If you are weighing a resale listing now, compare its full cost and terms with a current established-retailer offer. A preorder confirmation or seller’s promise is not proof that the seller can deliver. Check what the listing actually promises, and whether it meets eBay’s presale rules, before paying a premium.

What the launch-window eBay surge did—and did not—show
The launch-era report concerned buyers trying to obtain a console ahead of the June 5, 2025 U.S. launch. Tech Times reported more than 100 eBay listings shortly before launch, with many priced from $650 to $750. That is a dated observation from the article, not a verified count, price range, or description of eBay listings today. Read the historical report.
Nintendo later reported more than 6 million Switch 2 units sold through globally in the seven weeks after launch. A Nintendo investor chart published in 2026 indicates about 15 million cumulative units by the fourth week of December 2025; that figure is approximate because it is read from the chart. Neither figure tells you whether a U.S. retailer has stock today or when another restock will happen. Nintendo’s 2025 investor materials and its 2026 investor chart provide historical sales context, not a live inventory forecast.

Should you pay a premium for an eBay listing?
Only consider it if the added cost is worth the earlier or more certain access to you, and the listing’s delivery terms are clear enough to assess. Do not treat a high price or presale status alone as proof of fraud. The available policy and historical reporting establish checks to make; they do not establish that any particular seller is dishonest or will fail to deliver.
Compare the eBay offer with a current established-retailer offer before deciding. Include the total shown price, shipping, taxes where shown, and the value of anything bundled. A listing that looks cheaper at first can cost more after shipping or include different items. Conversely, a premium may buy a specific bundle or delivery timing—but only if those details are explicit and useful to you.

What eBay requires of presale listings
eBay’s policy, accessed October 8, 2026, requires a presale listing to identify itself as “presale” in both its title and description, state when the item will be available to ship, and guarantee shipment within 40 business days of purchase. The policy also says the handling time should account for obtaining the item as well as getting the package to the carrier. Read eBay’s presale listings policy.
A listing that does not appear to meet those terms warrants caution, but the policy alone does not determine whether a specific listing violates eBay’s rules or predict what enforcement action eBay will take. eBay says possible consequences for policy violations include listing removal, warnings, restrictions, or account suspension. Marketplace rules can change, so check the policy again when you are considering a purchase.

How to assess the seller’s promise
A seller may claim to have a preorder confirmation, but that is a claim about an order—not proof that the seller has the console, can transfer the order, or will fulfill your purchase. Check what the listing actually says will be delivered and when. If the seller’s description conflicts with the title, shipping terms, or messages, do not assume the more favorable interpretation will apply.
Nintendo’s online-auction guidance recommends shopping within your own country, checking an auction site’s reputation through consumer or business complaint resources, and considering whether the auction operator also runs a conventional retail business. What Nintendo’s resale actions mean for U.S. buyers
On May 27, 2025, Nintendo announced cooperation with Mercari, LINE Yahoo, and Rakuten Group to help prevent improper listings of Nintendo-related products, including Switch 2, on those services. - Check a current normal-retail offer. Verify the retailer, seller, stock status, total price, and bundle details directly before comparing. The historical launch figures do not establish current availability.
- Read the whole resale listing. Identify whether it is a presale or an in-hand item, what is included, and the promised delivery timing.
- Check eBay’s presale terms. Confirm the presale label, ship-availability date, and 40-business-day shipment guarantee where the listing is a presale.
- Assess the seller and your exposure. Consider seller reputation, domestic versus international transaction, and whether you could tolerate a delay or dispute.
- Pay the premium only for a clear, worthwhile difference. If you cannot tell what you will receive or when it will ship, or the price premium is not worth that uncertainty to you, wait for a verifiable retailer offer instead.
