What Nintendo’s Switch 2 pricing change means
Nintendo’s U.S. support page says the new approach begins in May 2026 with preorders for Yoshi and the Mysterious Book. It applies to new Nintendo-published digital games exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2. For qualifying titles, the physical and digital editions will have different MSRPs. Nintendo attributes the difference to the costs of producing and distributing packaged and digital formats, while saying the games offer the same experience in either format. Nintendo Support’s pricing explanation does not establish one fixed price gap for every game.

Does a physical copy always cost more?
No. MSRP is a manufacturer’s suggested price, not a guaranteed price at a retailer’s checkout. Nintendo says retail partners set their own prices and that pricing may vary by title, so an actual offer can differ from the suggested prices. The announced policy means qualifying editions will have different MSRPs; it does not prove that a physical copy will always be more expensive than the digital edition when you buy it.
Reported price for the first example
GamesRadar reported U.S. prices of $59.99 for the digital version and $69.99 for the physical version of Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, with a May 21, 2026 release date. Those are reported example prices, not verified current checkout prices or a universal $10 premium. GamesRadar’s report provides the specific example; check the retailer’s current listing before comparing offers.

How this differs from earlier Switch 2 pricing
Nintendo of America’s 2025 launch notice listed the same MSRP for physical and digital versions of Mario Kart World ($79.99) and Donkey Kong Bananza ($69.99). Those examples show that the later announcement is a change in approach for qualifying future releases, not evidence that physical Switch 2 games have always had a higher suggested price. Nintendo of America’s launch announcement gives those 2025 prices.

Do not assume every physical Switch 2 release stores all game data on its card. Nintendo’s game-key card format stores a key to activate the software rather than the full game data. Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said an internet connection is required for the initial download, and the card must be inserted for subsequent gameplay. Nintendo’s 2025 shareholder-meeting Q&A explains the format.

- Blast off on a high-octane adventure to save a star system from invasion
- Tear through space, soar across planets, and shoot loads of foes out of the sky at every step of the way

When deciding between editions, check the specific title’s packaging or product listing to see whether it is a game-key card. A physical purchase may involve downloading the game before play, while a digital edition is downloaded directly; the pricing announcement itself does not change what each format contains.

What to compare before buying

- Card format: Confirm whether a physical edition includes the game data or uses a game-key card that requires an initial download.
- Your preferred format: Nintendo says the games provide the same experience in packaged and digital formats, but the physical card’s download requirements can differ.
