Then rehearse the specific format—live video, prerecorded prompts, or an AI-led interview—because timing, retakes, and platform controls vary. Follow the employer’s instructions if they differ from general advice.
How do I prepare for an online job interview?
- Confirm the details. Check the date, time zone, platform, interview format, interviewer contact details, and any instructions from the recruiter. Find out whether you will answer live, record responses, or complete another task.
- Connect the job requirements to your experience. Review the job description, your application, and the organization’s website. For each important requirement, choose a specific example from work, education, or volunteering that shows what you did and what happened.
- Prepare answer outlines, not a script. A simple structure such as situation, task, action, and result (STAR) can help keep an example clear. Keep notes brief; reading a memorized answer can sound stiff and make it harder to respond to follow-up questions.
- Prepare questions for the interviewer. Ask about responsibilities, how success is measured, training, the team’s priorities, or what a typical day involves. Choose questions that will help you decide whether the role fits you.
- Test the setup you plan to use. Check the software, camera, microphone, internet connection, device power, and any controls you may need, such as mute or screen sharing. Keep the recruiter’s contact details or another agreed way to reach them nearby.
- Make the space interview-ready. Use a quiet, uncluttered place with good light. Put the camera near eye level and silence notifications. A computer or laptop is a common choice; a phone or tablet may work if the platform and employer allow it.
- Rehearse under realistic conditions. Answer likely questions aloud using the same device and, if possible, the same software. A timed recording can help you notice whether you speak clearly, stay on topic, and look toward the camera naturally.
There is no single correct amount of early sign-in time. The UK National Careers Service advises logging in at least half an hour ahead for checks, while CareerOneStop’s general interview guidance says to be ready 10–15 minutes early. Use the employer’s directions and allow enough time for your own setup; do not treat either buffer as a universal rule. See the National Careers Service video interview tips and CareerOneStop interview guidance.
How can I practice for a video interview?
Practice actual answers aloud rather than only thinking through what you might say. Priya Rathod, workplace trends editor at Indeed, told the Associated Press: “You need to practice out loud.” Ask a friend to run a mock interview, or record a practice session and review it yourself.
Use feedback to check whether your answer addresses the question, includes a concrete example, and is easy to follow. Notice your pace, volume, posture, and whether you look toward the camera when making a point. Aim for a natural conversation, not a performance without pauses.

If you use a mock interview or online practice resource, choose one that resembles your interview format and uses questions relevant to the role. Consider whether it provides useful feedback, lets you practice with your actual device, and meets your cost, accessibility, and privacy needs. In the United States, CareerOneStop says free mock interviews may be available through American Job Centers. In the UK, the National Careers Service points to career advisers. Availability and eligibility depend on location; check with the relevant service.

What should I wear or have ready for a virtual interview?
Follow any dress guidance from the employer. If none is given, choose clothing suitable for the role and a professional conversation. More important than buying new equipment is checking that what you already have works: confirm that your face is visible, your voice is clear, and the background is not distracting.
- Keep your resume or a few brief notes within reach, but avoid reading them aloud.
- Have water nearby if useful, and silence notifications on devices in the room.
- Use headphones if they improve your audio; a lamp can help if natural light is poor. These are optional aids, not requirements.
- Check platform requirements before deciding whether you need a different device or any new equipment.
How do I prepare for a one-way video interview?
A prerecorded, or one-way, interview usually asks you to record answers to prompts for the employer to review later. The platform or employer may set an answer window or rules about stopping and rerecording; neither feature is guaranteed. Read the instructions before starting so you know how much time you have and what controls are available.

Practice with a timer and give a direct answer supported by a relevant example. During the interview, read each prompt carefully, take a brief moment to organize your thoughts, and follow the stated timing and retake rules. Do not assume you can restart an answer unless the instructions say so.
How do I answer questions in an AI job interview?
AI-led interviews differ by platform and employer, so there is no established universal scoring method or interface. Practice explaining your experience aloud in clear, specific language, and pay attention to the prompt and any time limit. A practice simulator cannot be assumed to predict how an employer’s system will assess you.
If the interview is timed, rehearse concise answers that include the detail needed to make your example understandable. Avoid trying to guess hidden scoring rules; answer the question honestly and follow the platform’s instructions.
What should I do during a live video interview?
- Listen to the full question, pause briefly, and then answer with a relevant example.
- If a question is unclear, ask the interviewer to clarify it.
- Look toward the camera when making an important point, while keeping the exchange natural.
- If a technical issue occurs, tell the interviewer and ask for a moment to resolve it. If you remain connected, CareerOneStop advises muting audio and video while you address the problem.
What should I do after the interview?
Write down two or three things that went well and two or three you would change next time while the conversation is fresh. CareerOneStop recommends sending a brief thank-you message within 24 hours. If you send one, refer to something specific from the conversation, reiterate your interest if appropriate, and provide any materials you promised.
