October 2026 Corn Stocks: USDA WASDE Report Is Still Pending

The October 2026 WASDE had not been released as of October 8. September’s report cut new-crop corn ending stocks, while September 1 stocks came in above expectations—setting up the carry-in question for October.

The claim that USDA reduced old-crop corn ending stocks and set new-crop stocks below expectations is not yet confirmed. As of October 8, 2026, the October World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) report was scheduled for October 9 at noon Eastern, and the latest released report was September’s. The published data show what markets knew going into October—and what to check when USDA releases the new figures.

What is confirmed before the October WASDE

USDA’s report calendar scheduled the October 2026 WASDE for October 9 at 12:00 p.m. ET. The October report had not been released as of October 8, so neither its old-crop ending-stocks revision nor a new-crop estimate below market expectations can be reported as fact. USDA’s WASDE schedule is the primary source for the release date.

The most recent published balance sheet was September’s. It showed lower 2026/27 production and ending stocks than the previous month, while a separate September 30 Grain Stocks report showed more old-crop corn on hand than traders had expected. Those figures set up the October question: how much of the larger carry-in would be offset by changes to the new crop’s yield, use, or other balance-sheet entries?

What September’s corn balance sheet said

New crop: lower production and ending stocks

Successful Farming’s account of the September 2026 WASDE says USDA reduced its 2026/27 corn production forecast by 213 million bushels from the previous month, to 15.8 billion bushels. The change reflected a 2.2-bushel-per-acre reduction in expected yield, to 178.5 bushels per acre, along with a small reduction in harvested area. USDA also lowered projected total use by 150 million bushels, to 16.2 billion, reducing feed and residual use while leaving exports at 3.3 billion. Ending stocks fell 86 million bushels to approximately 1.6 billion. Successful Farming’s September WASDE report quotes USDA’s summary: “This month’s 2026/2027 U.S. corn outlook is for smaller supplies, lower domestic use, unchanged exports, and reduced ending stocks.”

For a more precise September ending-stocks comparison, AGSIST records USDA’s 2026/27 estimate at 1.567 billion bushels, against a 1.533-billion-bushel trade average. That is 34 million bushels above the survey average—not below expectations—even though USDA had lowered the estimate from August. The trade average came from a Dow Jones survey via DTN; AGSIST notes that no survey high or low was on file for this figure. AGSIST’s September 2026 WASDE comparison provides that benchmark.

Old crop: September 1 stocks were unexpectedly large

USDA reported 2.095 billion bushels of corn stocks on September 1, 2026. That was well above trade expectations near 1.924 billion bushels and the September WASDE estimate of 1.922 billion. Successful Farming also reported that USDA lowered its estimate of 2025 corn production by 57 million bushels. The September WASDE’s exact old-crop ending-stocks figure is not established in the cited reporting, so the September 1 stocks number should not be mistaken for that ending-stocks figure.

The stocks result was 35% above a year earlier and a seven-year high, according to the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture. Scott Stiles, an agricultural economics program associate there, explained the carry-in connection: “The significance here is the 2.095 billion bushels will become the adjusted 2026/27 beginning stocks in the upcoming October WASDE.” The University of Arkansas Extension analysis describes both the stocks figure and its potential balance-sheet significance.

Why old-crop stocks can change the new-crop outlook

Ending stocks are the corn left over at the end of a crop year. Those stocks become beginning stocks for the next crop year, so a larger old-crop carry-in can increase the next year’s available supply before new production is counted. In pre-report analysis, Grain Market Insider estimated that the Grain Stocks and production revisions could add roughly 173 million bushels to 2026/27 beginning stocks. That was an analyst’s implication ahead of the October report, not USDA’s final October estimate. A lower new-crop yield or higher use could offset some or all of the added carry-in.

Seed Needs Peaches and Cream Corn Seeds 230 Seeds 1.5 Ounce Bulk Pack
  • Hybrid Variety: Peaches & Cream Sweet Corn is a hybrid, sugary-enhanced (SE) bicolor variety known for its combination of yellow and white kernels, offering a dual flavor experience in each bite.
  • Early Maturity: This corn variety matures relatively early, with some sources indicating a harvest time around 80 to 90 days after planting, making it suitable for regions with shorter growing seasons.
  • Planting Tips: For optimal pollination and yield, plant in blocks rather than single rows, ensuring at least four rows for proper cross-pollination. Seeds should be planted when soil temperatures reach 60°F or above for good germination.
  • Flavor and Texture: Noted for its sweetness and tenderness, Peaches & Cream corn is praised for its fine texture and rich flavor, which can be enjoyed fresh, frozen, or cooked, making it versatile for various culinary uses.
  • Quality: All Sweet Corn seeds packaged by Seed Needs are intended for the current and the following growing seasons. All seeds are stored in a temperature controlled facility that is free of significant amounts of moisture.

The balance-sheet arithmetic is why “lower than expected” needs a clear reference point. USDA can lower ending stocks month over month while still estimating more stocks than traders anticipated. September illustrated that distinction: the estimate was cut from the prior month, but AGSIST’s reported September figure remained above the Dow Jones/DTN trade average.

What analysts were watching for in October

  • Yield and production: Successful Farming’s October 5 preview said early harvest results could lead USDA to lower its yield estimate. The size of any adjustment would influence whether higher beginning stocks carried through to higher ending stocks.
  • Exports: The preview reported 2026/27 export commitments at 23% of USDA’s forecast, versus a five-year average of 31% at that point in the year. Its analysis saw little basis then for raising the export forecast; this was an analyst view, not a USDA change.
  • Ethanol demand: The same preview expected ethanol demand to remain near unchanged. That, too, was an expectation rather than a published USDA revision.

These were pre-report considerations, not outcomes. The October WASDE is needed to establish what USDA actually changed and whether the final numbers were above or below a specified trade forecast. The October 5 preview is available from Successful Farming.

How to read the October numbers when released

  1. Separate the crop years. Identify old crop as 2025/26 and new crop as 2026/27; do not treat September 1 stocks as the same measure as crop-year ending stocks.
  2. Compare USDA month over month. Check October’s estimate against September’s published WASDE estimate. For 2026/27 ending stocks, September’s figure was 1.567 billion bushels in AGSIST’s record.
  3. Compare USDA with a named market benchmark. Look for the survey source, its estimate and, if reported, its range and survey date. “Below expectations” means below that forecast, not merely below the prior month’s USDA number.
  4. Trace the balance-sheet changes. Check beginning stocks, production, feed and residual use, exports, other uses and ending stocks. This shows whether a stocks revision came from supply, demand, or both.
  5. Keep units and timing attached to figures. Distinguish bushels from millions or billions of bushels, and yield in bushels per acre. Tie any market reaction to the dated contract and trading session rather than treating it as a current price.

For context only, December 2026 corn futures fell 21¼ cents after the September 30 Grain Stocks report and closed at $5.00¾, according to Stiles at the University of Arkansas. That is a dated reaction to the September report, not a current quote or evidence of how futures responded to October’s WASDE.
