Nordstrom said in August 2024 that it planned to let its corporate office leases in Los Angeles and Chicago expire, citing low use of the spaces. The announcement concerned corporate offices—not Nordstrom retail stores. The available reporting does not confirm when the leases expired or whether the offices have since closed.
What Nordstrom announced
GeekWire reported on August 19, 2024, that Nordstrom had confirmed plans to let its Los Angeles and Chicago corporate office leases expire. The company cited low use of the offices as a primary reason. The report did not give a lease-expiration date, and it described a plan rather than a confirmed completed closure.
The announcement was about corporate workplaces. It did not announce the closure of Nordstrom stores in either city.
What the plan meant for employees
Most employees based in Los Angeles and Chicago were expected to move to full-time remote roles. Some employees would be required to relocate to Seattle. Nordstrom also planned to use stores in both cities for smaller team gatherings.

The report did not state how many employees were affected. It included company-wide workforce figures from Nordstrom’s annual filing: about 54,000 employees as of February 3, with 75% supporting stores and 10% supporting the supply chain network. Those figures describe Nordstrom’s overall workforce, not the number of people affected by the office plan.
How Los Angeles and Chicago compared with New York
Nordstrom planned to maintain its New York City office. The 2024 report therefore described a change to the company’s corporate-office footprint in Los Angeles and Chicago, not a plan to eliminate all corporate offices outside Seattle.

Are the offices closed now?
The available sources do not establish whether the Los Angeles and Chicago leases ultimately expired or whether the offices are closed as of October 8, 2026. Nordstrom’s company history page says the company became privately held in 2025 after its acquisition by members of the Nordstrom family and El Puerto de Liverpool, but it does not address the office plan’s completion. The 2025 ownership change is not evidence of the offices’ current status.
