The 2026 Ford Mustang is the current Mustang documented in the available sources; the Challenger in the direct comparison is a 2023 model. That makes this less a choice between two equivalent new cars and more a decision between a new Mustang and a used Challenger. Compare the specific cars you can actually buy—especially their price, equipment, condition, and running costs—before deciding.
1. Decide whether you need a new car
Ford publishes information for the 2026 Mustang, while the direct comparison from Cars.com uses a 2023 Dodge Challenger. The sources here do not establish whether Dodge has a newer Challenger available. Verify local availability rather than assuming a new Challenger is an equivalent alternative.
A new Mustang and a used Challenger also differ in model year, warranty context, mileage, and likely condition. Those differences can matter as much as the nameplate when you compare total ownership cost.
2. Compare real prices, not starting MSRPs
Cars.com lists starting MSRPs of $32,995 for its selected 2026 Mustang and $32,800 for its selected 2023 Challenger. These comparison-page figures are not equivalent used-car transaction prices, and they may not reflect current incentives or local dealer pricing. Treat them as reference points, not a direct measure of what either car will cost you.

3. Match engine to engine
Ford lists two 2026 Mustang engine choices in the cited specifications:
- 2.3L EcoBoost: 315 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque.
- 5.0L GT: 480 hp and 415 lb-ft, or 486 hp and 418 lb-ft with active exhaust.
Ford specifies 93-octane fuel for these output ratings. A Mustang’s engine choice can change both purchase price and fuel costs, so compare the configuration you want with the actual Challenger trim you are considering. Avoid comparing a base-engine car with a high-performance version and treating the result as a model-wide conclusion.

4. Choose the transmission you will use
Ford lists a six-speed manual with rev matching as standard on the 2026 Mustang GT, with a 10-speed automatic available. Transmission availability varies by configuration; check the specific car’s equipment rather than assuming every Mustang has the same setup.

Your preference affects the driving experience, and the transmission can also affect price and fuel use. The sources do not provide a like-for-like transmission comparison against a particular Challenger.
5. Check fuel economy for the exact configurations
Cars.com reports 26 mpg combined for its selected 2026 Mustang and 23 mpg for its selected 2023 Challenger. These are comparison-page figures, not ratings that apply to every engine and transmission. EPA fuel economy depends on the specific configuration, so check the window sticker or EPA information for each car you are considering before estimating fuel costs.

- Die-cast metal body with plastic parts
- Opening doors and engine compartment
- Adjustable seat back on some models
- Full function steering with Four wheel spring suspension
- Detailed chassis with separate exhaust system
iSeeCars identifies the Mustang as more fuel-efficient in its comparison but reports greater highway range for the Challenger in its selected setup. Range and fuel economy are not interchangeable: the tank and configuration matter too. Use the actual cars’ specifications to estimate how often you will refuel and what your driving pattern may cost.
6. Test the rear seat with your passengers
iSeeCars reports more interior volume for the Challenger, while its model-level comparison gives the Mustang more front legroom. Those summaries do not establish comfort for a particular passenger or trip. If you expect adults or children to ride in the back regularly, bring them to the test drive and check entry, seating position, and space in the exact body style and year.
7. Try your regular cargo in the trunk
iSeeCars reports more cargo space for the Challenger. A published volume figure cannot tell you whether a stroller, suitcase, sports equipment, or other awkward item will fit through the opening. Bring the items you routinely carry and check both trunk capacity and access before choosing.

8. Check safety information by model year
Do not carry an old crash-test result forward to a newer car. The IIHS report available here covers 2016 vehicles and describes different small-overlap results for the cars tested then; it does not establish how a 2026 Mustang or a specific later Challenger performs. Check current NHTSA and IIHS records for the exact model year and equipment you are considering.
Cars.com lists a 5/5 NHTSA rating for both vehicles in its comparison, but these are secondary comparison-page results. Confirm the exact year and configuration in official records before relying on them.
9. Get insurance quotes for the actual car
Request quotes using the vehicle identification number (VIN), your location, driver details, and intended coverage. A model name alone cannot predict your premium.

In a 2016 report citing Highway Loss Data Institute data, IIHS said sports cars as a group had high collision damage losses. That historical group-level finding is not a current premium estimate for either model and does not establish that one is always more expensive to insure.

The condition of a particular used car can outweigh broad model comparisons. Before buying, review its service and accident records and have an independent mechanic inspect it. Pay particular attention to:
- Signs of crash damage, poor repairs, or inconsistent vehicle-history records.
- Modifications and whether their parts and installation are documented.
- Tire wear, brake condition, and other signs of deferred maintenance.
- Service records, open concerns identified during the inspection, and any remaining warranty.
Comparison pages do not inspect individual listings or establish a vehicle’s reliability. Make the decision from the specific car’s records and inspection, not an unsupported brand-level assumption.
What the current Mustang specifications add
Ford’s 2026 materials also describe equipment changes by trim. The Ford Connectivity Package is standard across the lineup, Ford app remote start is standard on EcoBoost Premium, and selected display and security equipment vary by trim. Consult the 2026 Mustang Order Guide and the listing’s build information to verify the equipment on a specific car; Ford notes that equipment can change.

How to make the decision
- Lean toward the Mustang if you want a new car and its engine, transmission, and equipment suit your budget and driving needs.
- Consider the Challenger if a specific used example offers the passenger or cargo room you need and its price, history, inspection, and condition make sense.
- Pause before choosing either if you have not compared insurance quotes, checked the exact cars’ fuel-economy and safety information, or tested your passengers and cargo in person.
