Company officers said an account they believed held about $11 million had a balance of $0.37. Former CEO Alex Beckman disputed the company’s account of events. The reported discrepancy and allegations remain contested; they were not established as findings by a court or independent audit in the reporting available here.
What happened at On
On built conversational AI tools for businesses in retail, sports, media and entertainment. Founded as GameOn Technology in 2014, the company later operated under the name On. In July 2024, a dispute over company finances unfolded alongside Beckman’s departure and a shutdown of most operations.
Timeline of the resignation and layoffs
| Date | What was reported |
|---|---|
| July 1, 2024 | A shareholder letter reproduced by GamesBeat said Beckman resigned as CEO and board member under pressure from the board. Beckman said the decision was his alone and disputed the company’s description. |
| July 5, 2024 | Company officers said they investigated company bank accounts and found that an account they believed held about $11 million had a balance of $0.37. |
| July 8, 2024 | Officers said On paused operations and laid off nearly all staff after meetings over the weekend. GamesBeat estimated the affected workforce at about 60 people. |
The dates and claims in this timeline come from the company officers’ statements and Beckman’s response as reported by GamesBeat, not from a judicial finding.
What the $11 million figure does—and does not—mean
The officers’ account described a discrepancy between the balance they expected in a particular account and the balance they said they found. It does not establish that $11 million was stolen, that Beckman personally took money, or that the amount was available in company cash at the time of the shutdown.
#1 Best Overall
GamesBeat also reported two other figures that refer to different things: officers said the company had about $550,000 in cash when it decided to pause operations, much of which went to termination costs; the company had previously reported raising $35.5 million over its lifetime, a total Beckman confirmed to the outlet. Fundraising over several years is not the same as cash remaining in July 2024.
What each side said
Company officers’ account
In a shareholder letter, officers alleged that Beckman had made false financial and operating representations. They said they faced problems obtaining account access and supporting records, and described the account balance they said they found. The letter stated: “This cash was critical to the ongoing operations of the company in which you invested.” These are the officers’ allegations and account of the events.
Beckman’s response
Beckman disputed the company’s characterization of his resignation and said its communication contained exaggerations and misstatements. He described the situation as more complicated and denied personally benefiting from purported financial improprieties. He also said he would provide his full account at an appropriate time.

GamesBeat’s July 16, 2024 report, updated June 18, 2025, reproduces the officers’ letter and Beckman’s response. It reports the competing accounts but does not resolve them. The reporting does not establish an independent audit finding, a court judgment, criminal charges, later litigation, or the company’s eventual legal or operating status. Readers should treat the $11 million discrepancy and related accusations as reported claims, not proven misconduct.
