Niobium Raises More Than $23 Million for FHE Hardware Acceleration

Niobium’s 2025 financing is intended to move its FHE hardware toward ASIC development and customer pilots. Later announcements describe The Fog platform and a foundry partnership, but not proof of completed production or independently verified performance.

Niobium announced on December 3, 2025, that it raised more than $23 million in an oversubscribed follow-on investment to its seed round. The company said it will use the financing to advance its fully homomorphic encryption (FHE) hardware toward production silicon and customer pilots—not that production chips or broad deployments are already complete.

What Niobium announced

Niobium’s December 3, 2025, announcement described the financing as a follow-on to its seed round and said it was oversubscribed. The amount was more than $23 million. The announcement was carried by citybiz; the funding amount and plans are company-reported.

Niobium CEO Kevin Yoder framed the company’s goal as building hardware for an “encrypted future.” That is the company’s vision, rather than a statement that encrypted computing has eliminated data-security risks.

What the funding is intended to support

Niobium said the money would advance its second-generation FHE platforms and move the work from prototype toward production-ready silicon, pilots, and early deployment. Its stated work includes:

  • Hardware-software co-design, compiler optimization, and architecture refinement.
  • Finalizing a production silicon architecture and developing a production application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC).
  • Building infrastructure for customer pilots and integrations, alongside ecosystem work.

These are planned uses and milestones. The announcement does not establish that the ASIC has entered production or that customer deployments have been completed.

Why FHE hardware needs acceleration

Computing without decrypting first

Fully homomorphic encryption allows computations to be performed on ciphertexts, so data can remain encrypted while a workload is processed. The intended security benefit is to reduce the exposure of plaintext to the infrastructure operator. It does not, by itself, establish that every part of an application or its inputs and outputs are protected from every risk.

The performance challenge

FHE operations can require substantially more computation than equivalent operations on unencrypted data. A 2023 preprint on the TREBUCHET architecture describes this compute burden as a central obstacle and argues that FHE must narrow the gap to become practical. That paper supplies technical context; it does not validate Niobium’s hardware or performance claims. Read the TREBUCHET paper.

How Niobium’s product path has developed

Subsequent announcements connect the accelerator hardware to a cloud service, but hardware development, platform access, and independently measured performance are separate questions.

Milestone What was announced What it establishes
December 3, 2025 More than $23 million in follow-on financing and plans for production ASIC development and customer pilots. citybiz Funding and stated plans, not completed production or deployment.
February 19, 2026 SEMIFIVE announced an accelerator development design win with an approximately KRW 10 billion (USD 6.86 million) contract value and Samsung Foundry’s 8nm Low Power Ultimate process. SEMIFIVE announcement Partner-reported contract and process details. SEMIFIVE described commercial viability prospectively.
April 2, 2026 Niobium introduced The Fog, a cloud platform for applications and AI workloads on encrypted data. It said its mistic Core FPGA accelerator would support the platform at launch, while an ASIC was being developed with SEMIFIVE and Samsung Foundry. Niobium announcement A described platform and hardware path; historical launch plans do not confirm current availability.
June 2026 A later partner-program release said broader access to The Fog was planned for Q3. Niobium partner-program announcement A future plan as stated in that release, not confirmation of present access or current program terms.

Niobium’s April announcement named encrypted semantic search (secure RAG), federated learning, and encrypted machine-learning classification as initial application examples. It also claimed “up to 2x” faster FHE performance than any GPU or accelerator then on the market. That comparison is Niobium’s claim; the cited announcements do not provide an independent benchmark establishing it.

What the financing does—and does not—mean for readers

For people following privacy technology or investing in the sector, the financing signals that Niobium is funding a transition from prototype work toward a production-oriented product path. It does not, on the available announcements, establish the company’s valuation, revenue, customer adoption, completed ASIC production, or commercial success. Nor does the amount raised alone indicate whether the eventual hardware will outperform alternatives on real workloads.

A useful evaluation of an FHE accelerator would require comparable information about supported encryption schemes and software compatibility, security parameters, end-to-end workload benchmarks and baselines, memory and data movement, developer tools, deployment model, and production availability. The cited material does not provide enough comparable benchmark data to rank Niobium against competing accelerators.
