NVIDIA said it discovered a cyber incident on February 23, 2022. Its later SEC filing says the attackers obtained network credentials and, through deception, two-factor authentication capability, then accessed company systems and stole proprietary information, including source code. NVIDIA said some material was leaked online. The public disclosures do not establish a complete inventory of stolen files or independently confirm the volume claimed by the attackers.

When was NVIDIA hacked?

NVIDIA’s security notice says the company became aware of the incident on February 23, 2022. Its fiscal 2022 Form 10-K later described the intrusion and response in more detail. This is a historical incident, not a current service-status notice.

What data did the attackers obtain?

NVIDIA’s Form 10-K says independent criminal threat actors obtained network credentials and, through deception, obtained two-factor authentication capability and access to NVIDIA’s network. The company said the attackers misappropriated proprietary information, including source code, and leaked some of it online.

Reuters reported that Lapsus$ claimed responsibility and that leaked material apparently included schematics, drivers, and firmware. NVIDIA’s filing does not name Lapsus$, so the group’s involvement is attributable to reporting rather than the company’s formal account.

  • A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis

TechCrunch reported Lapsus$’s claim that it stole 1 terabyte of data. That figure is an unverified claim by the group, not a volume confirmed by NVIDIA. The official disclosures and reporting cited here do not provide a complete inventory of files or a verified total amount of data taken.

How did NVIDIA respond?

NVIDIA said it hardened its network, rotated network credentials, analyzed the information that had been exfiltrated, and notified law enforcement and other authorities. Its March 1 notice also said all employees were required to change their passwords and that it had engaged incident-response experts.

In an update dated March 8, 2022, NVIDIA said two code-signing certificates reported leaked in the incident had expired. The company warned that criminals might include expired certificates in fraudulently signed malicious code. It advised customers to obtain software from trusted, legitimate NVIDIA sources and not to trust certificates beyond their expiration date.

Was NVIDIA hit by ransomware?

NVIDIA said it had no evidence that ransomware had been deployed in its environment. It also said it did not anticipate disruption to its business or customer service. Those statements reflect the company’s assessment and expectation at the time; they are not an independent finding about every later consequence.

What does the public record not establish?

  • The complete contents of all information taken or leaked.
  • An independently verified total volume of stolen data; the reported 1-terabyte figure was Lapsus$’s claim.
  • The ultimate downstream impact of the leaked information.
  • In NVIDIA’s formal filing, the identity of the attackers as Lapsus$; that attribution appeared in contemporary media reporting of the group’s claim.
