If you’re considering a career change or want to strengthen your prospects in your current field, these 16 skills are practical places to start. They span AI, data, technology, communication and business—areas highlighted in recent platform reports. The list is an editorial menu, not a universal ranking, and learning a skill alone does not guarantee a job. Choose one that fits your target role and build a small project that shows what you can do.

How to choose a skill that can support your next job

Start with the roles you might apply for, rather than with a course catalog. Compare job descriptions for recurring tasks and tools, then choose a skill that would help you perform one of those tasks. Before committing, consider:

  • Role fit: Does the skill appear in the work you want to do?
  • Prerequisites: Can you begin with your current experience, or do you need foundational knowledge first?
  • Practice: Can you complete realistic exercises, not just watch lessons?
  • Proof: Can you create an artifact—such as an analysis, prototype or process guide—that demonstrates the skill?
  • Transferability: Would the skill also be useful in adjacent roles?

Coursera’s 2026 Job Skills Report analyzes learning activity from 6 million enterprise learners across nearly 7,000 organizations. LinkedIn’s 2026 analysis draws on member profile skill additions and hiring success among members hired in the past year, across 12 markets. Google’s Career Certificates report describes its own programs and internal and survey data. These are different populations and methods, not a single measure of demand across all employers or countries.

Coursera reported a 234% year-over-year increase in GenAI enrollments among its enterprise learners, a 120% average year-over-year increase in critical-thinking enrollments across analyzed career areas, and a 91% year-over-year increase in Professional Certificate enrollments among its enterprise learners. Those figures describe activity on Coursera, not job growth or a guarantee of hiring. LinkedIn grouped its findings into people skills, business and revenue growth, AI, and risk and compliance. The 16 options below synthesize those signals with Google’s certificate areas; they are not a published top-16 ranking. Coursera’s Job Skills Report 2026 and LinkedIn’s 2026 skills analysis explain their respective methods.

16 skills to learn online—and what to make

1. Generative AI literacy and responsible use

Learn how generative AI tools work at a practical level, where they can help, and where human review is essential. Practice checking factual claims, protecting sensitive information and recognizing when a task is unsuitable for an AI tool. Show it: a short work sample with an AI-assisted draft, your fact-checks and revisions, and a note about what information you chose not to share.

2. Prompt engineering and multimodal prompting

Practice giving a model clear instructions, relevant context, constraints and a useful output format. Multimodal prompting adds inputs such as images or other supported media; the relevant capabilities vary by tool. Coursera’s 2026 data-skills preview names prompt engineering and multimodal prompts among its fastest-growing data skills. Show it: a set of prompts and outputs for a realistic task, with a brief explanation of how you improved the results.

3. Critical thinking and AI-output evaluation

Critical thinking helps you assess whether an answer is supported, complete and suitable for its purpose—including when it comes from an AI system. Coursera reported an average year-over-year increase of 120% in critical-thinking enrollments across the career areas it analyzed. This is an enrollment change, not a measure of employer demand. Show it: an annotated review that identifies unsupported claims, verifies important facts and explains the final edits.

4. AI personalization and workflow design

Learn to identify repetitive work that might be improved with AI, map the steps and decision points, and decide where a person must review or approve the result. Personalization might involve adapting outputs to a user’s needs, but it should respect privacy and organizational rules. Show it: a simple workflow diagram with inputs, outputs, human checks and failure-handling steps.

5. Excel formulas and spreadsheet analysis

Build confidence with formulas, data organization and checks that help make a spreadsheet understandable and less error-prone. Coursera’s 2026 data-skills preview includes Excel formulas among its fastest-growing data skills. Show it: a cleaned, clearly labeled spreadsheet that answers a specific question, with formulas visible and a short explanation of the result.

6. Data analytics

Practice turning a question into an analysis: inspect the data, clean it, summarize patterns and communicate what the results do—and do not—show. Google lists data analytics among its Career Certificate areas. Show it: a small analysis with a documented question, method, chart or table, and concise findings.

7. Cybersecurity fundamentals

Learn core concepts such as secure access, threat awareness and safe handling of information. For hands-on practice, use a controlled learning lab rather than testing systems you do not own or have permission to assess. Google lists cybersecurity as a Career Certificate area. Show it: a lab write-up describing the scenario, steps taken, observations and basic mitigations.

