The higher figure appeared in later secondary coverage, and the available sources do not explain the difference or set out the bonus’s payment schedule, eligibility categories, service obligation, or funding authority. The underlying recruitment drive, announced in November 2025, sought up to 500 experienced law-enforcement officers across Park Police and ranger roles.
Which hiring bonus is current?
The clearest current official figure is $55,000: that is the amount on the U.S. Park Police officer recruitment page, last updated July 4, 2026. NPS U.S. Park Police careers
National Parks Traveler reported a $70,000 hiring bonus in 2026 in connection with recruitment efforts. That is a secondary report, not the amount listed on the current official Park Police page. The available sources do not explain whether the figures reflect different dates, roles, applicant categories, or other terms. Do not assume the $70,000 figure is the current offer for every job.
A December 2025 Senate press release raised questions about the funding source and authority for the reported $70,000 bonus and its service obligations. Those questions are not answers from NPS. The sources available here do not establish the bonus’s funding authority, payment timing, repayment conditions, or any required period of service. Senate inquiry about NPS hiring bonuses

What jobs did the November 2025 campaign cover?
On November 14, 2025, NPS announced a nationwide effort to recruit up to 500 experienced law-enforcement officers. Its stated breakdown was:
| Role | Number announced | Locations |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. Park Police officers | 300 | Washington, D.C.; New York City; San Francisco |
| Law-enforcement rangers | 200 | Assignments at national parks |
The announcement describes a recruitment target, not confirmation that all 500 positions were filled or that each opening carried the same bonus. NPS said the hiring was intended to support public safety, visitor security, emergency response, law enforcement, and protection of natural and cultural resources. What applicants should expect
U.S. Park Police officer positions
The current Park Police careers page outlines the qualifications and hiring sequence. Qualified applicants may be invited to take the National POST test; an invitation is not a guarantee of selection. Applicants should use the official page for the current qualification details and application instructions, since requirements can be role- and vacancy-specific. Law-enforcement ranger positions
NPS’s 2025 announcement said ranger applicants needed qualifying academy completion and/or recent sworn law-enforcement service. Selected candidates were to complete a four-week bridge course followed by at least 11 weeks of field training. These criteria describe the ranger pathway in the announcement; they should not be treated as universal requirements for every Park Police opening.

Does this hiring reverse earlier layoffs or freezes?
No broad reversal is established by the available figures. The law-enforcement recruitment was a specific effort to hire up to 500 experienced officers, while earlier 2025 reporting described a separate staffing development: NPS restoring some fired positions and planning up to 7,700 seasonal hires. Those seasonal jobs are not the same positions as the later law-enforcement campaign, and the sources do not provide a complete agency-wide account of layoffs, freezes, or net staffing changes. What to verify before relying on the bonus
- Check the specific vacancy announcement and current official recruitment page for the role and location you want.
- Ask the hiring contact to confirm the bonus amount applicable to that position and whether it is still available.
- Request written terms explaining eligibility, payment timing, any service commitment, and repayment conditions before accepting an offer.
- Do not treat a legislator’s request for information or a secondary report as confirmation of NPS’s bonus terms.
