In NSE Indices factsheets dated September 30, 2026, Nifty Metal had the stronger reported one- and five-year returns, but its annualized volatility was roughly twice as high over the one-year period and more than twice as high over five years. The figures describe index history, not a forecast or the guaranteed return of any fund.
What the two indices actually represent
Nifty Metal: a sector bet on metals and mining
NSE Indices describes Nifty Metal as an index designed to reflect the behaviour and performance of the metals sector, including mining. It can contain a maximum of 15 constituents. That small, sector-specific universe means the index is closely tied to the earnings, prices, capital spending and policy environment affecting metal producers and miners.

The index uses free-float market capitalisation with periodic capped weighting. At each rebalance, no constituent may exceed 33% and the combined weight of the top three constituents may not exceed 62%. These limits reduce, but do not remove, concentration. Semi-annual rebalancing means membership and weights can change as market values and eligibility change.
Nifty 50: a broad large-company benchmark
NSE Indices calls Nifty 50 a well-diversified index of 50 companies reflecting overall market conditions. It uses free-float market-capitalisation weighting and is rebalanced semi-annually. Its constituents come from several parts of the economy rather than one industry.

The September 30, 2026 factsheet shows Metals & Mining at 4.86% of Nifty 50. Therefore, buying a Nifty 50-tracking product gives some metal exposure, but it is not a substitute for a metals-sector index. The remaining exposure is distributed among other industries, so company-specific and commodity-specific shocks generally have less influence on the whole index.

Matched returns and volatility through September 30, 2026
The following figures come from the Nifty Metal and Nifty 50 factsheets dated September 30, 2026. QTD, YTD and one-year returns are absolute returns in the factsheets; periods longer than one year are annualised compound annual growth rates (CAGR). Standard deviation is the average daily standard deviation, annualised. Comparing the same return variant and period is essential.
| Measure (factsheet date: September 30, 2026) | Nifty Metal | Nifty 50 |
|---|---|---|
| Price return, one year (absolute) | 27.12% | -8.09% |
| Price return, five years (annualised CAGR) | 17.86% | 5.13% |
| Total return, one year (absolute) | 28.45% | -7.09% |
| Total return, five years (annualised CAGR) | 19.34% | 6.38% |
| Annualised daily standard deviation, one year | 25.61% | 13.82% |
| Annualised daily standard deviation, five years | 33.37% | 13.42% |
On the reported one-year window, Nifty Metal’s price return exceeded Nifty 50’s by 35.21 percentage points. Over five years, its annualised price return was 12.73 percentage points higher. Those are historical differences between index series, not evidence that the sector will continue to outperform.
The risk gap is equally important. One-year annualised daily standard deviation was 25.61% for Nifty Metal versus 13.82% for Nifty 50. Over five years, the corresponding figures were 33.37% and 13.42%. Standard deviation measures dispersion of daily returns; it does not show the size of the worst drawdown, how quickly a loss recovered or whether an investor could tolerate the path.
Why the performance profiles differ
Sector concentration magnifies the cycle
Metal producers and miners are sensitive to commodity prices, global industrial demand, construction and infrastructure activity, energy and freight costs, currency movements, trade policy and company balance sheets. When several of those variables move favourably together, a concentrated sector index can rise much faster than a diversified benchmark. When they move against the sector, the same concentration can accelerate losses.

