Demanding nude photos as loan collateral is a documented form of coercive lending, but the clearest example in the available sources describes events in China in 2016—not a verified current worldwide trend. If a lender demands intimate images, threatens to share them, or uses an app to access personal data, treat the conduct as a serious safety and fraud risk. The details and reporting options depend on your location.
Do loan apps ask for nude photos as collateral?
There is a documented historical example. The Foundation for Media Alternatives’ 2021 report describes “loans for nude scams” in China in 2016: lending entities demanded nude photos from female college students as collateral and threatened to release the images if borrowers did not repay. That account establishes a past practice in a specific setting; it does not show how common the practice is now or whether it is widespread elsewhere. Other coercive lending practices can involve different conduct. A 2021 scholarly study of online lending cases in Vietnam reports that some apps required access to contacts, pictures, videos, and other phone information. That can expose borrowers to privacy abuse or pressure, but app access is not the same as demanding nude images as collateral. Likewise, an image-based extortion threat and a demand for advance fees to release a loan are distinct tactics. “Loan shark” is often used informally for predatory or unlicensed lenders; its legal meaning varies by jurisdiction. Check the rules and lender register where you live rather than assuming the term identifies a specific legal status.

How to check whether an online lender is legitimate
Use the relevant financial regulator’s official register and verify the lender’s name and contact details independently. Do not rely on a link or phone number supplied in an unsolicited message. Check whether local law requires lenders to be licensed and whether the lender follows the required identity-verification process.

- An unsolicited loan offer, including one sent by text or through social media.
- Approval conducted remotely without in-person identity verification at an approved business place.
- A demand for an advance fee before the loan is released.
These indicators describe Singapore’s rules and warnings; they are not a universal legal test. A lender may legitimately need an identity document or an ordinary identity-verification photo. What to do if a lender threatens to share your photos
- Do not pay in an attempt to make the threat disappear. Payment does not guarantee the images will be deleted, and extortion may continue. - Stop communicating with the extorter. Avoid arguing, negotiating, or sending more images or personal information.
- Preserve evidence before blocking or deleting anything. Save screenshots of messages, account names, phone numbers, payment instructions, loan terms, and transaction records. Keep original files and note dates and times where possible.
- Report the threat to local police and the appropriate platform. Use official contact details found independently, not those provided by the lender. Reporting channels and legal protections differ by country.
- Tell someone you trust. Image-based threats can be frightening and isolating; you do not have to manage the situation alone. The lender’s threats are the lender’s conduct, not your fault.
What to do if a suspicious loan app accessed your phone
If you installed an app and suspect it accessed contacts, photos, messages, or financial information, use a different, trusted device to check sensitive accounts. Follow current advice from your country’s police, cyber-safety agency, and financial institutions. Contact your bank through a verified number or app if you see unauthorized activity, and report the suspected compromise to the appropriate authorities. Do not assume that uninstalling an app alone reverses data access or stops threats. Prioritize securing accounts and getting advice from verified local channels; avoid paying anyone who promises guaranteed deletion or recovery.

Police statistics on broader loan scams should not be treated as counts of nude-photo collateral cases. For example, Singapore Police Force advisories reported at least 375 loan-scam cases and at least S$2.4 million in losses from January through May 2025, and at least nine victims with at least S$18,000 in losses in a malicious-app loan-scam variant between July 1 and August 13, 2023.