8. IT support and troubleshooting

Develop a method for diagnosing common technology problems: gather symptoms, check likely causes systematically, document what changed and confirm whether the fix worked. Google lists IT support as a Career Certificate area. Show it: a troubleshooting guide or anonymized case log that records symptoms, diagnostic steps, resolution and escalation point.

9. Digital marketing and e-commerce

Learn how to plan a campaign or online-store improvement around a defined audience and objective. Useful practice can include audience research, messaging, channel selection and measurement; avoid assuming that a campaign result will transfer unchanged to another business. Google lists digital marketing and e-commerce as a Career Certificate area. Show it: a campaign brief with audience, goal, proposed content and a plan for measuring results.

10. Project management

Practice breaking a goal into deliverables, owners, dependencies and milestones, then tracking risks and decisions as work progresses. Google lists project management as a Career Certificate area. Show it: a project plan for a modest, realistic initiative, including schedule, responsibilities, risks and status updates.

11. User-experience design

Learn to understand user needs, sketch a simple flow, make a prototype and use feedback to improve it. Google lists UX design as a Career Certificate area. Show it: a small prototype with a stated user problem, test notes and a record of revisions.

12. Cross-functional collaboration

Many projects involve people with different expertise and priorities. Practice clarifying responsibilities, surfacing dependencies and recording decisions so work can move between teams. LinkedIn’s 2026 analysis includes people skills among its broad trend areas. Show it: a sample project brief or decision log that makes roles, handoffs and open questions clear.

13. Clear executive and stakeholder communication

Learn to adapt the level of detail to the audience and make recommendations easy to act on. A useful update distinguishes facts, assumptions, risks and decisions needed. Show it: a one-page briefing that states the issue, evidence, options and requested decision without burying the main point.

14. Public speaking and presentation

Practice structuring a short presentation, explaining evidence plainly and handling questions without overstating what you know. Show it: a recorded presentation or slide deck with a clear argument, supporting evidence and a concise response to likely questions.

15. Business development and go-to-market strategy

Build skills in understanding a customer problem, explaining a value proposition and planning how a product or service could reach its intended audience. LinkedIn identified business and revenue growth as a broad trend area. Show it: a concise go-to-market proposal that identifies a target customer, need, positioning and channels to test.

16. Governance, risk and compliance

Learn how organizations identify obligations and risks, document controls and escalate issues. The applicable rules depend on the industry and jurisdiction, so practice with a clearly defined scenario rather than presenting a generic checklist as legal advice. LinkedIn identified risk and compliance as a broad trend area. Show it: a risk register for a hypothetical process, with risks, owners, mitigations and escalation triggers.

How to turn online study into evidence employers can assess

  1. Choose a target task. Pick one recurring responsibility from the kinds of roles you want, rather than trying to study every skill on this list.
  2. Learn the fundamentals and practice. Select a course or other learning resource with exercises relevant to that task. Google describes its Career Certificates as online, on-demand and self-paced; its listed areas include cybersecurity, data analytics, digital marketing and e-commerce, IT support, project management and UX design. Course formats and availability can change, so check the current program details.
  3. Make a small, finished artifact. Create a project that demonstrates a complete piece of work: for example, analyze a dataset, document a troubleshooting process, draft a campaign or test a user flow. These are practice ideas, not employer-validated tests.
  4. Explain your decisions. Add a short note about the problem, your approach, tools used, limitations and what you would improve next. Remove confidential or personal information.
  5. Connect the proof to the role. In an application or interview, describe how the project relates to a job responsibility. A certificate can document course completion; a relevant work sample can show how you applied what you learned.

Google’s report describes its certificate programs and reports more than one million graduates globally, including 350,000 in the United States, based on Google internal data through December 2024. That is a program reach figure, not an independent employment outcome. Google’s Career Certificates Impact Report provides the provider’s account of its programs and figures.

What the reports can—and cannot—tell you

Platform activity can help identify areas people are learning or adding to professional profiles, but it cannot establish your personal chance of getting hired. Coursera’s figures reflect its enterprise learners; LinkedIn’s trends reflect its member-profile and hiring data; Google’s certificate information comes from the provider. None of these reports supplies an apples-to-apples ranking of all 16 skills by salary increase, time to learn or likelihood of landing a job. Treat them as signals to investigate against the requirements of the roles and labor market relevant to you.

A practical choice is usually the skill that matches a real target role, has a manageable starting point, offers hands-on practice and lets you produce a credible work sample. If you are changing careers, connect that sample to transferable experience you already have rather than relying on a course credential alone.