Nifty 50 also contains companies affected by the economic cycle, but weakness in one industry can be offset by strength in others. Its wider opportunity set is the reason it is commonly used as a core large-cap market benchmark rather than a targeted sector allocation.
Different exposure is not simply “higher return versus lower return”
The September 30, 2026 numbers show a higher return and higher volatility for Nifty Metal in the measured windows. They do not establish a permanent ranking. A sector can lead during one commodity or investment cycle and lag during another. Nifty 50’s lower historical volatility does not mean it cannot fall sharply; it means its daily returns were less variable over those specific windows.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePrice return versus total return
A price index records changes in constituent share prices. A total-return index assumes distributions such as dividends are reinvested. NSE Indices’ FAQ identifies total return as the appropriate benchmark for a mutual fund that earns dividends. A comparison of price return for one index against total return for the other would therefore be misleading.
| Use case | Like-for-like comparison | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Comparing quoted index price movements | Price return versus price return | Change in constituent prices, excluding dividends |
| Comparing a dividend-receiving fund with its benchmark | Total return versus total return | Price change plus assumed reinvestment of distributions |
| Assessing an investor’s actual ETF or index-fund result | Fund NAV or market return versus the appropriate total-return benchmark | Real-world result after expenses, tracking difference, taxes and trading effects |
For the matched factsheets, Nifty Metal’s total return was 28.45% over one year and 19.34% annualised over five years. Nifty 50’s was -7.09% and 6.38%, respectively. The difference between each index’s price and total return reflects distributions; it is not an additional prediction of future performance.
How much market risk has Nifty Metal carried?
Volatility
The factsheet’s annualised daily standard deviation was 25.61% for Nifty Metal versus 13.82% for Nifty 50 over one year, and 33.37% versus 13.42% over five years. A higher number indicates a wider historical spread of daily outcomes. It should not be read as a maximum annual loss or as a forecast of next year’s volatility.

Beta to Nifty 50
Nifty Metal’s beta was 1.28 over one year and 1.24 over five years. In those historical windows, the sector index tended to move more than Nifty 50 when measured against the benchmark. Beta is an average relationship, not a promise that a 1% market move will produce a precise 1.28% move in the sector.

Correlation
Correlation with Nifty 50 was 0.64 over one year and 0.69 over five years. The relationship is positive but well below 1, so Nifty Metal has shared some market movements while retaining sector-specific behaviour. Correlation can change as economic conditions, index composition and commodity cycles change.
| Risk statistic for Nifty Metal | One year | Five years |
|---|---|---|
| Beta versus Nifty 50 | 1.28 | 1.24 |
| Correlation with Nifty 50 | 0.64 | 0.69 |
Neither factsheet figure supplies a maximum drawdown, downside deviation or a measure of how often the sector lost money. If those risks matter to your decision, obtain the relevant fund or index history and examine those measures separately rather than inferring them from standard deviation.
What the weighting rules mean for an investor
Free-float market capitalisation
Both indices weight companies using shares available to public investors rather than every share issued. A company with a larger eligible market value generally receives a larger weight. This makes the index responsive to market prices but can also increase exposure to the companies that have already become the largest.
Capping in Nifty Metal
The Metal index’s 33% single-stock limit and 62% top-three limit prevent one company or three companies together from dominating completely at a rebalance. They do not make the index broadly diversified: with no more than 15 constituents and one sector, several holdings can still move for the same underlying reasons.

Semi-annual rebalancing
Rebalancing updates eligibility and weights at scheduled reviews. Between reviews, price changes can cause actual weights to drift. An index fund or ETF normally adjusts its portfolio to follow those changes, but the investor may experience a timing difference, transaction costs and tracking difference.
Which index fits which portfolio role?
Use Nifty 50 as a broad core exposure
Nifty 50 is the more natural starting point when the objective is one large-cap allocation spanning multiple industries. Its 50-company breadth and lower reported volatility can make it easier to use as a reference portfolio, although it remains an equity index and can lose value.
Use Nifty Metal only when sector exposure is intentional
Nifty Metal is relevant when you specifically want metals-and-mining exposure and accept that the outcome may differ substantially from the wider market. It is better viewed as a satellite or tactical allocation than as an automatic replacement for a diversified core, unless your overall portfolio already has a deliberate sector-concentration plan.
Check your existing exposure before adding a sector index
A broad equity fund may already own metal producers. Adding a Nifty Metal product can increase the same companies’ combined influence through direct holdings and indirect holdings. List your current funds, identify overlapping constituents and consider how much of the total portfolio would depend on one sector before buying.

