Nintendo–Palworld Lawsuit Seeks ¥10 Million in Damages, Not a Fixed $65,700

Pocketpair reported a ¥10 million combined principal damages claim in the Nintendo–Palworld lawsuit. The $65,700 figure is an approximate conversion, not a court award.

Nintendo and The Pokémon Company sued Palworld developer Pocketpair in Tokyo on September 18, 2024, seeking an injunction and damages over alleged patent infringement. Pocketpair later said the plaintiffs sought ¥5 million from each company—¥10 million total in principal, plus unspecified late-payment damages. The often-cited $65,700 is only an approximate conversion of that yen figure, not a fixed-dollar claim, court award, or judgment.

What Nintendo and The Pokémon Company filed

Nintendo said on September 19, 2024, that it and The Pokémon Company had filed a patent-infringement lawsuit against Pocketpair in the Tokyo District Court the previous day. The plaintiffs allege that Palworld infringes multiple patent rights and seek an injunction and compensation for damages. Those are the plaintiffs’ allegations and requested remedies, not a court finding. Nintendo’s announcement describes the action in those terms.

How much damages are they seeking?

Pocketpair’s November 8, 2024, report says the plaintiffs seek ¥5 million plus late-payment damages for The Pokémon Company and another ¥5 million plus late-payment damages for Nintendo. That makes ¥10 million in principal damages combined; the late-payment amounts are additional and not specified in the report. Pocketpair’s account is the source for the breakdown.

The $65,700 figure in the headline is an approximate yen-to-dollar conversion, not the currency amount reported by Pocketpair. Exchange rates change, and the cited company report does not state a dollar figure. It should not be read as an exact or fixed-dollar demand—or as money awarded by a court.

Which patents are named?

Pocketpair identified three Japanese patents in its November 2024 report: Nos. 7545191, 7493117, and 7528390. The report says the plaintiffs seek an injunction against Palworld and the damages described above. These details are Pocketpair’s account of the claim; they do not establish that a court has found any patent infringement.

Pocketpair’s response and the changes it described

In a statement dated May 8, 2025, Pocketpair said it disputed the claims and asserted that the patents in question were invalid. It also connected changes to Palworld gameplay with the ongoing proceedings at that time. These are Pocketpair’s positions and descriptions, not independent findings about the merits of the case. Pocketpair’s statement gives its account.

  • Patch v0.3.11, released November 30, 2024: Pocketpair said the patch removed the ability to summon Pals by throwing Pal Spheres and replaced it with a static summon beside the player.
  • From patch v0.5.5 onward: Pocketpair said players needed a glider in their inventory to glide. Pals could still provide passive gliding buffs.
