The company’s September 17, 2024 announcement put the contract’s maximum potential value at $4.82 billion—not a guaranteed payment or confirmed revenue amount.
What the $4.82 billion contract covers
Intuitive Machines described the award as a firm-fixed-price, multiple-award indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity (IDIQ) task-order contract in Subcategory 2.2, Geostationary Orbit to Cislunar Relay Services. Its purpose is to provide communications and navigation services for missions in near space, including the area from Earth to beyond the Moon. Intuitive Machines’ award announcement describes a broader effort than lunar navigation alone: it includes relay satellites, communications, and data transmission.
Planned support for Artemis
The company said it would deploy lunar relay satellites and provide services intended to support NASA’s Artemis campaign. It described planned constellation capabilities such as data transmission, high-resolution video, navigation assistance for landing-site selection and resource prospecting, and autonomous operations. These are company-stated intended capabilities; the announcement does not establish that every capability is already operational.
Is the $4.82 billion guaranteed?
No. Intuitive Machines called $4.82 billion the contract’s maximum potential value. The award is a multiple-award IDIQ task-order contract, meaning the ceiling is not evidence that the full amount has been funded, obligated, or paid to the company. The announcement does not provide a complete ledger of task orders or amounts actually obligated, so the headline figure should not be read as Intuitive Machines’ expected revenue.

CEO Steve Altemus called the contract “an inflection point in Intuitive Machines’ leadership in space communications and navigation.” That is the company’s characterization of the award, rather than an independent assessment of its market position.
