Neil Armstrong Net Worth: What Is Known About His Estate

No reliable public source establishes Neil Armstrong’s net worth. The reported $6 million figure was a settlement paid to his estate after his death, not a valuation of his wealth.

A verified figure for Neil Armstrong’s net worth is not available in the cited public sources. NASA documents his career, but not his income, assets, debts or a complete estate inventory. A frequently cited $6 million figure refers to a confidential settlement paid to his estate in 2014, two years after his death—not to his net worth.

Why there is no reliable net-worth figure

Net worth is the value of a person’s assets minus liabilities at a particular point in time. Establishing Armstrong’s would require financial records or a documented estate accounting. The available sources provide neither a complete account of his finances during life nor an itemized inventory of his estate.

NASA’s official biography records Armstrong’s work as a naval aviator, research and test pilot, astronaut, engineering professor and corporate board member. It does not report his earnings, property, investments, debts or the value of his estate. Those career details cannot, on their own, establish a net-worth total.

What the reported $6 million settlement means

In a 2019 report based on court documents, the Associated Press reported that an Ohio hospital entered a confidential $6 million settlement with Armstrong’s estate in 2014 over allegations concerning post-surgical complications. Armstrong died on August 25, 2012, aged 82, following complications related to cardiovascular procedures, according to NASA. The settlement was made after his death and is a legal payment—not an estimate of his personal wealth or the full value of his estate. The report does not establish fault; it also said the hospital stood by its care.

#1 Best Overall

The Associated Press reported that about $5.2 million went to Armstrong’s two sons, $250,000 each to his brother and sister, and $24,000 each to six grandchildren. It also reported $160,000 in attorneys’ fees. These reported distributions account for the $6 million settlement; they are not a complete accounting of the estate.

What his career does—and does not—tell us about wealth

NASA’s biography says Armstrong served as a naval aviator from 1949 to 1952, joined NACA in 1955, entered NASA’s astronaut corps in 1962 and commanded Apollo 11. He left NASA in 1971, taught engineering at the University of Cincinnati through 1979, and later held corporate leadership and board roles.

This history explains the range of his professional work, but it does not show what he earned, saved, owned or owed. Public recognition, government service, university employment and corporate titles are not substitutes for financial records. Without documented figures for assets and liabilities, assigning a dollar value would be speculation.

How to assess net-worth claims about Armstrong

Online estimates should not be treated as established fact unless they identify a credible source and explain how the figure was calculated. Repetition from one site to another is not independent confirmation. A meaningful estimate would need a stated date and method, plus reliable evidence such as a documented estate inventory; the sources cited here do not provide that evidence.

NASA’s career biography and the Associated Press report carried by Courthouse News Service answer different questions: one documents Armstrong’s career, while the other describes a later settlement and reported distributions. Neither establishes his net worth.
