Gartner forecasts that worldwide data-center systems spending will reach $822 billion in 2026, up 62.5% from 2025. Separately, Denmark launched Gefion, a national AI supercomputer, in October 2024. The figures describe different things: a global market projection and one operational research and enterprise facility.
What Gartner’s 2026 data-center forecast says
In a forecast published July 27, 2026, Gartner estimated worldwide spending on data-center systems at $822 billion for 2026, a projected 62.5% increase from its $506 billion estimate for 2025. These are Gartner forecast figures, not final spending results.

Gartner also projected growth in infrastructure as a service (IaaS), a cloud-computing market category, and in overall IT spending. Its estimates are in U.S. dollars:
| Worldwide category | 2025 estimate | 2026 forecast | Projected growth in 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Data-center systems | $506 billion | $822 billion | 62.5% |
| IaaS | $222 billion | $287 billion | 29.3% |
| Overall IT spending | $5.577 trillion | $6.369 trillion | 14.2% |
All figures in the table are Gartner estimates or forecasts from its July 27, 2026 worldwide IT spending forecast. Gartner Distinguished VP Analyst John-David Lovelock linked demand to AI infrastructure, cloud platforms, and intelligent applications, saying data-center systems and IaaS were “the top growth segments.”

Growth is not uniform across technology markets
Gartner’s projections do not mean every supplier or technology segment will benefit equally. Lovelock cautioned that “this is not a rising tide lifts all boats market trend”. Gartner cited pressures including inflation, supply shortages, higher hardware and memory costs, AI funding initiatives, and shifting priorities.
A separate Gartner release on September 16, 2026, forecast worldwide AI spending of $2.7 trillion for 2026, up 49.5% year over year. That is a broad AI-spending measure, not data-center systems spending; the two figures have different scopes and should not be added together or treated as equivalent. What Denmark’s Gefion supercomputer is
Gefion is a national AI supercomputer intended for research and enterprise workloads, not a consumer computer or a product available for ordinary retail purchase. Denmark’s first AI supercomputer was launched in Copenhagen on October 23, 2024. NVIDIA’s announcement describes a system with 1,528 H100 Tensor Core GPUs in a DGX SuperPOD, connected using Quantum-2 InfiniBand. Those configuration details are reported by NVIDIA, the technology supplier, in its account of the launch.

DCAI also said it was powered entirely by renewable energy; that is the operator’s stated claim, rather than an independent verification. Its announcement is titled “Denmark’s first AI supercomputer is now operational”.

A documented use case
In a June 11, 2025 announcement, NVIDIA reported that Novo Nordisk had an agreement with DCAI to use Gefion for drug discovery and AI workloads. It is a dated example of use, not an exhaustive customer list or confirmation of current access terms. NVIDIA’s announcement is “NVIDIA Partners With Novo Nordisk and DCAI to Advance Drug Discovery.”

Both developments sit within the expansion of AI infrastructure, but Gefion is not a measure of Gartner’s global market forecast, and the forecast does not establish Gefion’s performance or commercial terms. The available announcements also do not support an apples-to-apples performance ranking against other supercomputers.