How to invest in an index without confusing it with a product
You cannot purchase an index itself. You purchase a vehicle that attempts to track it, such as an exchange-traded fund, an index mutual fund or, for advanced users, a derivative contract. The index factsheet describes the benchmark; the product’s documents determine what you actually own and pay.

ETF example and the checks that matter
The Nifty Metal page maintained by the index provider lists ICICI Prudential and Mirae Asset as ETF issuers associated with the index. An ICICI Prudential factsheet dated July 31, 2026 describes its Nifty Metal ETF as an open-ended ETF tracking Nifty Metal, and the scheme appears in a SEBI listing. This establishes an investible example, not an endorsement.
- Confirm the exact benchmark. Check whether the product tracks Nifty Metal, Nifty 50, a price index or a total-return index.
- Read the latest scheme document. Verify expense ratio, tracking difference, portfolio concentration, creation and redemption process, and the stated risk factors.
- Check trading conditions for an ETF. Look at bid-ask spreads, average volume, exchange listing and whether the market price is above or below the fund’s indicative or reported NAV.
- Compare the fund’s history with its benchmark. A lower expense ratio does not guarantee better tracking; cash holdings, rebalancing costs, taxes and market frictions also matter.
- Plan the transaction and taxes. Brokerage, securities transaction charges, statutory levies and applicable capital-gains rules affect the investor’s net outcome. Confirm current rules for your tax status and holding period.
- Review concentration after purchase. Recheck the portfolio when the index or your other holdings are rebalanced, rather than assuming the original exposure stays unchanged.
An index fund bought at its calculated NAV and an ETF bought on an exchange can produce different investor returns even when both follow the same benchmark. The index return is therefore a reference point, not a promise of the product’s result.
A practical comparison process
Use the following sequence whenever you are deciding between a Nifty Metal-linked product and a Nifty 50-linked product:
- Define the job. Write down whether you need broad equity exposure or a deliberate metals-and-mining tilt.
- Match the series. Compare price with price or total return with total return, and use identical start and end dates.
- Record both return and risk. Put the relevant CAGR or absolute return beside standard deviation, beta and correlation instead of looking at return alone.
- Map concentration. Note the number of constituents, top holdings, sector weights and overlap with your existing portfolio.
- Evaluate the actual vehicle. Add expense ratio, tracking difference, spread, liquidity, taxes and transaction costs.
- Set a review rule. Decide in advance what would cause you to rebalance or stop adding, rather than reacting to a recent performance headline.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Treating a recent winner as a forecast: The 27.12% one-year Nifty Metal price return is a historical observation through September 30, 2026, not an expected next-year return.
- Comparing different return types: A price index and a total-return fund are not equivalent. Label every number before drawing a conclusion.
- Ignoring annualisation: The five-year figures are CAGRs, not the total amount gained over five years. A 17.86% CAGR is not the same as a 17.86% cumulative return.
- Confusing volatility with maximum loss: Standard deviation does not reveal the worst drawdown or the time needed to recover.
- Assuming an ETF exactly equals its index: Fees, cash balances, rebalancing, spreads and tracking difference create a gap.
- Assuming Nifty 50 has no metal exposure: The September 30, 2026 factsheet assigns Metals & Mining a 4.86% weight.
- Overlooking concentration through overlap: A sector ETF can duplicate companies already held through a broad-market fund.
- Using stale factsheet numbers: Index composition and performance change. If a later factsheet is available, use the newer matching date for both indices.
Bottom line for a decision
Nifty Metal and Nifty 50 are not competing versions of the same exposure. Nifty Metal offers targeted metals-and-mining participation, with the potential for stronger gains and materially larger fluctuations. Nifty 50 offers broader large-company exposure and had much lower measured volatility in the September 30, 2026 comparison. Choose between them by starting with the role you need in your portfolio, then compare like-for-like returns and the costs and tracking behaviour of the specific fund or ETF you would buy.
