Industry leaders have described a shortage of accredited forklift drivers, but the available reporting does not establish a statewide vacancy count or shortage rate.
What opened in Welshpool
Nara said the Welshpool facility would expand capacity beyond its existing Forrestfield provision and provide a base for forklift and other industry training. In its July 28, 2025 announcement, the provider said the first forklift session at the new site had taken place the previous week and was fully booked. It also said forklift training would run weekly after launch. Those are launch-period details, not confirmation of current schedules. Nara Training and Assessing’s announcement and PerthNow’s August 1, 2025 report described the site as a way to make training more accessible to workers and businesses in the Welshpool transport and logistics area.
PerthNow quoted Nara head of education and training Ryan Piggott saying the campus would deliver industry-essential courses, including the provider’s forklift ticket. The announcement described the facility as a dedicated warehousing training site. The sources establish Nara’s stated purpose and launch plans; they do not establish how much the site has since increased training capacity.
What is known about the forklift-driver shortage
The shortage claim comes from industry commentary, not a quantified statewide labour-market measure in the available reporting. PerthNow quoted Skill Hire chief executive Ben Dahlstrom saying Western Australia faced a shortage of accredited forklift drivers and that businesses were seeking retraining and upskilling for current ticket holders. Dahlstrom also attributed productivity impacts, consumer delays and higher prices to the shortage; those are his assessments, not independently measured effects in the report. PerthNow’s coverage does not provide a verified count of unfilled forklift-driver jobs or an estimated shortage rate.

That distinction matters for jobseekers and employers: the reporting supports the conclusion that providers and an industry executive saw demand for training, but it cannot show how large the shortage was, where it was most acute, or whether it persists at the same level today.
Training is separate from holding a high-risk work licence
Nara’s course listing identifies TLILIC0003, “Licence to operate a forklift truck.” It describes face-to-face training and says successful completion results in a statement of attainment and notice of assessment. The provider also describes a WorkSafe WA application process for the high-risk work licence. Completing training should not be treated as the same thing as having the licence issued. Check Nara’s current forklift course information and WorkSafe WA’s current process before enrolling or applying; eligibility, course details, fees and schedules can change.

What to compare before booking
Choose a course based on the training you need and verify the details directly with the provider. Useful points to confirm include:
- Course type and experience level: Ask whether the course is for a beginner, an experienced operator seeking assessment, or a specialist task such as order picking. Confirm eligibility and whether practical training is included.
- Location and delivery: Verify the training site, face-to-face practical components, duration and next available date. Welshpool’s weekly schedule was announced at launch in 2025; current availability is not established by that announcement.
- Licence steps and total cost: Ask what the course outcome is, whether the provider assists with the application, and which provider charges or WorkSafe fees apply. Do not rely on old prices as current.
- Clothing and equipment: Check the selected course’s own instructions. For its order-picking course, Nara says steel-capped boots and hi-vis gear are required and that hi-vis vests can be provided. These instructions are specific to that course, not a universal rule for all providers. See Nara’s order-picking course page.
A related training result, with limits
Skill Hire reported that a separate five-day warehouse program in Welshpool covered pick-and-pack practices, parcel storage and basic stacker forklift handling. The provider said all participants attended and six secured full-time employment. Those are Skill Hire’s reported results for that program; they do not show that all participants obtained forklift licences or that Nara’s new facility caused the employment outcomes. Skill Hire’s account is the source for the figures.
