Oath Surgical announced its launch in May 2025 with more than $10 million in funding, a software platform called OathOS, and a plan to deliver outpatient surgery through its own centers. The Portland-based company is both a care provider and a technology business; its claims about lower costs and improved care should be distinguished from independently verified results.
What is Oath Surgical?
Oath Surgical is a Portland-based surgical-care startup that combines outpatient surgical centers with proprietary software. Founder and CEO Dr. Oliver Keown led the company at launch. MassDevice described him as the former head of Intuitive Ventures, while GeekWire characterized him as a longtime doctor and healthcare investor.
The company announced OathOS alongside its emergence from stealth. Launch coverage described the software as supporting referrals, AI-assisted charting and an AI scribe, operational and cost information, surgical-performance metrics, and automated follow-up during recovery. Those descriptions outline the platform’s intended scope; they do not establish that it improves outcomes or lowers costs.
How much funding did Oath Surgical raise?
Oath announced more than $10 million in funding in May 2025. GeekWire reported the announcement on May 16, and MassDevice reported it on May 15. Although Keown described the financing as a $10 million seed round in his launch post, the two news reports used “more than $10 million”; that is the more precise wording for the amount reported in coverage. Named investors included Oxford Science Enterprises, Black Opal Ventures, Rogue VC, Tau Ventures, and First Spark Ventures.

Where does Oath operate, and what care does it offer?
At launch, Oath had acquired two surgical centers in Portland and had a third center in development. Launch coverage named general surgery, gynecology, gastroenterology, urology, ear, nose and throat (ENT), and orthopedics among the specialties. The company describes its services as outpatient surgery across a range of specialties.
Oath’s current site lists West Portland and Central Portland locations, as well as locations in Oregon and Arizona that may be marked as coming soon. Site listings and opening status can change, so check Oath’s locations and services information for current details before relying on a particular location or specialty being available.

What has Oath said about cost and capacity?
MassDevice reported Oath’s estimate that its approach could make procedures cost up to 40% less than hospital-based procedures. That is a company estimate reported in 2025, not an independently verified comparative result in the cited coverage. A meaningful comparison would need to account for the procedure, insurance coverage, and the total cost of the care episode.
MassDevice also reported projected capacity of thousands of procedures annually at full capacity for the first sites. This is a capacity projection, not evidence of the number of procedures Oath has performed.

In his 2025 launch post, Keown said Oath’s affiliated network reached more than 11 million covered lives through 25 affiliated ambulatory surgery centers and more than 125 surgeons. Those are founder-reported network figures, not independently confirmed patient volume or proof that all covered people can access Oath locations.
How does Oath work with health plans and surgeons?
Oath’s payor information presents outpatient surgery as a lower-cost option and describes surgical bundles, risk-sharing arrangements, and traditional fee-for-service payment. It addresses health plans, self-insured employers, and primary-care or value-based-care organizations, supporting a business-to-business partnership model rather than a direct-to-consumer referral program.

The company also recruits surgeons by promoting access to its facilities, technology, and peer network, and says ownership or equity may be optional. These are company recruitment claims. The available launch materials do not establish a consumer affiliate program.

The May 2025 announcement established that Oath planned to integrate surgical care centers and software, had acquired two Portland centers, and had raised more than $10 million according to launch coverage. It also put forward cost and capacity claims. The sources cited here do not independently validate Oath’s savings estimate, quality, clinical outcomes, or projected throughput. Those claims should not be treated as measured results without supporting comparative data.

Keown framed the company’s strategy this way: “Oath isn’t just layering technology on top of a broken system—we’re rebuilding from the ground up,” MassDevice reported. He also said OathOS would connect digital tools and surgical centers. These are the founder’s descriptions of the company’s approach, not independent findings.
