The company said its policies were incorrectly applied; reports later that August said the customer intended to continue his complaint at VCAT, but the available reporting does not establish what happened to that matter.
What was reported at the Elsternwick store
PerthNow reported on 1 August 2024 that a customer had asked an employee at the Officeworks Elsternwick store in Melbourne to laminate a page from the Australian Jewish News. The page reportedly showed Australian and Israeli flags and carried the title “The Indomitable Spirit of Our People.”
In PerthNow’s account of the recorded exchange, the employee said she was “pro-Palestine” and uncomfortable for political reasons. The report says she later told the customer she would have to ask him to leave after discovering he was recording. What Officeworks said
In a media statement dated 1 August 2024, Officeworks said it was disappointed the customer had not had an enjoyable shopping experience, had investigated internally and taken appropriate action, and was providing ongoing training and education, including through the Melbourne Holocaust Museum. The company also said its policies do not discriminate against customers on the basis of political views, religious beliefs, gender, sexuality or race. Officeworks’ statement

The company’s clearest account of the service decision was: “In this particular incident, our policies were incorrectly applied and in accordance with our Officeworks’ policies, the laminating should have taken place.” Officeworks Managing Director Sarah Hunter also apologized publicly, as reported by PerthNow; the formal company statement is the source for Officeworks’ policy position.
What is known about the customer’s complaint
The Australian Jewish News reported on 3 August 2024 that the customer rejected the apology and said he would continue action at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT). Office Products News reported on 14 August that he was still proceeding. Those reports establish his stated intention at the time, not the result of a tribunal case. The available reporting does not establish a later filing disposition, settlement, hearing or VCAT decision. It would therefore be inaccurate to say that a tribunal found discrimination, upheld a complaint or dismissed one.

For this incident, the established company position is narrower and direct: Officeworks said its policies should have allowed the requested laminating service and that they were applied incorrectly. That is the company’s statement about its own policies, not a legal finding.
