Cinemark and Regal announced promotions in the United States, while Cineplex offered a deal in Canada. Here’s what each one required; participation beyond the named chains and any repeat offers in 2027 are not established.
Where could you get free popcorn?
Regal: free large popcorn with a movie-themed costume
On January 19, Regal offered a free large popcorn to guests who wore a movie-themed costume and told the concessionist which movie or character they represented. The company also said costumes could not include face-obscuring masks or hoods outside designated photo areas, face paint, or realistic prop weapons. Regal’s announcement described this as a one-day promotion in the United States. Regal’s announcement
Cineplex: free small popcorn for eligible Scene+ members
In Canada, Cineplex offered Scene+ members a free small popcorn when they had a valid ticket for a screening on January 16, 17, 18, or 19, 2026. Members had to visit concessions on the same day as the screening and scan their membership card. A ticket and Scene+ membership were both required. Cineplex’s announcement
What did Cinemark offer?
$5 bucket fill, not free popcorn
Cinemark’s U.S. bring-your-own-bucket offer ran January 18–19, 2026. Guests could pay $5 for one fill of regular popcorn or kettle corn where available. Each guest was limited to one fill and had to bring a clean, sanitized bucket no larger than 400 ounces. Cinemark said a five-gallon Lowe’s blue bucket was acceptable, but it was not food-safe for direct food contact; the theater supplied a food-grade liner. There were no free refills, and mobile orders and third-party delivery were excluded. Cinemark’s announcement

What was Regal’s Snack Saver?
Separate from Regal’s one-day costume promotion, the company announced a 2026 Snack Saver membership. Members who purchased it could receive 50% off a large popcorn and large soft drink every 24 hours through the end of 2026. Regal advertised a $29.99 price through January 31, 2026, compared with a regular $39.99 price. Those were the company’s published offer terms and prices, not the price of the free-popcorn promotion. Can you expect the offers to return?
The announcements establish these chains’ 2026 terms, but do not confirm that the offers will return in 2027 or that every local theater participated. Check a chain’s current promotion page before making plans for a future National Popcorn Day. If you are considering a reusable bucket for a future bring-your-own-container promotion, make sure it is suitable for food contact; do not put popcorn directly into the five-gallon Lowe’s bucket Cinemark mentioned, which required its supplied liner.
