How much does Nintendo Switch 2 cost now?
Nintendo of America lists the console at a U.S. MSRP of $499.99, increased from $449.99 on September 1, 2026. Did tariffs cause Nintendo’s price increase?
Nintendo’s U.S. price notice says the change reflects “various changes in market conditions” that it expects to continue over the medium to long term. It does not identify tariffs as the specific cause of the September 2026 increase. Nintendo of America’s price notice

- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Tariffs are relevant context, but not proof of the reason for this particular change. In a January 13, 2026 report, Tom’s Guide quoted Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa saying Nintendo’s basic policy was to recognize tariffs as a cost and pass them on to prices as much as possible, while also noting the importance of adoption during a new console’s lifecycle. That general approach neither identifies the cause of the later U.S. revision nor means another increase is certain.
What changed in other markets?
Nintendo announced different price revisions by region. These figures are not directly comparable as tax-equivalent prices: the currencies, effective dates and tax treatment differ.

Will the price go up again—and should you buy now?
Nintendo’s reviewed official announcements do not give a date, amount or forecast for another increase. Buying now solely to beat a presumed future hike would mean acting on speculation, not a confirmed announcement. If you are deciding whether to buy, compare the current local checkout price with your budget and the value you expect from the console rather than assuming another increase is imminent.

What can change the checkout total?
In the United States, sales tax depends on local law. In California, a covered battery-embedded waste recycling fee applies to listed products including Switch 2: Nintendo Support says it began January 1, 2026 and is 1.5% of the retail sale price, capped at $15 per product. This is specific to California, not a nationwide charge. Nintendo Support’s fee guidance
Optional storage consideration
Switch 2 has 256 GB of internal storage and supports microSD Express cards for additional storage; an ordinary microSD card is not an equivalent substitute. Extra storage is optional, not a requirement to use the console. See Nintendo’s launch announcement and product specifications for the stated storage details.
