On February 7, 2023, NetApp announced three QLC-based capacity-flash systems—the AFF C250, C400, and C800—and the entry-level performance-flash AFF A150. The C-Series was pitched as a lower-cost all-flash option for capacity-oriented workloads; the A150 served smaller and distributed deployments that need performance flash. NetApp said the hardware would become available in March 2023, while its separate NetApp Advance programs were available at announcement. NetApp’s announcement is the reference for the original product timing and positioning.
What NetApp announced
The announcement expanded NetApp’s storage lineup rather than introducing one system for every workload. The AFF C-Series targeted larger amounts of all-flash capacity at a lower cost than performance-focused flash, while the AFF A150 extended the performance-oriented A-Series to smaller and distributed deployments. NetApp also announced NetApp Advance, a set of lifecycle, cloud-transition, and efficiency programs—not a hardware product.
NetApp later included the C-Series and A150 in its fiscal 2023 portfolio results, confirming their place in the lineup: NetApp’s May 2023 results announcement.
Capacity flash: what it means and what QLC changes
Capacity flash aims to provide more storage per system and a lower cost per stored terabyte than performance-optimized flash, while keeping data on flash rather than hard drives. The C-Series uses QLC NAND, which stores four bits per cell. That density supports the capacity-focused proposition, but QLC generally brings more demanding write-management and endurance trade-offs than higher-endurance NAND.

The maximum rated workload is specified for operating at typical temperature of 40C. Workload Rate will vary depending on your hardware and software components and configurations.
- Designed to handle the demands of high-intensity 24x7 multi-user NAS environments
- Western Digital partners with a wide range of NAS system vendors for extensive testing to ensure compatibility with most NAS enclosures
QLC is not automatically unsuitable for enterprise use. The relevant questions are how much the workload writes, how sustained and random those writes are, what latency it requires, and how much data reduction the system can achieve. NetApp described the C-Series as suited to workloads that do not need the response times of its highest-performance A-Series systems. See NetApp’s QLC and workload guidance.
Hybrid flash combines flash with hard drives and can offer lower raw capacity cost where performance needs are moderate. Its behavior is not equivalent to an all-flash system. The right comparison is therefore not simply flash versus disk: buyers should compare usable capacity, workload performance, data-reduction assumptions, operating costs, and the cost of the full configuration.
How the four systems differ
| System | Positioning | Best-fit question |
|---|---|---|
| AFF C250 | Entry capacity flash | Does a smaller deployment need all-flash capacity without top-tier performance requirements? |
| AFF C400 | Midrange capacity flash | Does the environment need a balance of scale, capacity, and cost? |
| AFF C800 | High-end capacity flash | Does a larger enterprise need to extend capacity flash across a bigger deployment? |
| AFF A150 | Entry-level performance flash | Is performance, expansion, or a distributed deployment more important than maximum capacity density? |
These are NetApp’s product positions, not workload guarantees. The A150 is an A-Series performance-flash system; it should not be confused with the QLC-based C-Series. NetApp described it as intended for mid-size businesses, remote-office/branch-office sites, and distributed environments, with high availability, expansion options, and MetroCluster IP support. More context appears in NetApp’s A150 overview.

Capacity figures and efficiency claims need context
A contemporary StorageReview report listed the following maximum effective capacities for maximum SSD configurations, using a 5:1 storage-efficiency ratio. These are modeled effective capacities—not raw installed flash, guaranteed usable capacity, or a promise that a particular workload will achieve that ratio.

|---|---|
| AFF C250 | 35 PB |
| AFF C400 | 71 PB |
| AFF C800 | 106 PB |
| AFF A150 | 26 PB |
The figures and their 5:1 basis were reported by StorageReview. Effective capacity can differ substantially by data type: duplicate-rich or compressible data may reduce well, while encrypted, already-compressed, or random data may not. Buyers should separate raw installed flash, usable capacity after system overhead, modeled effective capacity after data reduction, and capacity remaining after snapshots, replication, spares, and failover reserves.
NetApp claimed the C-Series could reduce rack-space requirements by up to 95% and power and cooling costs by up to 85% compared with hybrid-flash storage. These are vendor claims, not universal or independently established outcomes; actual savings depend on the comparison system, workload, data reduction, utilization, and configuration. StorageReview’s reported technical figures likewise reflect product information and should not be treated as an independent workload benchmark.

ONTAP, licensing, and management
The C-Series runs NetApp ONTAP. NetApp presented ONTAP One as an all-in-one license covering its available ONTAP software portfolio, and highlighted multiprotocol access, data efficiency, data protection, ransomware protection, multitenancy, and scale. BlueXP was presented as the central management experience for hybrid-cloud environments. NetApp’s broader overview is at Redefine data center modernization.
Do not assume that every feature is included in every quote. Confirm the product configuration, software entitlements, contract terms, required licenses, supported protocols, and ONTAP version. NetApp’s current ONTAP platform-support documentation is a better reference for supported platforms than a frozen list of version details from the 2023 launch period.

Workloads and system selection
NetApp named VMware environments, databases, file workloads, virtual machines, and backup consolidation among the C-Series use cases. Those labels alone do not determine fit: latency targets, throughput, write rate, resiliency, capacity growth, and data-reduction behavior matter more than the application name.

- Consider C-Series when the priority is substantial all-flash capacity, ONTAP data management, and a lower-cost alternative to performance flash for moderate rather than extreme write intensity.
- Consider A150 when a smaller or distributed deployment needs performance-flash positioning, or when A-Series expansion and availability capabilities matter more than capacity density.
- Compare with A-Series performance systems for very latency-sensitive or transaction-heavy work that needs the lowest response times.
- Compare with hybrid storage where capacity economics dominate and workload performance can tolerate a flash-and-disk design.
- Consider cloud or software-defined storage only after accounting for network dependence, consumption and egress costs, operational responsibility, support, and lifecycle requirements.
Very write-intensive databases, sustained random-write workloads, strict low-latency applications, and applications dependent on high write endurance deserve particular qualification before placement on a QLC capacity-flash system. That is a workload-fit warning, not a categorical claim that QLC cannot support important applications.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What NetApp Advance included
NetApp Advance was announced alongside the systems as a commercial and lifecycle program. NetApp described non-disruptive controller upgrades through its Storage Lifecycle Program, a Cloud Advantage option, capacity-refresh choices, remote software updates, support and observability capabilities, and a planned sustainability SLA for Keystone customers.
The program also included a 4:1 SAN Storage Efficiency Guarantee for AFF all-flash systems, with a remediation commitment if workload-efficiency goals were not met. NetApp said terms and conditions applied; eligibility and the remedy should be confirmed in the customer’s contract. The program details are in NetApp’s NetApp Advance announcement. None of these program statements should be read as a universal entitlement or as proof that every workload achieves a particular data-reduction ratio.

Availability and purchasing checks
NetApp’s February 7, 2023 announcement said NetApp Advance was available immediately and that the AFF C-Series and A150 were expected to become available beginning in March 2023. FlexPod integration was planned for Q4 of NetApp fiscal year 2023. Those are historical launch dates, not a statement of current stock, configuration availability, or commercial terms.
The release timing matters because a contemporary secondary report described the hardware as available “today,” while NetApp’s own release gave March 2023 as the expected start. For the original timing, the primary announcement is the more reliable reference: NetApp’s February 2023 release.
Public purchase, per-terabyte, subscription, and standard support prices were not stated in the announcement materials. Enterprise quotes vary with configuration, geography, support, licensing, and discounting. Before committing, get the proposal to answer these questions in writing:
