Nifty’s 170-Point Gap and a 6.5% KOSPI Fall: What the Verified Reports Show

The cited reports place the Nifty IT rally and KOSPI declines on separate dates. Here is what the October, July and June market updates actually reported.

The figures in the headline cannot be confirmed as one market session from the reports available. A Reuters-syndicated update published by Business Standard on October 13, 2026, reported the KOSPI down 6% in early trading, but did not report a 170-point Nifty gap or an Indian IT rally. A separate July 2 report recorded a Nifty IT rally alongside a different KOSPI decline. Those sessions should not be combined.

What happened in the verified October 13 report?

Business Standard’s Reuters-syndicated market update, first published at 8:23 a.m. IST on October 13, 2026, described a broad Asian selloff led by technology shares. It reported the KOSPI down 6% in early trading, the MSCI Asia-Pacific index excluding Japan down 2%, and Japan’s Nikkei down 2.6% after returning from a holiday. These were intraday figures, not closing results. Read the report.

The same report listed Brent crude futures at $105.9 a barrel, near a two-week high at the time. That is a dated quote from the October 13 report, not a current oil price.

Why were Asian markets under pressure?

The report described several overlapping concerns rather than one established cause: chip selling on Wall Street, worries about competition in AI stocks, elevated oil and geopolitical risk, positioning ahead of inflation data, and the approach of U.S. bank earnings reports. These factors can weigh on sentiment together, but the report does not establish that any single one caused the KOSPI’s decline.

How oil and inflation concerns connect

Higher energy prices can add to inflation pressure. If investors expect inflation to remain elevated, they may also anticipate higher interest rates or fewer rate cuts, which can weigh on share valuations. The report quoted Charu Chanana, chief investment strategist at Saxo in Singapore, saying: “Markets are rediscovering that geopolitics matters most when it feeds back into inflation.” The October 13 report attributed the market explanation to the analysts it named; it did not prove a single causal chain.

How the separate Indian IT rally report differs

India Today’s July 2, 2026 report describes another session. It said the Nifty IT index rose as much as 4.6% to 26,946.35 after falling 6.5% over the previous four sessions; the KOSPI fell nearly 8% in that episode. These figures refer to the Nifty IT index—not a 170-point gap in the Nifty 50—and to a different date from the October report. Read the July report.

Other KOSPI selloffs are separate events

Yonhap reported that the KOSPI closed down 676.18 points, or 8.29%, at 7,484.41 on June 8, 2026. Its account cited worries about AI profitability, semiconductor losses, and a possible hawkish shift by the U.S. Federal Reserve. This was a separate historical decline, not confirmation of the headline’s 6.5% figure. Read Yonhap’s report.

What investors can reasonably conclude

  • The exact combination of a 170-point Nifty gap, an IT rally, and a 6.5% KOSPI fall has not been verified by the cited reports.
  • The October 13 report documents a 6% early-trading KOSPI drop amid technology selling, elevated oil and geopolitical concerns, and positioning ahead of inflation data and U.S. bank earnings.
  • The Nifty IT rally was reported on July 2, while the October 13 KOSPI decline was a different session. The June 8 KOSPI close was a third event.
  • Market headlines can mix index names, intraday moves, closing changes, and dates. Check the session and index before drawing conclusions about why markets moved.
