Gizmodo later reported the charge wording as “Disrupting traffic,” citing The City; that attribution is distinct from what police disclosed to AP.

Gizmodo’s Dec. 20 account described the people arrested as one driver and one Teamsters organizer. It gave “Disrupting traffic” as the charge wording, attributing that phrase to The City. The available accounts therefore support saying that the phrase was reported by Gizmodo via The City—not that NYPD publicly gave AP that reason.
Why the Teamsters were striking
The walkout was part of a dispute over union representation and bargaining. The Teamsters said Amazon had refused to negotiate with unionized workers. Amazon disputed the likely operational impact of the strike, and contemporaneous reporting described disagreement about drivers’ employment status and representation. Those were competing positions, not settled findings about the underlying labor dispute.

On Dec. 14, the Teamsters announced that workers at New York facilities JFK8 and DBK4 had voted to authorize strikes. The union said more than 5,500 JFK8 workers had affiliated with it that June and that DBK4 workers had voted nearly unanimously to authorize a strike. Those figures and descriptions came from the union.
On Dec. 19, the union said workers began striking at seven delivery hubs, including DBK4, while picketing additional facilities. It called the action the largest strike against Amazon in U.S. history. That is the Teamsters’ characterization; it should not be confused with an independently established count of strike participants.

What the reported numbers do—and do not—show
Figures published around the strike refer to different groups, so they cannot be used interchangeably as a measure of participation.
| Figure | What it describes | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Nearly 10,000 workers at 10 Amazon facilities | Workers the Teamsters said were involved in the union’s action | Teamsters claim reported by the Associated Press on Dec. 19, 2024; not an AP count of people who actually walked out. |
| Seven facilities | Locations where workers began striking on Dec. 19 | Associated Press report of the union-announced strike locations. |
| More than 5,500 JFK8 workers | Workers the Teamsters said had affiliated with the union in June 2024 | Teamsters statement of Dec. 14, 2024; a union claim about affiliation, not a turnout figure. |
| 800,000 workers | People employed in Amazon’s U.S. warehouses | Amazon figure reported by the Associated Press on Dec. 19, 2024; it does not describe drivers or strike participation. |
The Associated Press said the union had not disclosed how many workers would participate or how long the walkout would last. Amazon said it did not expect the strike to affect operations. The union’s description of the action as historic and the company’s assessment of its operational effect are different claims, not competing measurements of attendance.

What was filed in court
A federal docket listing records an emergency injunction motion and amended complaint filed Dec. 20, 2024, by Amazon Labor Union and Teamsters-related plaintiffs. The listing also records a transfer from the Southern District of New York to the Eastern District of New York on Dec. 30. Those are procedural entries; they do not establish that the complaint’s allegations were proven or what the case’s final outcome was.
As of the docket information reviewed through December 2024, a current final disposition is not established here. The filing should not be treated as a judicial finding about either the arrests or the labor dispute.
