United Airlines said on March 20, 2026, that it would reduce about five percentage points of its planned 2026 capacity in the near term as jet-fuel prices surged. That figure describes planned capacity—not a verified count of exactly 5% of individual flights canceled. CEO Scott Kirby said the airline planned to trim off-peak flying, reduce some Chicago O’Hare capacity after an FAA process, and pull service to Tel Aviv and Dubai.
Why is United cutting flights?
United linked the planned capacity reduction to higher jet-fuel costs. In a March 20 employee message, CEO Scott Kirby said jet-fuel prices had more than doubled in the previous three weeks and that some flying could not absorb the added expense. He wrote: “there’s no point in burning cash in the near term on flying that just can’t absorb these fuel costs.”
Kirby estimated that if prices stayed at the level he was describing, United would face an additional $11 billion in annual fuel expense. This was a conditional estimate—not a report of costs already incurred or a certain forecast. In the same message, he compared that amount with what he characterized as United’s profit of less than $5 billion in its best year. United’s March 20, 2026 employee message is the primary source for the airline’s stated rationale and estimates.
The Economic Times reported that Kirby was preparing for a scenario of oil at $175 per barrel and above $100 through the end of 2027. Those figures describe a reported planning scenario, not prices confirmed as realized or a current forecast. The Economic Times reported that scenario on March 21, 2026.

Which United flights and services did the plan cover?
United described the near-term reduction as about five percentage points of planned capacity, divided among three categories:
| Planned change | What United said | Timing or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Off-peak flying | About three percentage points, including redeyes and flights on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays | Q2 and Q3 of 2026 |
| Chicago O’Hare | About one percentage point of capacity | After the FAA process concluded |
| Tel Aviv and Dubai | About one percentage point tied to service United said it had pulled | United’s announcement described the service as already pulled |
The components add up to United’s roughly five-point estimate. They do not establish the exact number of departures canceled, the specific flight numbers affected, or whether every planned reduction was ultimately implemented.

Was United cutting its longer-term growth plans?
Kirby said the near-term schedule adjustment would not change United’s aircraft-delivery plans or total capacity plans for 2027 and beyond. He described this as management’s position at the time: “To be clear, nothing changes about our longer-term plans for aircraft deliveries or total capacity for 2027 and beyond.” The statement does not independently confirm later delivery or capacity outcomes.

At the time of the March 20 announcement, United said its plan was to restore its full schedule in fall 2026. The available reporting establishes that announced intention, but not whether the reductions were all carried out or whether the full schedule was later restored.
