For the quarter ended August 31, 2026, revenue fell 4% to $11.2 billion, NIKE Direct sales fell 8%, and Converse revenue plunged 28%. Nike also forecast a high-single-digit revenue decline for fiscal 2027. The company reports traction in performance running in selected markets, but its broader results show that substantial work remains.
What Nike’s latest results say about its recovery
Nike reported fiscal first-quarter 2027 results on October 1, 2026. Revenue was $11.2 billion, down 4% year over year as reported and 5% on a currency-neutral basis. NIKE Brand revenue was $11.0 billion, also down 4%.

The decline was not uniform across regions: Nike attributed the overall revenue weakness primarily to Greater China and EMEA, partly offset by growth in North America. It did not publish a measure in these results of how many customers had stopped buying or how customer trust had changed.
| Measure | Fiscal Q1 2027 result |
|---|---|
| NIKE, Inc. revenue | $11.2 billion, down 4% reported and 5% currency-neutral year over year |
| NIKE Direct revenue | $4.1 billion, down 8% reported and 9% currency-neutral |
| NIKE Brand Digital | Down 13% |
| Nike-owned stores | Down 5% |
| Wholesale revenue | $6.8 billion, down 1% |
| Converse revenue | $263 million, down 28% |
Gross margin increased 60 basis points to 42.8%, while net income fell 2% to $712 million and diluted earnings per share were $0.48. Nike attributed the margin improvement primarily to lower warehousing and logistics costs; that improvement alone does not show that consumer demand strengthened. Inventory was $7.8 billion at August 31, down 3% year over year.

Why the sales channels matter
The latest quarter shows weakness in both direct and wholesale sales, rather than a simple shift from Nike’s own channels toward growing wholesale partners. NIKE Direct fell 8%, while wholesale slipped 1%. Direct includes both Nike-owned stores and digital sales, and digital’s 13% decline was steeper than the 5% decrease at stores.
The pattern follows a channel split in fiscal 2026, when Nike reported $46.4 billion in full-year revenue, flat as reported and down 2% currency-neutral. Wholesale revenue rose 6% to $27.5 billion, while NIKE Direct fell 6% to $17.7 billion; NIKE Brand Digital declined 12%. The earlier wholesale growth did not continue in Q1 FY2027.

These figures describe where sales occurred, not why individual customers chose one channel or brand over another. They are useful indicators of Nike’s business performance, but they do not establish a specific cause for customer behavior.

Performance running shows a limited positive signal
On its FY2026 earnings call, Nike said it gained 5 percentage points of running market share in statement footwear across Western Europe and North America. Management also said wholesale growth and retail sales comparisons with Foot Locker were positive for the first time in four years. Those are Nike’s reported claims; they are not independent confirmation, and they cover selected measures and markets rather than the entire business.

Sportswear, Jordan Brand, and Greater China remain priorities
In its October 2026 results release, Nike said it was taking deliberate action to reposition NIKE Sportswear, Jordan Brand, and Greater China. CEO Elliott Hill said, “We have more work to do in NIKE Sportswear, Jordan Brand and Greater China, and we’re taking deliberate actions to strengthen those businesses the right way for the long-term.”
That statement aligns with the quarter’s regional and brand pressures: Greater China and EMEA were the main sources of Nike Brand’s decline, and Converse revenue dropped 28%. Running progress in two regions cannot, by itself, offset or resolve these broader weaknesses.

What Nike forecasts for fiscal 2027
Nike expects fiscal 2027 revenue to decline by a high-single-digit percentage. That is management’s forward-looking estimate, not a reported result. The company also forecast an effective tax rate in the mid-20% range and adjusted diluted EPS of $1.15 to $1.35, excluding about $0.15 of Pace restructuring expense.

What Pace is intended to do—and what its savings estimate means
Nike introduced Pace as an operating-model transformation building on its earlier cost-realignment plan. The company says the program includes modernizing its global supply chain, establishing a new campus in India for enterprise capabilities, realigning to three geographies, and streamlining the organization. Hill described the aim as accelerating and scaling momentum in the performance business.
Nike estimates that Pace will produce approximately $2.5 billion in cumulative savings through FY2031. The estimate is before approximately $1.0 billion in expected pre-tax charges through FY2031 and before future reinvestment; it is also in addition to approximately $0.3 billion of severance costs recognized in FY2026. Nike says the estimate depends on assumptions and actual results may differ materially. It is a projected gross savings figure—not savings already achieved or a net benefit after costs and reinvestment.
What the evidence can and cannot establish
Revenue, channel, regional, and brand results show that Nike’s business remains under pressure in important areas. They do not directly count customers who have left or measure current trust, preference, or purchase intent. The available company data therefore cannot support a precise claim about how many customers Nike must win back or prove why sales have fallen.

Nike’s FY2026 shareholder letter characterized the recovery as uneven: “Progress has been encouraging, but we know this comeback will not be a straight line. There are areas where we are gaining traction and others where we still have important work ahead.” The latest quarter reinforces that distinction: performance-running signals in selected markets coexist with falling overall revenue, a sharp Converse decline, and a weak full-year outlook.
