Motilal Oswal Financial Services forecast that Nifty 50 companies’ aggregate earnings would rise 27% year on year in Q2FY27, which it described as the strongest growth in 17 quarters. That is a pre-results brokerage estimate, not a reported outcome or the market consensus. Separately, the Nifty 50 was reported to be 14% below its September 2024 peak in October 2026. The drawdown measures the index’s price decline from a past high; it does not measure earnings growth or imply that the index must recover.
How much are Nifty earnings expected to grow in Q2FY27?
Motilal Oswal’s estimate was 27% year-on-year growth in aggregate earnings for the Nifty 50 in Q2FY27. The brokerage characterized that as the strongest growth in 17 quarters. Because the estimate was published ahead of the results season, it describes what Motilal Oswal expected, not what companies ultimately reported. Economic Times and Fortune India reported the forecast in October 2026.

It was also more optimistic than a separate comparison of brokerage estimates: Reuters-reported figures carried by Economic Times BFSI put the average Nifty 50 profit-growth forecast from five brokerages at about 20%. Motilal Oswal’s 27% was the highest estimate in that comparison, not a consensus figure. Economic Times BFSI

A quarter is a three-month reporting period. “Fastest growth in 17 quarters” means Motilal Oswal’s 27% estimate was the strongest year-on-year Nifty 50 earnings growth rate across the 17-quarter comparison it cited. It does not mean earnings would grow at that rate for 17 consecutive quarters, nor that the forecast had already been confirmed by company results.
Why is the Nifty down 14% from its peak?
The 14% figure compares the Nifty 50’s October 2026 level with its peak in September 2024. It is a peak-to-current price-index drawdown, not a fall in earnings and not the same measure as the Q2FY27 earnings forecast. The reported figure does not by itself establish a single cause for the decline.
Business Standard cited global uncertainty, elevated energy prices, higher bond yields, geopolitical tensions and foreign-investor selling as pressures on Indian equities. It also reported that, in October 2026, the Nifty Midcap 150 was 2% and the Nifty Smallcap 250 was 3% below their respective September 2024 peaks. These are separate index comparisons. Business Standard
Why do the earnings estimates differ by company universe?
The 27% figure applies to the Nifty 50. Motilal Oswal also covered a broader 399-company universe, for which it forecast 22% aggregate earnings growth year on year in Q2FY27, or 24% excluding oil marketing companies (OMCs). Those estimates use a different set of companies and an explicit exclusion in the latter figure, so they should not be treated as alternative readings of the Nifty 50 estimate. Fortune India

Which sectors were expected to support growth?
Motilal Oswal identified Financials, Metals, Oil and Gas excluding OMCs, and Telecom as important supports in its outlook. Business Standard reported the following sector estimates for Q2FY27; each is a brokerage forecast, not a reported result:
| Sector or group | Motilal Oswal year-on-year earnings growth forecast |
|---|---|
| Metals | 44% |
| Oil and Gas, excluding OMCs | 34% |
| Telecom | 71% |
| Public-sector banks | 27% |
| Private banks | 24% |
The sector figures describe distinct groups and should not be added together to derive the Nifty 50’s aggregate forecast. The available reporting does not supply a corresponding growth percentage for every named supporting sector. Business Standard

Does a 14% drawdown mean the Nifty is cheap?
No. A percentage below a past peak describes price performance; it does not establish valuation. Business Standard separately reported that the Nifty 50 traded 18% below its long-period average, while the Nifty Midcap 150 was 4% below its average. Those are valuation comparisons reported for October 2026, distinct from the peak drawdowns, and their interpretation depends on the measure and date used. Neither statistic alone determines whether an index is attractively valued.

How to read the headline figures together
- 27%: Motilal Oswal’s forecast for Nifty 50 aggregate earnings growth year on year in Q2FY27, issued ahead of results.
- 17 quarters: The comparison period behind Motilal Oswal’s description of the forecast as the strongest growth rate.
- 14%: The Nifty 50’s reported price decline from its September 2024 peak as of the October 2026 coverage.
The earnings estimate and the drawdown answer different questions. The former is a brokerage view of company profits for a reporting quarter; the latter records how far the index stood below a previous high. Neither, alone or in combination, guarantees a particular future market move.
