
Contemporary reports cited a $50 million round in June 2019 and a $120 million Series B in November 2019. That implied roughly $170 million raised before the 2021 financing and approximately $570 million cumulatively afterward, according to the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission and other coverage.
Transaction volume is not revenue
TechCrunch, citing Opera, OPay’s then-parent company, reported that monthly transaction value had grown 4.5 times to more than $2 billion in December 2020. Bloomberg reported monthly volume above $3 billion around the financing. Those figures may reflect different periods, definitions or methodologies.
Transaction volume is the value moving through a platform. It is not revenue, profit, customer balances or valuation. The reviewed coverage does not provide audited revenue, earnings, take rates, customer-acquisition costs or unit economics, so the reported volume cannot by itself establish profitability.

Why Nigeria was attractive
Nigeria combines a large population, substantial demand for accessible financial services and a payments market where banks, telecom-linked mobile-money businesses and fintechs compete. Agent distribution allows a provider to serve cash-based transactions while building digital usage.
OPay claimed it handled approximately 80% of bank transfers among mobile-money operators in Nigeria and 20% of non-merchant POS transactions at the time. These are OPay’s claims, reported by TechCrunch, not independently verified market-share measurements.
For broader period context, the GSMA reported more than 160 million active mobile-money users in sub-Saharan Africa and about $495 billion in mobile-money transaction value in 2020. Those are 2020 regional figures, not current 2026 statistics; see The Mobile Economy Sub-Saharan Africa 2021.

The super-app strategy—and its limits
Earlier OPay experiments included ORide, OBus, OExpress, OTrade and OFood. Coverage in 2021 described several non-financial verticals as discontinued or unable to scale materially, with the COVID-19 pandemic contributing to setbacks in some markets. The lesson for investors was not that every service had succeeded, but that payments offered the strongest repeatable foundation.

- Pay one transparent rate per swipe for Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express.
- Works in conjunction with most downloadable Square point-of-sale apps on your device. Customers can pay, tip and sign directly on your device. Track payments in cash, gift cards and more. Also lets you send receipts via e-mail or text message, makes it easy to apply discounts, keeps a data and sales history log and more.
- Accepts magstripe credit card payments, including those from Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express (fees apply).
- App sends deposits to your bank account within 1 to 2 business days, or enjoy instant deposits (fees apply).
A focused payments strategy can deepen usage through transfers, bills, cards, merchant services and cash infrastructure. It also avoids assuming that mobility, delivery or commerce businesses have the same economics or regulatory requirements as financial services.
What SoftBank was betting on
- Digitizing transactions in a large, partly cash-based market
- Using agents and POS terminals as a physical distribution network
- Monetizing payment activity through adjacent financial products
- Replicating the model in Egypt and potentially other emerging markets
- Building financial infrastructure rather than only a consumer app
Every part of that thesis carried execution risk. A model that works in Nigeria must be adapted to each country’s licensing, know-your-customer rules, banking partnerships, currency, settlement systems, consumer behavior and competitors. Regional expansion was a strategy, not proof of continent-wide scale.

Scale versus profitability
High payment volume can coexist with thin margins. Without disclosed take rates, incentives, agent costs and operating expenses, the 2021 financing does not show whether OPay had durable, profitable unit economics.
Agent and platform risk
- Maintaining enough cash liquidity at agent locations
- Detecting fraud and monitoring agent conduct
- Keeping networks available and reconciling settlements
- Meeting licensing, consumer-protection and compliance obligations
- Providing support when transactions fail or cash is unavailable
Valuation risk
A private financing valuation depends on the negotiated terms of one transaction. It does not establish a current market price, and the reviewed sources do not establish a newer independently reported valuation as of August 2026.

How the deal compared with African technology funding in 2021
The OPay round arrived during an unusually strong year for African technology finance. Contemporary reporting cited these other financings:
| Company | Reported 2021 financing | Reported valuation |
|---|---|---|
| Flutterwave | $170 million | $1 billion |
| Wave | $200 million | $1.7 billion |
| Chipper Cash | $100 million | $2 billion |
| Andela | $200 million | $1.5 billion |
These comparisons describe the 2021 funding environment only. They are not evidence of current relative valuations. See TechCrunch’s 2021 funding retrospective.
What the 2021 milestone means in hindsight
The lasting significance of the transaction is the investor thesis it captured: a Nigeria-centered fintech could combine digital wallets, bank transfers, agents, POS infrastructure and merchant services into a broader financial platform. OPay’s current Nigerian product materials show that this payments-and-services focus remains visible in its offering.

What the deal does not establish is that OPay is worth $2 billion today, that it is profitable, or that it achieved a uniformly scaled African footprint. The defensible conclusion is narrower: on August 23, 2021, investors supplied $400 million in a SoftBank Vision Fund 2-led Series C at a reported private valuation of about $2 billion, betting that OPay could turn Nigerian payments scale into durable regional financial infrastructure.
