The answer depends on which country, model year, trim, mileage and condition you are comparing—and on actual local prices. In the U.S., Mazda’s vehicle page showed Mazda3 starting prices of $24,170 for the sedan and $25,690 for the hatchback when accessed October 4, 2026, but did not list the Mazda6. The Mazda6 prices available from Mazda were for the 2021 model year, so they cannot establish a current $15,000 gap.
Does the Mazda6 cost $15,000 more than the Mazda3?
Not as a general rule. A $15,000 difference can only be assessed between specific cars with comparable market, model year, condition, mileage, trim and equipment. The available U.S. figures mix a current Mazda3 vehicle-page listing with historical 2021 launch prices for both models; subtracting them would not produce a meaningful current premium.
Mazda USA’s vehicle listing showed starting prices of $24,170 for the Mazda3 sedan and $25,690 for the hatchback on October 4, 2026. These are page-listed starting prices, not dealer quotes or prices for every trim. The page did not show the Mazda6. Mazda USA’s vehicle listings can change, so verify the current page and your local dealer’s offer before making a decision.
Mazda’s 2020 launch announcements put the 2021 Mazda6 range at $24,325 for Sport through $35,750 for Signature, and the 2021 Mazda3 range began at $20,500, with the listed 2.5 Turbo hatchback reaching $33,750. Those were historical U.S. manufacturer’s suggested retail prices, not current used-car values or transaction prices. Mazda stated that its MSRPs excluded destination and handling, taxes, title and fees, and that actual dealer prices could vary. The following is a comparison of Mazda’s 2021 U.S. model-year information, not a comparison of equivalent trims or current vehicles for sale.

The Mazda3 figures and configurations come from Mazda’s 2021 Mazda3 announcement and its 2021 Mazda3 2.5 Turbo pricing announcement. Mazda’s 2021 Mazda6 announcement gives the Mazda6 engine and equipment details. These figures describe the named 2021 U.S. configurations; they do not establish today’s prices, fuel economy, reliability, insurance costs or ownership costs.

When the Mazda6 may justify a higher price
The clearest supported distinction is vehicle format: the Mazda6 is a midsize sedan, while the Mazda3 is a compact sedan or hatchback. If you want the midsize-sedan format, the Mazda6 may suit your needs better. Whether it is worth paying more depends on the actual car and your priorities—not on the model name alone.
For a 2021 comparison, the Mazda3 2.5 Turbo offers a different power and drivetrain combination from the cited Mazda6: standard AWD and output that varies with fuel grade, versus the Mazda6’s naturally aspirated 187-hp engine and FWD. That may matter if those features are important to you, but it does not make either car the better value by itself.

Do not assume the larger car will meet your passenger or cargo needs without checking the exact vehicles. Comparable interior and cargo measurements are not established by the figures above. Inspect the specific cars and verify the space, features and condition that matter to you.
How to decide whether a specific $15,000 premium is worth paying
- Match the comparison. Compare cars from the same market and model year, with similar mileage and condition. Identify the exact trim, body style and drivetrain for each.
- Use actual local prices. Compare current asking prices or written dealer quotes, not an old MSRP against a current listing. Account for destination charges, taxes, title, fees and any included equipment when comparing the amount you would pay.
- List the differences you would use. Decide whether you specifically want the Mazda6’s midsize-sedan format or a particular Mazda3 body style, engine or drivetrain. Check the equipment on each listing rather than assuming it comes with every trim.
- Compare total ownership costs using evidence for those cars. Get relevant insurance quotes and inspect service, condition and vehicle-history records. The available Mazda figures do not establish comparative fuel economy, repairs, reliability, depreciation, resale value or insurance cost, so do not treat any of those as a proven advantage for either model.
- Set a personal ceiling for the difference. After accounting for price and the features you value, decide how much extra the Mazda6’s specific advantages are worth to you. If those advantages do not justify the gap in your budget, choose the Mazda3 or keep looking for a better-matched Mazda6 listing.
What the available prices can—and cannot—tell you
The historical 2021 launch MSRPs show that Mazda3 and Mazda6 price ranges overlapped: a well-equipped Mazda3 could have a higher launch MSRP than an entry Mazda6, while the top listed Mazda6 Signature MSRP exceeded the listed Mazda3 Turbo Premium Plus hatchback MSRP. This is not a like-for-like trim comparison and does not predict used-market prices. It does show why “Mazda6 costs $15,000 more” cannot be assumed from the model hierarchy.

For a purchase decision, the useful number is the difference between the two specific cars you can buy, with comparable condition and costs included. The $15,000 claim is meaningful only if it describes those actual listings.
